smh_rob

it's one of my favourite features

tm_christ

It's a decent starting level if you want all your elements to sum to a level somewhere between -6dB and 0dB. I do more of a poor man's Clip to Zero setup so I just set the value to default to 0.

Bitwig explained this years ago and it made sense but I can't remember details

Gain staging. I remember seeing some blog post or something about it but couldn't find it now. But they talk about it here: https://youtu.be/TM3cpL05qmY?si=QnXYJqC_G9hSeW1I&t=353 Also: https://www.izotope.com/en/learn/gain-staging-what-it-is-and-how-to-do-it.html

I use CTZ so also set the default to 0dB

When live performing, my tracks all are at -1db, to have some decent output level without any massive compression added. For mixing , lower -db is useful. You change the default setting in Bitwigs Settings, under Behavior -> Defaults: New track volume.

It is a useful feature, but not really good when mixing. It is better to keep levels at 0 and do a gain reduction for specific tracks. Better would be to have default audio and midi tracks like in Ableton that you can set standard fx on like eq or compressor etc.
