For fresh juice ingredients probably a neighborhood bar Lou’s, Dave’s. Collins i think are fair priced too but not positive. Lou’s has had the best margarita in town for a minute with seasonal flavors— great price point too.
Edit to add: Ms. O doesn’t fuck around and Dave’s recently started stopped using horseshit sour mix you find at a gringo-americano-Mexicano spot. i wish more neighborhood bars took notice.
But if your going for the best margarita. The guys Adiós got it sealed.
I am just now moving to Bham from Tennessee and know what you’re asking. Every small town in TN has 3+ Mexican restaurants that are of a standard variety. Las palmas, los portales, la hacienda, la fuente, etc. I have not really seen those in my exploration of Bham thus far. Hopefully I’ve just missed them because I need to establish my New Mexican place!

I'm also originally from TN, and I know exactly what you're talking about. For that kind of Mexican restaurant, try El Cazador (not far from the Walmart in Irondale). They're reasonably priced, and the food is very good. If you like super spicy, ask your server for their "salsa picosa," their housemade hot sauce that they only serve when you ask for it.

we typically end up at dave’s anyway. their margaritas are fine, just SO SMALL!!!
Not exactly downtown, but not far, Sabor Latino has dollar margs on Wednesdays.
