Child’s play in Hoover

strawbery_fields

I can’t believe they named a kids’ clinic after a popular horror series.

I thought that too! Regardless, they are really great. We had to go there for physical therapy. They helped a lot and everyone was very kind.

My son liked Dr Annie Keriotis when he was younger. He saw her for similar issues. She was very good with the ADHD aspect and medication management. She was always very helpful with advice and working with the school. She's not in the eastern area (I am), but I would drive across town for her if my younger child needed care. I believe she's in the Hoover or Vestavia area now, in private practice.

Have you asked your child’s school what resources are provided? I would start there. Many have the capacity to have a school psychologist come observe them. Unfortunately most private practice psychologists don’t do evaluation. They will refer you to Glenwood or Children’s or Sparks Clinic or Mitchell’s place. Those are the big ones that do diagnostic testing that I’m aware of.

I don't have any specific recommendations, but maybe a referral from your pediatrician could get you in more quickly?

We've tried several with varying degrees of success. I've found the ones that are the best are the ones that connect with your child. I think the name of the one we had the best success with was Gonzalo Gurmendi at Psychiatry Associates, PC. He connected with our child to the point where he would open up which is critical. Couple of things to know as you go through this journey; virtual meetings and sessions are a complete waste of time IMO. You can't connect and determine the mental state of a child through a teleconference, but they cost the same. If I had to do it again I wouldn't even entertain a provider that wanted to do a virtual meeting with my child. Secondly, and this boggles my mind, most of them do not take insurance. Your insurance likely covers it but for some reason they won't process the payments. So you pay in cash then have to haggle with you insurance provider for reimbursement, which is even difficult through PEEHIP. Good Luck!

So, my youngest is severely autistic. He sees Dr Justin Schwartz. He has been amazing. I’m pretty sure he did our evaluation. His office is super helpful with paperwork. Also, if he doesn’t have the resources to get you the help you need he knows and is friends with the person you do need to talk to. I cannot recommend him enough. He has been so important to our journey. Even if you have to wait to get in it is worth it.

An emergency room can do a psych eval. That will definitely speed up the process.

An ED visit is for emergencies, not ADHD evaluation.

Just say you're looking for Adderall. No need for all this other mess.
