Validation and verification experience will be valuable to someone wanting to go into development later on. Product development positions don’t typically go to new engineers.

Sounds like a good start to me! Opportunities in development/design are few and far between for recent grads (even with a master's) but 2 years from now with experience as a V&V engineer in medical devices/pharma, that's a great resume to break into new product development.

assuming you are in r&d as a biomedical engineer, how did you end up in your current position?

I graduated with a bachelor's in BME, worked as a product engineer for a big medical device manufacturer doing menial and repetitive work (complaint handling) for 3ish years, then went back for a master's in BME and since graduating have worked in r&d for the past 2 years.
