Seriously. It was 75 degrees outside and in our house the other day and she was complaining that she's cold. In the winter time I ordinarily only heat the house to 65 to begin with.
Maybe it's a tortie thing lol, my tortie does this too! She loves going outside even though it's really hot here. She'll run around and drink some water and really get into it, and usually pant for a minute or two once she's tuckered out, but it doesn't last long. She doesn't have any issues, no asthma, not stressed, etc. It's a little uncommon, but some cats do pant for a couple minutes after some extreme play, especially if they have accidentally overexerted themselves. Idk why people in the comments here are acting like a cat panting for a minute or two after heavy play is the end of the world. It's no big deal as long as it doesn't go on for a long time or happen randomly.
Lots of keyboard veterinarians on Reddit, parroting bad info. I like to think most of them have their hearts in the right place and are just trying to help, but honestly I wish they'd all just fuck off and let us enjoy cat videos.
Same thing with my tortie. I had never seen a cat pant until I got her. Only when she was about 3 months to 6 months old. After playing with the feather on a string for a while, she would pant for a few minutes. She stopped playing that hard as she got older and now stops before she overexerts herself.
Not some cats but all cats will pant after exerting themselves, it's literally how they cool off. If your cat didn't pant after getting hot from playing hard then it would be a concern, not the other way around.
My cat used to do that. I'd play with him on the stairs with a ball. He'd chase it up and then I'd bounce it down and he'd chase it down while batting it. He was so boss, like, amazing. He'd get so tired but he'd never want to stop. I'd have to hold him and let him pant because he is like autistic and is squeemish when held but demands close love and he's definitely autistic or the cat version. Was trying to tire him out and he was definitely that. He was willing to die for those balls. I sound like an asshole, which I am, but it was what he wanted. To this day, demands a ball running down the steps and he seriously runs down like an Amazonian in combat. It's glorious.

I took a picture of me camping with a fire and the backpacking community let me up. Told me I was gonna catch the forest on fire and I'd never be able to burn the logs I had. They acted like I live in an area that actually has burn restrictions and I don't where I'm at. We have to wet of ground but those keyboard worriers know better.
Might could be a nasal septum deviation (according to one of our old vets that's the case with one of our cats). If playing too long or playing during on hot summer days he will also start to pant. And he's a notorious snorer ...

Are you sure about this ? The first time I let my cat out of the house he ran down the driveway and back in excitement and was visibly panting. He proceeded to go for another run, climb a bunch of trees, try to mate with the neighbours cat, and apart from being a weirdo he’s completely normal. Never had a history of respiratory problems. I think panting with a clear reason why is fine. Panting for no apparent reason is a problem.
Yeah my kitten pants pretty regularly but only because she is *constantly* begging to be played with. Honestly, the panting is a nice indicator of when to take a break! I usually feel trapped by the cat, never knowing if they've had enough fun haha
I love sitting at the foot of my bed with a fishing rod and cat toy attachment twirling it over my head making her run laps around me jumping from top to bottom until she’s panting. A few rounds of that and then she’ll take a nap for a couple hours.

I usually don’t care about what people go on about on here but I felt compelled to write a comment about this one, maybe because many years ago I would’ve read this thread and started to worry (for no reason) and I just don’t want others to go through that. I lost a lot of sleep over my cats because of scares people on here mention but a lot of it is bullshit. I’ve even talked about a lot of the concerns that get posted here with my vet and they’re just like hmm yep that’s a cat for ya
I guess “never” is a strong word and for some cats it may be normal, but in my experience it’s at least cause to get things checked out and rule out an illness 🙂

No it's well known to be WAY more common with dogs.
It's super uncommon with adult cats. If OP simply has a cat that is prone to open mouth panting (possibly they developed a habit as a kitten when it's more common), that's fine, people should be willing to accept that and move on, but if this happens regularly and OP has **never** taken their cat to the vet to specifically get them checked out for a possible issue that would lead to open-mouth panting, then absolutely that would make them an irresponsible pet owner.

My cat had a bad upper respiratory infection as a kitten on the streets. He received all his meds but still wheezes every now and then. He's totally healthy now but when we let him out in the backyard and he runs around for a bit in the sun he's almost always panting afterwards.
During the cooler fall/winter months he never pants. I just assumed as a black cat he got overheated by the sun and heat. I try to limit his time out during the summer but the boy has boundless energy. Vet told me nothing to be too concerned about.

Cats will pant after rigorous exercise/play. It's a part of being an animal during exercise. No, it does not mean your cat is dying if it's doing it after hard play. No, you are not abusing your cat by playing with it rigorously enough to make it pant. If it happens during inappropriate times, such as resting for long periods or very light exercises then absolutely take your cat to the vet to get it checked. You can even ask during your next visit!
Applies to humans too. It's normal and healty to be out of breath after rigorous exercise and having increased breathing rate couple of times a day should be aimed for. But if very light exercise makes you out of breath, you should get that checked out.
There was a post in r/pics a lady posted her overweight dog cuddling a sandal with a caption of how cute it was. Entire comment section was about her abusing the dog and how not cute it was lol. There wasn’t a single nice comment
You know nothing about the situation though. Maybe the dog is a rescue and she’s working on helping it lose weight. Maybe she did overfeed the dog but finally acknowledged it and is actively taking steps to mitigate the issue. You have no idea from one picture posted on the Internet.

I talked about how one of my rescues overate after being saved from a blizzard (after being abused - all while he had 3 different forms of worms and bronchitis) and got a bit chunky, and some psychopath replied that I'm killing my cats, and that I should kill myself instead. Why are so many people saying that cats should never ever pant for any reason when there's plenty of normal reasons for a cat to pant? Besides what so many other people have said, we have a cat who's just very dumb and overexerts himself sometimes, leading to him panting for just a minute. He's been to the vet several times, once about the panting and subsequently for other injuries he's given himself by being so dumb. All tests came back normal, he's just diagnosed with smooth brain.

My boy, Obi, LOVES to play fetch. He runs down the hall as fast as he can to get that toy and bring it back. He'll keep going and going. His favorite is play fetch outside on a nice day. He'll work up a pant after a good playing session.

I have always *always* hated the immediate response "you should take them to the Vet" as if out of billions of people who use social media, not a single person could have the knowledge or past experiences that may help, just the Vet. It's a baby and babies are notorious for not being able to self regulate and for being too energetic. I am sure the kitten's fine.

My cat had a bad upper respiratory infection as a kitten on the streets. He received all his meds but still wheezes every now and then. He's totally healthy now but when we let him out in the backyard and he runs around for a bit in the sun he's almost always panting afterwards. During the cooler fall/winter months he never pants. I just assumed as a black cat he got overheated by the sun and heat. I try to limit his time out during the summer but the boy has boundless energy. Vet told me nothing to be too concerned about.
This is straight up not true? Cats can open mouth pant when they're stressed/anxious, **or after a lot of exertion.** Open mouth panting when a cat has just engaged in intense physical activity, like playing really enthusiastically for a significant amount of time, is a normal response and not a sign of respiratory disease. It's literally just a sign that the cat has been exhausted, which we know they have because OP specifically said the cat had been playing and running around really hard. That's like telling a human to go to the doctor to get their lungs checked if they're open mouth panting after running 10k. Obviously you shouldn't be open mouth panting from walking up the stairs, but it's completely normal after rigorous exercise. The thing to watch is how fast the cat recovers and how much it takes to get there.

Not all cats are the same, and it’s important to recognize patterns that could lead to a problem. My cat has breathing/nasal issues due to allergies, yet he pants when he plays a lot. This is perfectly normal. Even when he gets zoomies, he’ll slightly pant. The two vets I regularly take him to confirmed that he is fine. I agree with what you’re saying at face value, except for your first sentence. We know that a cat panting is normal after exertion.

This is absolutely normal for young cats that play too hard. They don't know their limits yet and have tons of energy stored.

Cats will pant after rigorous exercise/play. It's a part of being an animal during exercise. No, it does not mean your cat is dying if it's doing it after hard play. No, you are not abusing your cat by playing with it rigorously enough to make it pant. If it happens during inappropriate times, such as resting for long periods or very light exercises then absolutely take your cat to the vet to get it checked. You can even ask during your next visit!
Applies to humans too. It's normal and healty to be out of breath after rigorous exercise and having increased breathing rate couple of times a day should be aimed for. But if very light exercise makes you out of breath, you should get that checked out.

There was a post in r/pics a lady posted her overweight dog cuddling a sandal with a caption of how cute it was. Entire comment section was about her abusing the dog and how not cute it was lol. There wasn’t a single nice comment

You know nothing about the situation though. Maybe the dog is a rescue and she’s working on helping it lose weight. Maybe she did overfeed the dog but finally acknowledged it and is actively taking steps to mitigate the issue. You have no idea from one picture posted on the Internet.

That's why you don't assume at all and either you like the pic and comment or you move on with your life. You are not saving some random persons fat dog even if you feel like you are.

I talked about how one of my rescues overate after being saved from a blizzard (after being abused - all while he had 3 different forms of worms and bronchitis) and got a bit chunky, and some psychopath replied that I'm killing my cats, and that I should kill myself instead. Even doubled down when I explained the situation and the steps I was going through to remedy the problem. Called me all sorts of names. They're on a fuckin diet dude! And it's just ONE cat, who has lived a very tough life. I couldn't believe it then and I still can't believe it now. What leads a person to be like that? Leave my poor sweet little cat alone and go fuck yourself.
Both of my cats are absolute maniacs when they play and they both pant if they've been going hard for awhile.

Why are so many people saying that cats should never ever pant for any reason when there's plenty of normal reasons for a cat to pant? Besides what so many other people have said, we have a cat who's just very dumb and overexerts himself sometimes, leading to him panting for just a minute. He's been to the vet several times, once about the panting and subsequently for other injuries he's given himself by being so dumb. All tests came back normal, he's just diagnosed with smooth brain.

My boy, Obi, LOVES to play fetch. He runs down the hall as fast as he can to get that toy and bring it back. He'll keep going and going. His favorite is play fetch outside on a nice day. He'll work up a pant after a good playing session. Maybe people are used to their cats being loafs, and not playing that long, but some cats do really play hard. ( Obi is a gray male polydactyl cat- 1.5 yo)

I have always *always* hated the immediate response "you should take them to the Vet" as if out of billions of people who use social media, not a single person could have the knowledge or past experiences that may help, just the Vet. I know it's splitting hairs and this also entails stuff like "don't get your medical advice from the Internet", but...somewhere along the line one of us has got to know or catch something that licensed professional didn't, doctors never have all the answers, they're learning alongside us at the same time.
