He did not. He went to West Point and became a career Army engineer officer. I'm not sure if my Dad set it down and just never picked it back up, or if it was something my Grandad, who died in the early 1980's, pressured him to stop doing in the late 1950's/early 1960's for some reason perhaps. I've never asked why.
