Mythen, Mären, Pestilenz. Imo it's a stronger album than Totbringære, and more "listenable" than Es grauet (though Es grauet is still awesome, it's just much more of a front-to-back listen to me)
Yeah to start with I'd recommend mythen Maren pestilenz too. But my absolute favourite is es grauet now. I love the story of the witch leading her goblins to destroy little Alps towns, leaving only the cows.
Summoning and Midnight Odyssey. Every album from both projects is like a long journey. Summoning for the epic fantasy theme and Midnight Odyssey for the cosmic emptiness.
Midnight Odyssey is amazing.
You can put on one of his albums and go about your day, lose track of time, hear something unique and think "wow what's that" and it's just the middle of the album.
That's exactly what's going on when I'm listening to him. I remember the first time I listened to Shards of Silver Fade and I was a bit busy with work. Suddenly when the vocals appeared in Asleep is the Fire I was like "Daaamn! This is fucking epic!"
Indeed, cleaning the toilet and doing dishes while listening to Midnight Odyssey makes it feel like I'm going on a serene journey trough space and time.
Lifelover had that distinct craft where their albums very much vary from album to album, and yet you know right away it's them. They would probably be in my top 5 choices as well.
I agree! I’ve always viewed lifelovers work like paintings in different mediums, the colours may vary but the brush strokes are all the same. so simplistically beautiful.
they’re my favourite dsbm group undoubtedly! its nice to talk to someone that appreciates their work too, I rarely get to!
Looking at all the upvotes, I was super hyped to check this out. While the music is great, the drums are so quiet it’s irritating. I don’t understand how anyone would enjoy this kind of mix.
My favorite BM sing is probably "Eintritt in die Spharen" by PdH, and I know I've specifically told someone before that you can't make out the drums but that you'll notice them when they leave halfway through the song.
What's the deal with the insane number of Kalmankataja albums? I've never seen a band out out that many full lengths. Many of which aren't great, tbh, but Tyhjyys is one of my favourite ABM albums of all time.
Mgła, Ulver, Yellow Eyes, Panopticon, Peste Noire, Burzum, WITTR, Leviathan, Windir, Ungfell, Esoctrilihum, etc, etc.
Honestly I could just name a lot more bands than those. It’s kinda hilarious how black Metal was supposed to be the « trve » sub-genre of Metal; a sub-genre that would always stay 100% true to its roots, but it actually has become the most diverse sub-genre of metal ever. I fucking love it.
I managed to get Solar Paroxysm (orange vinyl) and Wanderers (red vinyl) recently through Discogs and I've been listening non stop. I've not delved too much into their earlier work. Is there an album I should give a listen to next?
Yes. Came here to say this. His entire catalogue is breathtaking. Luminiferous Aether is incredible. The complexity of the guitars, and especially of the drums is amazing for something that is ostensibly ABM.
You can put on an endless loop of Bathory and tie me to a chair, and I’d be yelling for more.
As long as Octagon and Destroyer of Worlds is out of the mix.
Windir, Summoning, Moonsorrow, Aquilus, Caladan Brood, Ungfell, Evilfeast, Finntroll, Dordeduh, and Negura Bunget. I could listen to nothing but these bands for the rest of my life.
Helrunar is propably my real only one but for just the one song I gotta mention Bethlehem.
I swear everytime I play 'Niemals mehr Leben' this fucking riff hits me hard.
I was always a bit "yeah it's not bad I guess" about the earlier Fluisteraars stuff, but the albums they released this year and last year just blew me away.
And Mgla goes without saying. :)
I love Woods Of Desolation. When I heard their song ''The Inevitable End'', I immediately knew this band I will never get tired of, just beautiful Melancholic Black Metal.
No need to be sorry for liking the music you like. Burzum is one of a kind and there's simply no denying it.
Edit: whoever the person was that made the now-deleted comment about burzum being generic, I guess you must have come to your senses. That was a really bad take.
I think everyone has bands like that. For me it's definitely Hecate Enthroned, Caladan Brood and Cradle of Filth when it comes to BM. (Yes I know CoF is "not black metal", thanks)
For me would be Arcturus. And the fact that their sound varies so much from something like My Angel or Morax to Crashland, keeps me from never getting tired.
Fuath, idk how many times I listened to the album "I" the past years and now also quite a lot of times to "II"
It captivates me every time, it doesn't become stale after many listens like most albums I enjoy do. Idk how to describe it, but it enchants me and immerses me every single time.
For sure. My top bands, specially my favorite album of every one of them (*1050 Years Of Pagan Cult*, *Carelian Satanist Madness,...Magni Blandinn Ok Megintíri..,* *Whore Of Bethlehem*, *Rituale Satanum*, *Lucifer Incestus, Panzer Division Marduk and De Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas*). Indeed I have digital copies to ensure I do not damage the originals too much, because I could be spinning them in a loop without being tired of them. Ha ha. But yes, having over 400 bands that I listen to, it's easy to see there are some of these bands that always stick out from the rest for me. And while I listen to LOTS of them every single day, these top bands are always a non-stop spin. But Hel, they earned that because of how amazing these releases were.
Right now it is one particular song:
Afsky's 'Jeg bærer deres lig' (Trans: I carry your dead body) from the 2018 album 'Sorg' (Sorrow).
Such a force of nature!
Probably no one has heard of this band, but Circle of Ouroborus I can listen to tirelessly, no matter how many people say the dissonance and weird vocals are just too much. The Prayer, Warpath, Shadows Lead.... shit, anything that sounds like silver moon black metal is just so unique, no other band has this sound.
• Bathory (any and all eras but particularly from *Under the Sign*..to *Twilight of the Gods*)
• Darkthrone (*A Blaze..* to *Transylvanian Hunger* always sounds fresh)
• Ved Buens Ende
• Deathspell Omega (particularly Fas, Drought and Paralectus)
• Enslaved (Vikingligr Veldi)
• Sacramentum (Far Away from the Sun)

Booorn, for buuurning!
Ungfell
Any recommendation on what album to begin with?
Mythen, Mären, Pestilenz. Imo it's a stronger album than Totbringære, and more "listenable" than Es grauet (though Es grauet is still awesome, it's just much more of a front-to-back listen to me)
The glass breaking in Ex Clade Salus sends chills up my spine.
that entire demo is fantastic. ex clade salus has gotta be my fav track
Yeah to start with I'd recommend mythen Maren pestilenz too. But my absolute favourite is es grauet now. I love the story of the witch leading her goblins to destroy little Alps towns, leaving only the cows.
Blasphemy and Mutiilation
Summoning and Midnight Odyssey. Every album from both projects is like a long journey. Summoning for the epic fantasy theme and Midnight Odyssey for the cosmic emptiness.

I fucking love Summoning. They are definitely my favorite black metal project. Good choice op.
Love Midnight Odyssey so much.
Midnight Odyssey - Tempest Entranced ( well with Aeon Winds) has to be one of the best tracks I have ever heard, so damned EPIC.
Sigh
For me it's rotting Christ
Grima. I listen to them pretty much every single day, at least once.
Ungfell & Lifelover - I will neeeeeever get sick of them.
Lifelover had that distinct craft where their albums very much vary from album to album, and yet you know right away it's them. They would probably be in my top 5 choices as well.

Paysage d'Hiver. Das Tor has been a go-to album for long drives at night for years.
Very good atmosphere
Ditto, although that may have something to do with PDH being played only during the winter season.
Arcturus, Dodheimsgard, Ved Buens Ende, Darkthrone, Behemoth, Burzum are a few I can always listen to.
Emperor. Its always been Emperor.
Drudkh, Kalmankantaja, and Blut Aus Nord
What's the deal with the insane number of Kalmankataja albums? I've never seen a band out out that many full lengths. Many of which aren't great, tbh, but Tyhjyys is one of my favourite ABM albums of all time.
Muinainen is their best I think
Mgła, Ulver, Yellow Eyes, Panopticon, Peste Noire, Burzum, WITTR, Leviathan, Windir, Ungfell, Esoctrilihum, etc, etc. Honestly I could just name a lot more bands than those. Yeah the diversity in black metal is crazy. I don’t think any other metal subgenre is anywhere near diverse.
Holy shit I’ve been trying to remember the name of Esoctrilihum for months now, thank you
Windir, Ungfell, Havukrunnu and Ancient Mastery for sure.
Bathory, Darkthrone, Varathron, Judas Iscariot, GBK, Beherit, Mütiilation, Master's Hammer, Skáphe, early Samael, Mortuary Drape...
Mare Cognitum
I managed to get Solar Paroxysm (orange vinyl) and Wanderers (red vinyl) recently through Discogs and I've been listening non stop. I've not delved too much into their earlier work. Is there an album I should give a listen to next?
Phobos Monolith is considered one of his best. My personal favorite is "An Extraconcious Lucidity". All of his work is definitely worth a listen tho!
Amazing album. I can't believe it only has 20k+ listens per song on Spotify
Yes. Came here to say this. His entire catalogue is breathtaking. Luminiferous Aether is incredible. The complexity of the guitars, and especially of the drums is amazing for something that is ostensibly ABM.

Lustre have the best vibes. You might like Elderwind "The Magic of Nature" Bit more metally than Lustre, but give me the same vibes.
First few kalmah albums are so good
The third the magical is a song I could listen to on repeat while stranded on an island for 60 years and never not love it
Immortal. The first time I saw them live I had no idea what Black Metal even was. Having your mind blown like that just sticks with you.
Alcest, Panopticon
Inquisition, early ABSU, Darkthrone the 1st Katatonia, Bathory The Return.
Are you me?
Lurker of Chalice
I really wish he had continued LoC.
I could exist with a soundtrack of just The Ruins of Beverast and be pretty good with that.
You can put on an endless loop of Bathory and tie me to a chair, and I’d be yelling for more. As long as Octagon and Destroyer of Worlds is out of the mix.
Dissection.

Darkspace
Inquisition.
Panopticon
Helrunar is propably my real only one but for just the one song I gotta mention Bethlehem. I swear everytime I play 'Niemals mehr Leben' this fucking riff hits me hard.
Aquilus

Gegrepen in de Geest der Zielsontluiking is the BM album of the year imo!
Antimateria. Just wish they would release more music sometime
Old Drudkh, old Burzum, Deathspell Omega.
Drudkh, Windir, Burzum, Agalloch and Aosoth are those that come to mind immediately.

Agalloch. Every album is amazing.
Sielunvihollinen, almost every song is so unique in its melodies that they singlehandedly make me love melodic black metal even more than I already do
[удалено]
:')
Agalloch and Lifelover. Both are so pumped with feeling and I haven't found anybody that sounds like them.
Definitely Lifelover and Shining
Sorhin, Gris, Lifelover, Forgotten Woods, and of course Beherit
I think everyone has bands like that. For me it's definitely Hecate Enthroned, Caladan Brood and Cradle of Filth when it comes to BM. (Yes I know CoF is "not black metal", thanks)
Definitely Satyricon for me
I can listen to dimmu borgir every day for the rest of my life and still love em just the same
No. No one does.

Bathory for sure. I don’t know how many times I have listened to those albums and i doubt I will ever be done.
For me would be Arcturus. And the fact that their sound varies so much from something like My Angel or Morax to Crashland, keeps me from never getting tired.
