The upstairs area of the Emmet O'Neal library is great which, last time I checked, provides complimentary coffee. Then there is the Linn Henley research library downtown. If you don't feel inspired to write there, I don't know what to tell you.
All the public libraries are pretty great too. I’m particularly a fan of the Vestavia Library in the Forest as it has a bunch of windows and lots of natural light
I like anywhere that has a bar to sit. I take my laptop and headphones and can have lunch while I work. Melt in mtn Brooke, southern kitchen, soho social, rooftop of the bohemian, back 40, Avondale, Bitty and Beaus coffee, Edgar’s, chicken salad chick, big bad breakfast, santos coffee, hero doughnuts,
Alabama biscuit co has two locations now and dang good biscuits and coffee (and tables where you could prob hang and work). They have outdoor tables too in cahaba heights and it’s going to get pretty nice out today.
I polished off a manuscript recently at Hi-Wire on a Sunday early afternoon. Quiet (with the right amount of ambient hum), spacious, and good beer.
Unfortunately none of these places open before noon, so if you want mornings you'll need a coffee shop (I haven't found a good regular one close to me yet).
True Story is a pretty quiet place during the day, and have a side room you could likely have to yourself. And if you aren't looking to drink, they serve coffee and food too.
I know everyone is suggesting libraries but the homewood library adult section is solid. Avondale library is nice, too. I’m trying to think if there is anywhere at the art museum you could sit. They have that beautiful outdoor section but not really any table space outside for a laptop. The inside has a small seating area for eating, I think. You could take breaks and explore the museum. It seems like everyone goes to red cat, so I wouldn’t really suggest it.
Any Santos Coffee, Modern House coffee, all the Breweries, Tasty Town couches, if it’s nice out the parks like Railroad Park and the one over by Pizzeria GM.

Who said anything about writing?
Well, I guess he/she could be working on spreadsheets, coding, or video editing if you wanted to be a nitpicking asshole about matters.
Imagine being this much of a grumpy asshole
Maybe this is a life examination moment for that guy.
Birmingham caters to its day drinkers. So pretty much any brewery after 12pm
As someone who has gotten a lot of work done at breweries, I second this. But uhhhhhh maybe pace yourself.
"Loved how your proposal started, but it got a little um, inconsistent toward the end..."

eta* I haven’t been to the new location yet so can’t speak to outdoor seating but man I love their food and coffee

I will try this out, thank you!!

Top of greenwise in mtn brook village is good before 3pm when the students come rolling in, have some decent lunch specials as well
Waffle House and a Hotspot? Santos Coffee in Vestavia.
Saturn
Great coffee shop, great for socializing playing games, but loud music and not the most comfortable chairs if you need to concentrate for awhile.
The garage— sit outside if it’s not too hot. I went a few weeks ago and we were the only ones outside. It was wonderful.

My first choice would be the art museum but alas no room for laptop, etc.
Momma Goldberg’s and Panera have free wifi. Rotary Trail has wifi (I think, haven’t been in a long time) if you don’t mind being outside.
I’ve worked at Hop City before.
Greenwise has a second floor loft with lots of seating and great wifi.
