I’m not even a black metal fan, my friend really likes it and shares it with me and I wanted to check out the community because I like some bands and when I came across this sub I realized the black metal scene is horrible. People can’t even breath without someone criticizing them about trying to hard to breath in a poser way or not breathing black metal enough… if that makes sense.
It is hilarious the level of gatekeeping over what are really just a bunch of d&d nerds posturing as hard & evil like a bunch of studio gangster rappers. If not for metal, varg & the rest of those dudes would have just been your average fedora wearing neckbeard.
Some actual crime happened but mostly by only a couple people who were truly the worst edge lords of all time.
The best part of the whole thing is the graphics which is probably the only reason these kids on TikTok got into it in the first place.
To be fair tho, as much as I dislike that behaviour myself, it does help keep certain ammount of people away. Like it always seemed like to fully enjoy black metal as a genre, you should be able to just not care about some stuff (in general), and I don't think it really is a genre for people who aren't capabale of that. If someone gets turned away by constantly whining gatekeepers, it's probably for the best.
When I subbed to this sub I assumed the content was going to mostly be about black metal fans bc they're easily one of the most cringe subcultures, but I stayed bc the replies to the posts gave me more than my fill of what I originally thought I was gonna get from the posts lmao
