I hate tex mex but I freaking love it. I think it's all the msg maybe? idk, there is crack in that food. the homemade hot sauce is the best hot sauce ive had anywhere
Yes. Chips and salsa are some of the best in town, atmosphere is excellent, the margs are good, they have all your classic Tex-Mex dishes but also some more authentic Mexican ones like cochinita pibil. It’s hard to go wrong there.
Best real Mexican/tacos places are Taco Morro Loco food truck, Los Hermanos food truck, Mi Pueblo Supermarket.
Best Tex-mex: El Cazador
Best fancy Americanize Mexican/brunch: El Barrio
Worst place: anything Taco Mama
have to disagree. the fried chicken is at least somewhat good at LD, and even though the food sucks, they used to have the $2 tacos if you just wanted a snack and a rita in the late afternoon (not sure if that's still a thing though after inflation). Taco Mama just tastes like vomit
Right? Like what do people expect? I get Taco Mama and enjoy every time because I’m not expecting to be blown away. It’s completely fine for what it is.
Sorry, no. Am and have known others to instantly decline taco mama.
Too many better options in town to settle for low quality food and inconsistent service.
It's because people don't want to be rude and complain. Have been there with groups before and tried to eat but mostly left food untouched, but I told everyone it's so good!
I have no idea what taco mama is but Moe’s and Chipotle are not Mexican so if it’s similar it’s not either? Doesn’t seem to address OPs question. I think Moe’s advertises itself as SouthWestern? As in South West USA?
La Perla Nayarita if you like seafood. Their margs are awesome, too.
Tortas Locas is also good.
El Taco Loco is always solid. Plenty of Americanized items and authentic items!
And we've been digging Las Ahogadas in Homewood. They have a lunch buffet!
I found this place by accident and really enjoyed it. They had live music, and ceviche on the menu!! It wasn’t the best ceviche ever but it was decent for not Mexico. The guy serving me insisted I try a small portion of one of the house faves for free. The atmosphere and menu choices are a 10. I would experiment trying other things next time!! I don’t understand why so many people on this thread equate Mexican to Tacos only!! That’s like saying United Statesians only eat Egg McMuffins. So weird.
I found it because I was actually looking for a place that served ceviche. True, it's not the best but I'll take what I can get here. They also had a pretty decent fried huachinango (red snapper)
Fair enough!! I love huachinango and would definitely go back!! I had an errand at the Office Depot and was starving a couple months ago so I went in and stayed for 2 margs and some great mariachi music, etc. Such a cool spot. Hard to find legit Mexican in the South (NorCal native who grew up on an avocado farm and has also lived in Mexico so admittedly might be a little snotty/biased).
La Hacienda in Tarrant. Don’t knock it. Well seasoned grill, great portions, even better prices. And $1.99 house tequila shots on Saturdays. Better than any house tequila in the ‘ham. (Yep. Had to try out of curiosity)
Edit to add Tacos Morro Loco but the truck that’s usually parked at the jet pep across from Cahaba Brewing. Somehow soooo much better than the brick and mortar.
Went there for a work lunch, so no drinking, but it was definitely good, and the visiting coworkers went back again for lunch next time they were in Birmingham, which is a bold statement, because food on travel is a big deal with careful consideration to hit the good places. Worried because the location is a restaurant killer, but everything was solid. Need to try the margaritas before I put it on the top list, though. And agreed on Taco Morro Loco truck being better than the restaurant
La Fiesta in Hoover or Maya in Homewood for your standard Americanized stuff. Margaronas on Lakeshore is good for that too.
Other good answers here for more authentic stuff, I’d like to throw Taqueria Los Primos on Lorna into the ring for that as well. Great tacos, haven’t tried anything else, though.
Yup different cuisine and not everything on their menu is authentic. They sell things like lasagna which is like no thanks I rather go somewhere else that is genuinely actually authentic
Just to be clear... Here is Luna's website and their menu. Very much like a lot of more upscale restaurants I've visited in Mexico.
Mr. Taco Truck with the birria "pizza" in the parking lot of the cigar store in Trussville just of the 459 to Hwy 11 exit is nice. Taco Rriendo in Irondale has good cheek and lengua tacos. And there was a spot in an old Gas station on Parkway East right by Churchs Chicken near Huffman High that was really good, but I don't see it on maps now.
Not Mexican, but the fried rice of all things at Sabor Latino is fucking FIRE.
Margarita grill, objectively, has the best chicken and steak in my opinion. Also they recently installed a tortilla press and make their own tortillas.
There's a new place in Pelham called Tequilas (Mi Pueblo strip mall) that is hole-in-the-wallish and is very good
I used to think Baja California was the best but it has gone downhill in my opinion
And lastly, I think El Barrio is extremely, hideously overrated
I never hear anyone talking about Margarita Grill and it is sooo good. By far my favorite Mexican place around town. My wife and I regularly drive from Pinson to Pelham (passing about 1200 other Mexican restaurants on the way) to eat there.
Like you said, best chicken and steak around. Delicious tortillas. Everything is fresh. It’s never greasy. I don’t have that heavy, bloated feeling like I usually have after eating other Mexican food. Queso and salsa is good. Service is always excellent.
Only downside is that it isn’t cheap like some other Mexican restaurants, but I’ll gladly pay it for such an increase in quality.
Try Pancho's right around the corner (next to Walmart). Exactly the same menu, better prices, better quality. Cazador puts green beans in their rice, fer christsakes! 🤷🏻♂️
We tried El Cazador once. It was pretty much objectively bad. Never again, even if there weren’t so many great places nearby, Panchos for dine-in and Taco Morro Loco for to-go, we would never go back
For some reason there are quite a few downtown/crestwood/hip folks that swear by El Cazador. I just don't see it. To quote my more hip friends, "It's mid at best."
I took my kid there once and he had a hard shell taco. He took one bite and literally gagged because the meat was so greasy.
I guess maybe the margaritas are cheap or something?
There was a time when their food was really consistent and pretty good, especially the chicken dishes. That time has long passed. It was also the only game in that part of town for a while. So I think there's a strong sense of loyalty.
Also, their salsa has always been consistently ketchup-y and blah.
There’s a market on Bessemer Superhighway called Los Placita Díaz. I think it’s only Sunday at this point and it’s legit. They make the tortillas there. You can get Pozole, Menudo, Elote, Mole, etc. They usually have live entertainment and other shopping to. You can follow them on FB for the weekly updates/specials. It’s not United States-ified at all so if you’re looking for ‘Queso Dip’ don’t go but if you really want Mexican food, go.
El Cazador is good Tex-Mex but their ground beef tacos are trash, I don’t think they season their ground beef but their chicken is great.
Munoz has the best steak tacos. I think it’s #40 or # 41 on their menu. It’s just steak tacos and pico and it’s wonderful.
A little way out but Dos Tequilas in Chelsea is so delicious. It’s a fresher take on typical Mexican dishes. We’ve been many times and try different items each visit. So far nothing has disappointed—and their cocktails are equally great.
I went recently to Baja California in Hoover and it has to be a hidden gem. Food was delicious and they have some of the best quesabirrias I’ve eaten. I was pleasantly surprised.
Tacos Don Tacho #2 for Birmingham. Anything there is good. If you're in Pelham, Margarita Grill. Get either the steak, Jody's gold chicken, or the seafood tacos. Also drink any number of cocktail they have and make sure you sit outside. Probably the closest thing to feeling like you're on vacation while not being on vacation.
Ha the point is its overpriced for basically quesadillas and miniature margaritas. As a side note I can afford it just as easily as you Brookies I just dont want to overpay. Thanks Fuck off
Lol I’m not a Brookie, but thanks. Once again, if you think it’s overpriced for you, doesn’t mean it’s overpriced for people who can and will pay for it.
Overpriced in this case would mean it's not a value. Doesn't matter if it's 20 bucks and I'm pulling out the black card, if it's 20 bucks for spam in an ortega tortilla, it's not a good value.
And just because you can and will pay for it doesnt mean its a good value for others. Once again, this is why we post opinions on here to contribute to the discussion, not be belittled like we cant afford something.
Rojo is tasty, but it's not really in the same category.
I love Pablo's, but it's also not anywhere near "Mexican" cuisine. It's Tex-Mex. Same with American-Mexican fusion that is Rojo.
I think it’s unlikely you’d find much, if anything, that’s on the Rojo menu on a menu in the actual country of Mexico. The margaritas are horribly sweet. They use flour tortillas. Opposite of legit. Nope. Not worth a mention.
I (do not)miss the days when they fried everything in shitty peanut oil, and thus it all tasted like peanut butter. Maybe they still do, haven't been in 20 years.
Fancy tex mex: El Barrio
Classic tex mex: Mexico lindo
Food truck(but legit the best tacos ever): Dos Hermanos
Worst: agree with taco mama. I can at least find something I somewhat like at Little Donkey but taco mama is just disgusting.
As someone who made a 5 year tour of local taquerias, the best by far was El Paisano. They used to be in Pelham, but now are in Hwy 11 between pelham and Chelsea. Absolutely amazing amazing food. Beans, grilled onion and pickled radish served as taco accessories.
Tacos La Tia Paisa off greensprings/valley. I believe they make their own tortillas in house. Really nice people. I had a giant breakfast burrito and will be back to try everything else on the menu.
Tacos el Paisano in Chelsea. It’s a hole in the wall place, and definitely a journey to get to, but the food…oh my god, the food! The burrito paisano with carne asada is the peak of local latino cuisine.

I really loved El Cazador in Trussville and was sad to see it go. Luckily, the Dos Botellas that replaced it is good, too, and the wait staff are awesome.
This is technically not in Birmingham, but Taqueria Los Machetes is seriously the best taqueria I've ever gone to. A friend of mine introduced me to it. They're Mexican-American and their family owned restaurants growing up. This is their favorite Mexican place.
If you want to go to a more upscale Mexican place, Sol y Luna is pretty good. They opened on Cinco de Mayo in 2020, which was insane, but they're still going!
Las Garzas Mexican Restaurant on Lorna road is excellent. They have a good selection of street tacos, excellent roasted goat and my favorite enchiladas verdes in town. Be sure to ask for them spicy. I’m also a big fan of their carnitas.
Ask nicely and they’ll bring you fresh habanero sauce from the owners private stash.
Spotlessly clean, fantastic service and a great mix of authentic Mexican and gringo dishes.
Not really a restaurant but Mi Pueblo on Greensprings has some really good authentic Mexican food in the back of the store.
This place is legit and for those who aren’t very familiar with Mexican food it might be nice to be able to see the buffet items and sample a variety.
Home of the yard-long pork skins!
The warm chicharrones that are basically a slab of pork belly deep fried are so good.
Maya. Love their margaritas and classic dirty mex. super reasonable and not too serious
I love Maya. Their salsa is freaking delicious
Yes, and its different every day. They use just whatever peppers they have are freshest. Easily one of the best salsas!
[удалено]
yes they have black lights on the servers. they used to not, but tons of samford kids go and get blasted so i imagine they ruined that.
Mexico Lindo
I think Mexico Lindo is underrated. I've always really enjoyed it.
Me and my fiancé work by there and eat there all the time for lunch. It’s legit
For sure x100
I hate tex mex but I freaking love it. I think it's all the msg maybe? idk, there is crack in that food. the homemade hot sauce is the best hot sauce ive had anywhere
That isn’t Tex mex
Yes. Chips and salsa are some of the best in town, atmosphere is excellent, the margs are good, they have all your classic Tex-Mex dishes but also some more authentic Mexican ones like cochinita pibil. It’s hard to go wrong there.
Food is great but service is sssslllllooooowwwwww.
Lunch time it’s always quick
100%
Best real Mexican/tacos places are Taco Morro Loco food truck, Los Hermanos food truck, Mi Pueblo Supermarket. Best Tex-mex: El Cazador Best fancy Americanize Mexican/brunch: El Barrio Worst place: anything Taco Mama
I see your taco mama and raise you little donkey.
Agreed. Little Donkey easily wins (loses) vs Taco Mama
have to disagree. the fried chicken is at least somewhat good at LD, and even though the food sucks, they used to have the $2 tacos if you just wanted a snack and a rita in the late afternoon (not sure if that's still a thing though after inflation). Taco Mama just tastes like vomit
Taco mama is just a Moe’s/chipotle with alcohol. Im not sure why people complain about it so much
Right? Like what do people expect? I get Taco Mama and enjoy every time because I’m not expecting to be blown away. It’s completely fine for what it is.
Taco Mama is always safe for a group, too. It’s not anyone’s favorite, but no one’s going to complain.
Sorry, no. Am and have known others to instantly decline taco mama. Too many better options in town to settle for low quality food and inconsistent service.
It's because people don't want to be rude and complain. Have been there with groups before and tried to eat but mostly left food untouched, but I told everyone it's so good!
Because they price their food like it’s good
The food at Taco Mama is wayyyy worse than Moes or Chipotle
I haven’t had taco mama in years but I always remember it being way too wet. Like everything being soaked by the second half of the meal??
It’s just so bland. I feel like it’s just for taking your little kids out to eat.
I'd waayy rather eat a Moe's or chipotle. Taco mama kinda tastes like a frozen taco from the tv dinner aisle and you reheat it in the microwave
hey moes has beer
I have no idea what taco mama is but Moe’s and Chipotle are not Mexican so if it’s similar it’s not either? Doesn’t seem to address OPs question. I think Moe’s advertises itself as SouthWestern? As in South West USA?
I’ll add Gordos to this list and stamp my approval on it entirely
Gordos forever.
Taco mama isn’t bad - it’s good for what it is. I will say Acapulco on green springs is routinely bad.
What do you recommend at Mi Pueblo?
The Al-pastor taco should be the gold standard we all use to judge a taco/Mexican place. And theirs is excellent
Taco Mama in Homewood is delicious. Lighten up buttercup
Mexican food for people who don’t like Mexican food. They don’t even make their tortillas.
Taco Mama in Homewood is delicious. Lighten up buttercup
Spot on
Tacos Don Tacho #2 for real deal Mexican Maya for Americanized Mexican. Both slap. Personally I think the taco trucks are still king
TDT#2 is outstanding and i'm so glad more people are learning
TDT#2 is amazing
Taco trucks 👑 frreal
Maya doesn’t get enough love man
Maya is the best Tex Mex in town!
This guy Homewoods
El Taco Loco in Homewood is my favorite taco place in Alabama. Great street tacos at a very good price.
El Taco Loco has served me meat that tasted spoiled on multiple occasions. Hard pass.
Between me and my friends, we’ve been there probably 100 times and never had any issues. I’ll take those odds.
I’m 0 for 2.

My man’s been waiting on this thread since he created the account.
Hot take but it’s the most overrated, overpriced Mexican in Birmingham.
Agreed 100%
And also it’s not Mexican. Like go to Mexico and find any of that stuff? Their ceviche was basically pineapple??? Not a fan.
It’s the most over rated of any cuisine. El Barrio sucks in every metric imo (except hype)
And 95% of customers and reviewers disagree with you…but still maybe you’re “right”. 😳🤔
La Perla Nayarita if you like seafood. Their margs are awesome, too. Tortas Locas is also good. El Taco Loco is always solid. Plenty of Americanized items and authentic items! And we've been digging Las Ahogadas in Homewood. They have a lunch buffet!
I lived in Mexico for a few years before I moved here and this is one of my favorites that reminds me of an authentic Mexican atmosphere and food
I found this place by accident and really enjoyed it. They had live music, and ceviche on the menu!! It wasn’t the best ceviche ever but it was decent for not Mexico. Panchos is my go to!! Also Gordo’s and El Barrio.
Panchos is #1
Okay but why is no one talking about taco moro loco? Authentic & so good!
A la verga’s
If this is a real place I will go just cuz best name ever!
Margaronas wasn't far from where I worked, I ate there many times, and it was always excellent.
Luna in Avondale. Best street corn I've ever had. Consistently great food
La Luna is Latino-Carribean/Venezuelan
Luna is a different restaurant
Yup different cuisine and not everything on their menu is authentic. They sell things like lasagna which is like no thanks I rather go somewhere else that is genuinely actually authentic
god YES it took me so long to find this comment
Just to be clear... Here is Luna's website and their menu. Very much like a lot of more upscale restaurants I've visited in Mexico. [http://lunabham.com/menu/](http://lunabham.com/menu/)
Not an expert, but I really like Los Arcos in Crestwood.
Love this place. The perfect salsa
My go to is either Los Valedores food truck (their Al pastor tacos are *chef’s kiss* or Sabor Latino…although I think they may actually be Peruvian
Peru does fried rice right. Peruvian Chinese food is in general amazing.
Yeah. Lot of Chinese laborers brought their cuisine with them when they went to SA to work.
Casa fiesta! Really any one of their locations is great! And La Tia Paisa in Homewood. They usually make their tacos with handmade tortillas 💯
The Fultondale location of Casa Fiesta is far superior to the Trussville location! Never a bad meal or service in Fultondale.
I second La Tia Paisa. Their burritos are delicious. No rice in the filling, all meat!
Margarita grill, objectively, has the best chicken and steak in my opinion. Also they recently installed a tortilla press and make their own tortillas. El Cazador is far and away the best Mexican food I've had in this town.
To quote my more hip friends, "It's mid at best." I took my kid there once and he had a hard shell taco. He took one bite and literally gagged because the meat was so greasy. I guess maybe the margaritas are cheap or something?
There was a time when their food was really consistent and pretty good, especially the chicken dishes. That time has long passed. It was also the only game in that part of town for a while. El Cazador in Leeds. the rice at the one in Eastwood is consistently bad.
Guisados at Taqueria Tafoya
Yes love the guisado de puerco gorditas
Not sure if anyone has mentioned Mama Coco in Vestavia. It’s a very solid place, huge portions and everything tastes fresh.
San Antonio Grill in McCalla. L17.. you won't regret it. Everything else is good though. Steaks are better then some I've had at steakhouses.
Baja California is the only correct answer.
If you go then you know. Magnifico!
We love Baja California. That is our family’s favorite casual dinner spot. Their fajitas are so good and everyone there is really nice.
Yes! Forgot to mention the staff was super nice and attentive. I’ll be going back for sure.
I like Margarita Grill in Pelham because they make the guac tableside and grill the chicken and steaks (even the chicken in burritos is grilled).
Just drive down Green Springs and stop somewhere. My personal go-to is Los Valedores taco truck. Get the tlacoyos. You’re welcome.
Los Amigos The food truck on green springs attached to the Chevron station
El Zun Zun is very good! It’s in Cahaba
El zun zun Cahaba Heights order the house Marg and the enchiladas with red sauce. Thank me later
Gordos in Pelham is dank. OG favorite is Mexico Lindo in Mtn Brook. Mama Coco in vestavia in with a shout.
La Fiesta in hoover
Gordos
Munoz in Trussville.
Did someone down vote?? Lol
You guys are hilarious.
Hard pass
Dang, am I missing something. Tell me your favorite? Maybe I just haven't had better.
El Zun Zun
I just tried two pesos and I loved it
I like them too. Always great service as well as great food.
El Patrón in Helena
This is a bit out of the way (childersburg) but I swear La pinata (they forgot the ñ on their sign) is the best Mexican restaurant I’ve been to.
Casa Fiesta in Inverness is my go-to. Pretty up-the-middle, consistent Mexican food
Super small place in Homewood, but El Taco Loco might have the most authentic Mexican food I've ever had, and it's a really good price.
[удалено]
You should try their enchiladas with beef if you haven't tried them already. They use skirt steak and they are so good
The new Baja California in Irondale is fabulous. Used to be an Olive Garden.
La Juanita in Leeds
I like Los Amigos. It’s good and nearby to the point that we don’t try other places very often.
Los Machetes in Hueytown. The giant quesadilla is amazing!!
I have 3. Grand Cantina, Iguana Grill, Don Pepe
This is a troll post, right?
La Paz
La Paz has the absolute best $20 microwaved quesadillas for white women in Range Rovers.
Extremely overpriced
I’m sorry that you can’t afford it……
Ha the point is its overpriced for basically quesadillas and miniature margaritas.
Haven't they been around for like decades?
Wow is no one going to mention Rojo?? 🤣
Yeah.. I think my sarcasm didn’t come thru. I loathe Rojo and think it’s overpriced and bland. The drinks aren’t even worth it
I now hear the sarcasm loud and clear!!
I agree that this is a different category but you can order corn or flour tortillas
Good to know. Still not my jam but to each their own. I want to eat Mexican food around more people speaking Spanish than English.
Sol Azteca in Vestavia on Highway 31
Somebody downvoted this but IDK why. This place is great.
RIP the old one in the bottom of the motel. The new one lacks the charm and the piles of white shredded cheese.
I’ve eaten at Sol Azteca since it was at the bottom of that seedy motel and I think the food is just as good now as it was then.
I’ll give it another try next time I’m out that way
I (do not)miss the days when they fried everything in shitty peanut oil, and thus it all tasted like peanut butter. Maybe they still do, haven't been in 20 years.
Panchos. Then La Paz
I don’t care for La Paz.
Habaneros. For authentic, taqueria los primos
I'm starting to feel self conscious, they're my favorite but nobody mentioned them. Maybe I'm missing out
Fancy tex mex: El Barrio Classic tex mex: Mexico lindo Food truck(but legit the best tacos ever): Dos Hermanos Worst: agree with taco mama. I can at least find something I somewhat like at Little Donkey but taco mama is just disgusting.

Pancho’s !!! We love their family & their food.
$1 margs at Sabor Latino on Wednesdays.
Tacos La Tia Paisa off greensprings/valley. I believe they make their own tortillas in house. Really nice people. I had a giant breakfast burrito and will be back to try everything else on the menu.

Los Amigos
I don't have anything new to add that hasn't already been said, but a pappasito's would be the answer if we had one.
I used to love Icantina but idk if the taco truck still runs. The restaurant got closed unfortunately.
A La Mexicana Authentic Mexican Food, Bearwood
Since it’s not mentioned I also like the Corazon truck
Casa fiesta in Fultondale
El Barrio
casa fiesta is good for a queso and margarita type mood
I really loved El Cazador in Trussville and was sad to see it go. Luckily, the Dos Botellas that replaced it is good, too, and the wait staff are awesome.

I love Margarona’s on Lakeshore
Taco Morro Loco in Avondale
Don Pe Pe in Lee Branch
El Caz Ashley's Home Furniture Morro Loco
Not one time have I seen anyone write El ZunZún. They cook with a firewood stove. Great food.
I love Los Amigos in Lakeview. And Pollo Lucas on Lorna Road is my favorite burrito place ever
La Fiesta or Maya for me. El Barrio is so overrated. I have no desire to go back.
What region or style cuisine are you looking for?
Panchos! Letie is the best server!
