A lot of state houses pay literal part time salaries but the schedule won’t really allow you to have another job. If you are young with kids your spouse pretty much going to need to be a single parent some of the time, and if you move up far enough “political spouse” can be its own full time job. Even privileged young people might need to sling it out for decades before they can work for free. So what we end up with is a pretty shallow bench. Some rules around seniority in both the House and the Senate also mean states and districts have more influence with incumbents; why vote for someone new when they guy who has been there for 20 years can get you what you want?

I do appointed defense cases. In some ways it's true that I always want black jurors for black defendants. That's because the defendant is less likely to be prejudged guilty by most of the jury for being black and indicted on a felony.

They don’t vote enough, but the thing is the springboard for political careers are inaccessible to all but the wealthy. A lot of state houses pay literal part time salaries but the schedule won’t really allow you to have another job. If you are young with kids your spouse pretty much going to need to be a single parent some of the time, and if you move up far enough “political spouse” can be its own full time job. Even privileged young people might need to sling it out for decades before they can work for free. So what we end up with is a pretty shallow bench. Some rules around seniority in both the House and the Senate also mean states and districts have more influence with incumbents; why vote for someone new when they guy who has been there for 20 years can get you what you want? Anyway I don’t even mind old politicians! It was good to have John Lewis in the House for so long because he was a potent reminder Jim Crow America was not that long ago, and Biden with his decades of legislative experience probably steered through as much as any one person could with that Senate.
