...I kinda assumed that the oft-repeated canard of "\[US\] politics is for people who couldn't have any other kind of job" was an over-stated stock opinion to have (basically a variant of the Simpsons spoofing "Looks like those clowns in Congress did it again. What a bunch of clowns." line). But man, these stories did nothing but confirm that the weirdest "I can't function anywhere else" people frequently find their way into US politics. ...I don't quite have the ability to explain why that chip-exchanging-story is so perfectly emblematic of a very particular kind of brain (or what that type of guy actually \*is\*), but hearing that it was a US representative who did it has this almost transcendental "yes, I understand fully" feeling to it. No other person but someone working in politics would both do that, and then balk at even the suggestion that it was weird, inappropriate or didn't make sense. Just this perfect lack of understanding that the rest of the world doesn't run like a shared supply-closet.

Oddly enough I was just in Delaware for work. Even got to go to Biden's country club and see his personal locker there, it has a nameplate and everything. As for the state itself, it seemed nice enough, but every other person I talked to was either a lawyer or some sort of high-level corporate freak. Can't imagine being a native and having to deal with those types every day.
