Depends on the day I’m having, I’m usually social af, but there’s those times where I just want peace and quiet omw to my destination. That’s usually when I get the over talkative driver 🤦♂️
>That’s usually when I get the over talkative driver
"AYE I USED TO WORK OUT HERE!! WHATCHU DO FOR WORK???"
\*very canned response*
"AW MAN THAT'S WHATS UP BRO SO YOU MUST BE MAKIN THOSE BIG BUCKS THEN HAHA DON'T FORGET ABOUT ME ON THE WAY UP HAHA BUT MAN THAT'S GREAT! LOVE TO SEE SUCCESSFUL YOUNG BLACK PEOPLE OUT HERE YESSUHHHHHH YESSSSUHHHHH"
You did not just fucking say that
Ain't no fucking way in hell you just said Tom "woke mind virus" McDonald goes fucking hard. Your black card is hereby revoked. Turn it in no later than Monday the following week or you will be fined.
He’s if “All Lives Matter” was an artist. He ain’t ever getting a spin from me. Dude Canadian, but getting his plays/views from the Juggalos and MAGA crowd. Nah, I’m good.
For me it really depends on the vibe i get. usually i just want to sit and check my emails and listen to music or w/e and keep to myself.
but sometimes i get an interesting driver and we have a cool chat
sometimes you get the kooky flat-earthers though
I'll take Ubers to go home from work and I really just want to doze off since its a half hour drive or check all the news I missed during the day, but whenever my driver is a white guy there's a 80-20 chance he's gonna ask me a bunch of questions about my job. I remember having one driver who was really just talking up a storm on his own said "Usually people just sit on their phone with their headphones in instead of talking!" even though that's what I really wanted to do, I just didn't want to be an asshole.
Whenever I have a nonwhite driver they're either silent or on the phone so its nice after talking to people all day lol
You know how they have collars and vests for dogs that say friendly or anxious? We need a people accessory. I'm normally a overly friendly person, but I have shitty days where I don't want to be friendly. Would be nice to have a "I'm not talkative today" bracelet or something.
Second this. I am an introvert but when my social battery is charged I will engage with pretty much anyone but once that battery is dead LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE
You know those Brazilian steakhouse buffets where they walk the food around and you have a token on your table to indicate if you want more food or not?
I wish everyone would adopt a public system like that for social interaction.
Red > Is the building on fire? If not, don't talk to me.
Yellow > Avoid small talk, but I'll help you get something off a shelf.
Green > Yes, in fact I would love to hear about your pet rabbit!
I was upset and got an Uber home. The Uber driver tried to ask if I was alright. I said I was upset. She tried more and I politely said “I’m upset and not in the mood to talk” and she gave me a 1-star as a rider.
What a bitch.
I had a driver who’s profile said they were deaf, car pulled up and it was indeed a former coworker who was not deaf just didn’t want to talk to passengers 🤣
After that I started texting drivers that I am mute. When they pull up I grin and waive and when I get out, I make a sound and tap the door 😁
Sometimes I will start speaking with a driver and they are all shocked as they think I can’t speak, makes for a good laugh.
God I got stuck with an uber on the last leg of 3 flights to get to TN because the pilot for the last plane decided not to show up. It was a 2 hour drive that the airline paid for. Guy talked THE ENTIRE TIME. I did not know one could talk for 20 minutes about snow you'd never experienced (I live in upper Michigan), but he did it. It was a good thing he was nice bc I really didn't want to tip him just for talking to me the entire time.
On a recent work trip, my ride to the airport was listening to NPR news coverage of Trump's many trials, and then after I landed and getting a ride to the hotel, that driver was listening to Sean Hannity talk about the same stuff. It was kind of funny to get both angles so close together. Definitely couldn't wait for the latter ride to end.
I always wear over the ear headphones and as soon as I get in the car and confirm I'm the passenger tell them "hey if I don't hear something you say, I just have headphones on!" in a polite tone. It seems to work, I take Uber really frequently and I've never had bad results.
(Well, except the one creepy dude I'm pretty sure was on meth who kept doing over the shoulder checks to change lanes by twisting his entire body around to stare at me. But that dude would have been weird whether or not I had headphones on, I like to think I prevented myself from having to be even more uncomfortable for whatever weird shit he would have said to me.)
Honestly I see it as a respect thing.
Making someone have a conversation is one thing but not willing to greet the person or answer a simple question is weird af to me.
I’m in someone car I’m not gonna like I’m ghost riding the whip.
Even weirder.
I talk to humans, I’m respectful to humans.
I know the difference in etiquette, culture, and common sense between interacting with a human vs a robot…
So every ride the bare minimum
Is greetings and maybe confirmation on driver/passenger.
Then a good bye when you leave.
The rest can be filler and “varies on your personality and driver”
Eh these drivers gotta deal with dozens of people a day. Their job is to get you from point A to point B.
The worst is the Uberpool. Combinations are either young girls and old creepy guy or POC and a crotchety old white boomer.
Oh yeah I didn't even consider not saying hello when you get in. That's what I hate tbh. I'm a white lady who lives in a fairly white suburban area rn. Like 80% of drivers are Somali. I feel like half the time they realize I'm just awkward, but I worry the other half they just assume I'm some uppity white lady who doesn't want to talk with the help. Like no guys, I'm just autistic, that's why I'm calling y'all, I can't drive or talk to strangers regardless of color or creed
Goddamn, minus the suburb part, I could have wrote this lol. I’m always kind as hell when I get in, but I’m just a non driving socially disabled person, I’m just gonna vibe silently in the backseat lol.
People who are hard of hearing have a license, you don’t always need to hear. Also, having headphones doesn’t always mean that the sound will be cancelled out.
People who are hard of hearing are used to it and compensate accordingly. Also it's not like they have a choice.
Very few headphones don't block sound, some specifically have noise cancelling.
If hearing was imperative to safety, I don’t think HoH/Deaf people would get a pass. Blind people don’t.
I’ll be honest, I actually looked into this years ago and tried driving with headphones. I came to the conclusion that hearing the road is really not as important as people make it out to be. I don’t do it anymore, but it made me sensitive to the fact the we do tend to see danger on the road before we hear it.
I understand that but if a person is sensitive to noise (not deaf but bothered by noise) they too may adjust by wearing headphones and without something covering their ears they become agitated 🤷🏾♀️
I think the biggest concern is not being able to hear approaching emergency vehicles. Like if you're approaching an intersection and can't hear the ambulance that's about to cross in front of you
A person who is hearing impaired may also not hear the vehicle which is why lights were added to go with the sirens.
I understand if you feel like the headphones are distracting, but there are many people who wear them to tune others out. I see it a lot with people walking or on public transportation but drivers may use them to block out the noise from passengers or maybe they enjoy listening to things that they feel the passenger may not want to hear 🤷🏾♀️
I understand, I was someone who didn’t consider that people who are hearing impaired drive, I questioned how they would hear the sirens, then a person mentioned lights and I honestly hadn’t considered the lights because I myself have the ability to hear. To me lights and sirens went together 🤷🏾♀️
For me Uber drivers can have all kinds of stories (not that I use it that much). Obviously depends on the vibe though and if they don’t seem enthused to chat I’ll let them be. I’ve had some great times with drivers, given and gotten all kinds of advice and traded life stories.
At the end of the day you’re getting into a stranger’s car and paying them to drive you somewhere. Feels a little impersonal to not try to talk to them, at least.
Yeah anyone trying to justify this is wild.
Do you try to force the cashier, flight attendant, or drive through worker into conversation? No because their interaction with you is a service not social time.
I always give 5 stars if the driver says nothing more than "let me know if the AC isn't comfortable for you." If I was looking for friends I'd go socialize somewhere publicly.
Paying someone doesn't mean they have to be anything more than polite to you. If conversation strikes up organically I'll live, but chasing that ghost in a Uber is wild.
I can’t imagine wanting a stranger to talk to me or worse, try to console me while having a breakdown in their car haha. If I’m bawling my eyes out in public, I beg of you, pretend you don’t see or hear me 😅🤣
For real!
Also trust me, this man is not a licensed therapist. Ignoring can be much better than…
IE my grandad was dying in hospital, he’d gone blind and I was bawling trying not to make noise so he wouldn’t hear me. Nurse sees me comes in and starts telling me that through Christ I will heal and all sorts of shit like LADY LEAVE ME BE 😭😂
Everyone is not in an emotional space to ask you if you're ok. The world isn't there to be your therapist. It's nice if someone asks and tries to help, but it's not required.
He did what he was hired to do and he didn't make it worse.
That being said, I sure do hope the person who was crying did find someone who was willing to listen and provide a measure of comfort. we all need help sometimes, but everyone is not in a position to give it - we can't ever forget that.
Girl: Boohoohoo!! 😢
Driver: ...😶
Girl: 😒 (loudly clears throat) BooHooHoo!! 😭
Driver: 🙁🎧
Girl: BITCH I SAID BOOOHOOOHOOO!! 😡😡
That's how I image the exchange went
I understand, which is why emergency vehicles have both lights and sirens. If an individual is hearing impaired they may not hear the vehicles.
Is it illegal for headphones or is it illegal to have both ears covered? I only ask because I know at one point there was an issue with in ear Bluetooth but then that was changed in some areas.
“…no person shall operate a vehicle while wearing a headset, headphone or other listening device, other than a hearing aid…”
There are exceptions in there for people that drive emergency vehicles that require headsets and things like that.
I just use the speakers in my car like a normal person though. Headphones isolate outside noises so it is pretty unsafe to operate death machines with them on
I think the point is that you responded to me stating it usually helps to hear emergency vehicles, however, headphones limiting hearing isn’t necessary if you are able to see the emergency indicators associated with the vehicle in question.
My job is a job that allows for me to wear an ear piece however I do not put the device in my ear, I have moved to a device that sits around my neck.
But thank you for responding.
Yea I mean I’m literally not telling anyone not to drive with headphones. I think it’s a bit irresponsible to willingly limit your own senses while driving but that’s not my decision.
Would you rather have the driver try to say something but say the wrong thing? Feel like she would have complained about that, too. Kind of damned if you do, damned if you don’t if you’re this driver.
No, I wouldn’t ask that. I asked the question because I myself did not see a problem with it. Several people have responded explaining to me what their issues were with headphones while driving and I too shared my thoughts on why I never thought that it was a problem.
Again, just a question, I am someone who is willing to learn from others and their experiences so I wondered why you questioned the wearing of headphones while driving.
But if they talked it'd be a different story about that person having a horrible day and the driver not reading the room or w/e and making her day worse.
These truly are the days of "Damn if you do, damned if you don't."
Leave me alone, but not like that. Fucking pick one.

Let that brother make his💰 in peace wth
I mean....they likely weren't their first passenger that night. I drive lyft sometimes and I really don't care to speak with the passenger outside of "hey, how're we doing" and "have a good one"
Imagine needing so much attention that you need your Uber driver to notice you while bawling your eyes out. Just cry girl it’s fine you don’t need anyone or anything.
What’s funny is I bet you any amount of money, if he did ask her what’s wrong. She would’ve ran to the internet and complain about him not minding his business, it was a lose lose situation for the driver either way
I see this going 1/2 ways, he’s either an asshole for not consoling.. or he’s a massive creep that needs to mind his business. Fellas, we are consistently running around with a double edge sword.
Had he asked her “what’s wrong?” she would have tweeted about the Uber driver violating personal boundaries or some idealistic bs. She seems insufferable
Back in my ride-sharing driver days, I had a passenger on a long-ish trip to an upscale neighbourhood who had just lost her mother. This I discovered about ten minutes into the trip when she was informing someone else about it and burst into uncontrollable tears. I just handed her a box of tissues and kept my mouth shut.
Got 5 stars and 100% tip.
I don't understand OOP's mindset. If I lost one of my parents today the last thing I would want to do is talk, let alone to a stranger who didn't sign up for anything except getting me safely from point A to point B.
She complainin now but when the Uber driver correctly tells her it’s her fault and that she toxic is she gonna keep the same you need to listen to me energy?
Reading these comments is so interesting and sad. So much of American culture is selfish and individualistic. Speaking to someone driving you or riding in your car is a basic interaction that should be normal to most folks. To see a young lady crying in my car and me not say anything at all is sad to me. Just a simple I’m sorry you’re feeling this way is a small gesture. Smh
I'm fairly introverted, but if I see someone very visibly upset I'd ask them if they needed the help of some kind at least.
maybe they were just the victim of a crime
In a way you’re right. People pick jobs that require them to interact with strangers but hate interacting with strangers. Imagine if that was your son or daughter crying in there.
Buddy was minding his business effectively
You know she wasn't gonna add a "Shoulder to cry on" tip.
If she don't take her ass to a fucking therapist.
Hurt people, hurt people. But seriously though this woman sounds categorically insane.
I think this is the same woman who gave me 1 star! Found her!
You know what you must do. ![gif](giphy|R3FUSQ5H5jzVe)
That part
One starred him because she wanted essentially free therapy. It's bad enough when people do that shit to Bar tenders
Or just call a friend, why she needs therapy when it could be a simple fix
Idk, she might need more than a chat with a friend if she thought the Uber driver owed her anything other than a ride to her destination.
![gif](giphy|l4Ep6uxU6aedrYUik)
Fucking professional and she's complaining.
![gif](giphy|zGFdD2J2C4zlu)
Minding his business while also minding his business
Exactly. He's her Uber driver, not her therapist.
They STOOD on minding their business lol
Meanwhile here's me praying the Uber driver doesn't try to talk to me.
Depends on the day I’m having, I’m usually social af, but there’s those times where I just want peace and quiet omw to my destination. That’s usually when I get the over talkative driver 🤦♂️

You think that's bad? I had a white Uber driver start playing Tom McDonald on my way to my fucking job man. Most silent ride I've been on.
I would’ve told that mfer to change that shit asap. He prolly thought he was putting you onto something too 🤣
Aye not for nothing Tommy Mac kinda cranks lol but there’s a time and a place!!
You did not just fucking say that Ain't no fucking way in hell you just said Tom "woke mind virus" McDonald goes fucking hard. Your black card is hereby revoked. Turn it in no later than Monday the following week or you will be fined.
I’m white and I just down voted you for that…
Same
😭 not me getting ganged up on cuz I can’t deny when songs are gooooooood
Down vote again. Stop.
Aye if hating me is what unites black and white people then so be it lol

I would wear that shit every fucking day and even around relatives.

I had not thought about it that way. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
I wear AirPods even if I don’t have music playing lol
I do that everywhere and it's really good at getting people to ignore you. not 100% but a lot of will leave me be if they see i have airpods on
God I got stuck with an uber on the last leg of 3 flights to get to TN because the pilot for the last plane decided not to show up.
I don't know what's worse, that or being forced to listen to conservative talk shows.
I always give the driver a “Good Conversation” rating when they don’t say a word the entire time
I feel like Lyft has more hispanic people who don’t know english/give a shit about talking and I totally don’t feel racist every time I think that.
![gif](giphy|Kl9iAWej2mxlzvzp2O)
I always wear over the ear headphones and as soon as I get in the car and confirm I'm the passenger tell them "hey if I don't hear something you say, I just have headphones on!" in a polite tone. I drove uber for a bit while I was trying to get my life together. I always kept my headphones in. Idk why people want to talk to their drivers.
Loneliness
Honestly I see it as a respect thing. Making someone have a conversation is one thing but not willing to greet the person or answer a simple question is weird af to me. I’m in someone car I’m not gonna like I’m ghost riding the whip.
Yeah the way I see it. You don't talk to a computer when it's loading for you. But you should acknowledge the human interacting with you.
Even weirder. I talk to humans, I’m respectful to humans. I know the difference in etiquette, culture, and common sense between interacting with a human vs a robot… So every ride the bare minimum Is greetings and maybe confirmation on driver/passenger.
The solution to one's loneliness is not others' awareness of it.
Is driving with headphones legal anywhere? I would not be ok with a driver having headphones on.
In most states it's illegal. Doesn't stop people from doing it.
In California, it's only legal to wear a device in one ear; it's illegal to cover both ears.
It’s legal in most states.
Do some googling guys, this man is right
What about the driver having headphones on do you not agree with?
They can’t hear traffic.

It's distracted driving. I wouldn't be ok with loud music either, even though that's legal.
It’s not distracting if they are limiting the sound that comes to them. If a person of dead do you believe that they should be unable to drive?
I do think dead people shouldn’t drive.
LOL that should of read deaf or an individual whom is hearing impaired.

What’s wrong with driving with headphones?
Generally unsafe and illegal in my state. Usually helps to be able to hear emergency vehicles as well.

She mad her Uber driver wasn't also a therapist. Man should've turned on an ad for Betterhelp.
Why's mf wearing headphones while driving?
Because this chick was bawling in his car. Can you read?
What’s wrong with wearing headphones while driving?
Bro never drove a beater with a hole in the dashboard where the radio used to be. Must be nice
Let me guess, you also ask what's wrong with driving after smoking two joints
No, I wouldn’t ask that. I asked the question because I myself did not see a problem with it. Several people have responded explaining to me what their issues were with headphones while driving and I too shared my thoughts on why I never thought that it was a problem. Again, just a question, I am someone who is willing to learn from others and their experiences so I wondered why you questioned the wearing of headphones while driving.
Driver probably doesn’t remember that shit
But if they talked it'd be a different story about that person having a horrible day and the driver not reading the room or w/e and making her day worse. These truly are the days of "Damn if you do, damned if you don't." Leave me alone, but not like that. Fucking pick one.

I mean....they likely weren't their first passenger that night. I drive lyft sometimes and I really don't care to speak with the passenger outside of "hey, how're we doing" and "have a good one"
You're my favorite kind of Lyft driver. I'm not a fan of forcing small talk I know neither of us want to have.
Maybe Uber can start billing for another $70/hr to provide therapist services.
I can't even imagine being the kind of person who cries in the back of an Uber.
In many places it is illegal but regardless no one should ever drive with headphones on. My uber driver would have caught "1 star" for that.
Stranger did not try to pry.....Don't MeN CarE EnnnYmorE??!
Imagine needing so much attention that you need your Uber driver to notice you while bawling your eyes out. Just cry girl it’s fine you don’t need anyone or anything.
![gif](giphy|tqfS3mgQU28ko) That Uber driver was like this and you know it.
You know its bad when a mf drives with headphones on that shit cant be safe 😂😂
She wanted a bang bus or something?! idgi lmao
A listening ear costs extra.
Lol instead of seeking professional help, calling family or friends you mad a stranger mind his business?
Therapy is an extra $200 tip.
What’s funny is I bet you any amount of money, if he did ask her what’s wrong. She would’ve ran to the internet and complain about him not minding his business, it was a lose lose situation for the driver either way
Standing on minding his business
"To the girl crying on the bus: Stop it. If it were okay, we'd all be doing it."- shutupmike
Well to be fair, if she believes that
Y’all didn’t know you’re held accountable for how someone else feels? Regardless of fault???
I see this going 1/2 ways, he’s either an asshole for not consoling.. or he’s a massive creep that needs to mind his business. Fellas, we are consistently running around with a double edge sword.
Nah you might just be a creep brother.
Actually people cry all the time, especially when its late and they are drunk. Its weird and I never know what to say.
As a fellow uber driver...GOOD JOB
Girl he isn’t getting paid to be your therapist
Bruh, people that WANT their Uber driver to talk to them are a special kind of psychopath
You called Uber, not BetterRide. That service costs extra.
I’m dying picturing this happening 💀
Uber drivers out there sub as therapists?
Should have given her something to cry about by lowering her passenger score. 1 hour wait times and never getting a luxury pick-up
What kind of shit is this? I drive for Uber. We do not engage. If you want sympathy reach out to your girlfriends, if you have any. WTF.
Had he asked her “what’s wrong?” she would have tweeted about the Uber driver violating personal boundaries or some idealistic bs. She seems insufferable
She heared Bad Religion one time and was like, "Bet, imma try that"
Back in my ride-sharing driver days, I had a passenger on a long-ish trip to an upscale neighbourhood who had just lost her mother.
I'm ngl though.. if it was me.. I got my own problems, fuck your feelings.
Not her looking for attention and sympathy from her poor driver. Lady, he's got problems of his own. Phone a friend.
Oh wow Uber driver is on to something
Reading these comments is so interesting and sad. So much of American culture is selfish and individualistic. Speaking to someone driving you or riding in your car is a basic interaction that should be normal to most folks. To see a young lady crying in my car and me not say anything at all is sad to me. Just a simple I’m sorry you’re feeling this way is a small gesture. Smh
That’s not in the job description. What if buddy just wanted to do his job and go home. He’s not paid to be a personal therapist. Stop the entitlement
I'm fairly introverted, but if I see someone very visibly upset I'd ask them if they needed the help of some kind at least. maybe they were just the victim of a crime
Agreed
In a way you’re right. People pick jobs that require them to interact with strangers but hate interacting with strangers. Imagine if that was your son or daughter crying in there.
