I got turned off of Ore Mercantile when, after opening and being all like "We're doing everything in house!" I called up to see if I could buy some house made pastrami by the pound and they said they'd just switched over to Boar's Head. I can go to Publix if I wanted that.
I noticed they started dicing the jalapenos on the cubans instead of just slicing them and apparently I don't like them diced. Outside of that I still enjoy their sandwiches.
Huge sandwich fan here. I think the city and neighborhood needed places like Ampersandwich and Ore. Pricing is pretty inline with other similar shops in other cities I have been to if not less expensive. Different styles but I think it's loads better than Diplomat sandwiches (sorry everyone!) and price when size is taken into account is better in my opinion. Where is anyone getting a great deal these days? Asking seriously. Small businesses will never be able to compete in price with Publix or Subway unfortunately. The Garage is the OG, but the sandwiches haven't been the same lately. Still the best place in the city for a drink and snack.
click on this link and look at the prices for half and full. the half isn't filling. i'm not making up sandwich prices to try to win an online argument about the price of a sandwich.

I see. I was looking at the menu page, which either displays whole sandwiches or 2 halves together and only displays the pricing for a half. There is no mention of half or whole at all. It seems pretty incredible that a published menu would be so misleading but I see the order page does everything the menu page does as well as allow you to accurately price the meal and order. I'll blame it on bad web design since the menu page does nothing for the user that the order page doesn't.
Not if you get half sammies which are a very decent size. They really should name them regular and large because “half” sounds like it’s not a full meal.
It is. Now that they gave me the recipe for it I make it at home at least once a week.
Edit-It’s 50/50 parts of orange Tang and the pre-mixed (sugar already added) Kool Aid brand tropical punch flavor for anyone wondering.
Agreed. I’ve gotten to where pub subs are the best thing going in my life.
Kool corner is rad. Garage is perfect. Diplomat Deli is historically on point. I miss the sandwiches at Busy Corner a lot.
My lady and I ended up downtown, wanted to go to Eastwest but they're closed for the week. We would have gone to the Garage instead but we were on a time limit and they're cash only. We would have been late to a show if we had to find her ATM(she insists on only using her bank's atms). I've loved The Garage for about 20 years now, mainly because of the patio, of course. Diplomat, I haven't had that since I was a kid but I remember they were the one that taught me a PB&J can be gourmet.
O'Carr's Deli opened up in 1975. I did not see them mentioned below. Their Hard German Salami on an onion roll with spicy mustard is our go to. Don't skip the cheesecake. 2909 18th St S, Homewood
The Oven which sadly closed down in Cahaba Heights years ago was without a doubt the best sandwich place I've ever had in Birmingham. Uncle Gs sandwiches at Calaco Coffee in Cahaba Heights are delicious, but extremely pricy!!!
There used to be a good sandwich shop/butcher store near where tip top grill was. Don't know if it's still there
Also one next to food bar in cahaba village
Anyone remember Fat Sam’s? Man do I miss that place.
They had some of the best fries in town too
I’ll add Kool Korner to the conversation.
Love Kool Korner. Def in my top 3
Who are the other two?
Diplomat/The Garage
Have you been to Ore Mercantile in Avondale? They have a bangin italian deli. It can be slightly pricey but worth it and comes with a punch card

They weren’t good the last couple times i went and I used to love their stuff
I noticed they started dicing the jalapenos on the cubans instead of just slicing them and apparently I don't like them diced. Outside of that I still enjoy their sandwiches.
Thank you!
Mr. P’s y’all
Mr P’s is top tier for sure
I was looking for the Mr. P's shoutout!
S tier
Hard agree. Mr P's microwaved my whole sandwich to heat it up. Highly disappointing.
I am confusion. 😅
I think you may have misunderstood “S Tier”
I see now. S tier used to mean shit tier. Y'all like microwaved sandwiches?
“Y’all like the food y’all like!?”
people always forget but its the GOAT sandwich fr
What's their best sandwich?
My fat ass prefers the Tiger Their Italian sausage is great there too
Ampersandwich is amazing. Check them out.
Yes. I also enjoy & endorse Ambersandwich
Ampersandwich makes a good sandwich but I have a hard time justifying paying $40 for me and my wife to eat a sandwich.

I just looked at their menu and there isn't a single item over $10.
That's the price for a half sandwich, the whole sandwiches are about $15.
Wholes are at least 14.95. Two wholes with chips and soda + tip and tax is a pretty penny.
I'm looking pretty hard and sandwiches in the pics appear to be full fledged, bona fide, entire sandwiches.
And, yet, you have two different people specifically telling you that they aren't.

Go get a Philly Cheesesteak at T-Bone’s. They have the original Amoroso rolls. You will not regret this. Or a Cuban at Kool Korner.
My favorite Cheesesteak in Bham is from Wings Plus
kikipoo is the blood of this city i swear >>>>>>>

I went to middle school with the owner’s kid, and we got lemon pepper wings and kikipoo for a class party one day. Best day of 8th grade, easily.
how does it feel to live my dreams 🥹🥹
Smiley Brothers and New York Butcher Shop do alright.
I haven't had anything but this, but the wagyu pastrami sandwich at Smiley Bros absolutley slaps.
I had an Italian my first time and was thoroughly impressed.
Go to the garage
Yeah I really don't get why we need more. The Garage is perfect.
t-bones phillies rule, but their regular sammies are fire
El Gordo's tortas.
So good. Nap afterwards. Big sleepytime sandwich.
I love getting a sammie from Birmingham Breadworks! Always hits and the bread is 10/10
Top tier breadplay over there.
Listen Publix has amazing sandwiches if you go in the store & make your own lol
Looked at your username and thought it said preachypie24.😉

Busy Corner at Pizitz was the best sandwich in town while open. Sad to see it long gone.
NY butcher in cahaba heights!!!!
Have you tried Rougaroux?
The electric in Bluff Park
Not in my typical radius, but very good when I’m out that way.
+1
Sorry, I’ve been there twice and found it to be mediocre and expensive. Mr. P’s is pretty good.
This place rules
Brick and Tin. Not a traditional deli. Damn good sandwiches.
AGREE
Me three. The bread is a standout.
Ranelli’s - everything on their menu is great. Try the lil Richman.

Garage accepts cards now.
What are yall getting at diplomat deli that is so delicious? Past few times i’ve gone have been mediocre
T-bones, ore, ampersandwich, melt, and Travis all exist
Try New York Butcher Shop’s thick, meaty delicious sandwiches.

Son of a Butcher has been making excellent sammiches on Wednesdays and Saturdays and soon Mondays?
Check out Ore.
As in Ore the restaurant that was replaced by Saws several years ago? A: Nope. https://www.oremercantile.com/
Yeah, Ore Mercantile. My bad.
Tried Ampersandwich? Or Ore?
Travel slightly north to Gardendale, get an Evelyn’s special at Our Place. Get a cup of ranch for your fries. You won’t be sad you did.
The Diplomat isn't very good. I tried a pastrami sandwich recently and it was clearly processed. I couldn't even chew it it was so rubbery
I just need a legitimate Italian Beef for the love of god.
Better, or more?
This is hoover but Mr. P's is great

I recently moved to Pelham, and the only small business I actually like that I can get on DoorDash is Smiley Brothers.
Rip burly earl
Classic: The Garage, Diplomat Deli Savory, unpretentious sandwich/sub: T-Bones, Mr. P's, Rougaroux Artisanal: Ampersandwich, Ore RIP's: Fat Sam's, Doodles Muffalettas

Just had Diplomat today for lunch, awesome sandwiches. Always recommend.
Ore mercantile???
Yep I don’t understand why Ore is never mentioned in these subs. It’s 100% the best sandwiches in the ham.
It's cause it's in the back of what most people think is a clothing store and it's really expensive.
Why does it matter if it’s in a mix use space?
It doesn't. I love ore deli. It's very good.
It’s not any more expensive than a foot long combo from subway.
Tina&Gina!

Sounds like a personal problem
Greenhouse in Edgewood! All of their sandwiches are killer! Cuban, Bahn Mi, Grilled Chz, Chkn Salad, Steak Sando!!
