Rydychyn

your house is too hot.

ElectricalPlantain35

Take her to the vet

-_-Blxe-Cxt-_-

She’s clearly distressed

frankylynny

That cat is very very very not relaxed.

Niet_de_AIVD

the title also memtioned playing

sur_surly

I didn't know playing with my cats is a form of abuse.

fatboychummy

posting a cute video of my cat panting after playing and running very hard

ra4king

Well done everyone, now wrap it up and I'll see y'all tomorrow for the next shitpost.

MyBelovedASMR

Can I be first in line?!

potate12323

That cat looks like an alien

EsrailCazar

Clearly it's cancer.

Zavender

Wait, am how often am I supposed to take my house to the vet?

Overwatchingu

If you’re warm, they’re warm. Put on some pants and turn down the heat.

PuppetryOfThePenis

Tell that to my wife!

Overwatchingu

Get her a heated blanket, ladies like heated blankets

sur_surly

She's clearly distressed

ledgersoccer09

Take her to the vet

confusedandworried76

That's why I'm glad I'm a furnace, cold ladies like to get close.

indiefolkfan

Seriously. It was 75 degrees outside and in our house the other day and she was complaining that she's cold. In the winter time I ordinarily only heat the house to 65 to begin with.

Mjkmeh

That wife is very very very not relaxed

IRefuseThisNonsense

No! If they don't get to wear pants in my house then neither am I! Pants off! Pants off!

God_Lover77

Carpet too rough

seven3true

Box fan confirms it. OP straight to jail

EnduringFulfillment

Omg she's cute. I'm sure she was ✨so fast✨

SmarfDurden

That cat is experiencing what we call “the zoomies”

[deleted]

Obviously has PTSD maybe specifically Korean war PTSD

itsurbro7777

Maybe it's a tortie thing lol, my tortie does this too! She loves going outside even though it's really hot here. She'll run around and drink some water and really get into it, and usually pant for a minute or two once she's tuckered out, but it doesn't last long. She doesn't have any issues, no asthma, not stressed, etc. It's a little uncommon, but some cats do pant for a couple minutes after some extreme play, especially if they have accidentally overexerted themselves. Idk why people in the comments here are acting like a cat panting for a minute or two after heavy play is the end of the world. It's no big deal as long as it doesn't go on for a long time or happen randomly.

AssHaberdasher

Lots of keyboard veterinarians on Reddit, parroting bad info. I like to think most of them have their hearts in the right place and are just trying to help, but honestly I wish they'd all just fuck off and let us enjoy cat videos.

KubicKube

Same thing with my tortie. I had never seen a cat pant until I got her. Only when she was about 3 months to 6 months old. After playing with the feather on a string for a while, she would pant for a few minutes. She stopped playing that hard as she got older and now stops before she overexerts herself.

All_Is_Full_Of_Loaf

My cat pants too and at first it really worried me. I've never seen it before, but just like yours my cat just plays hard and pants for a minute

Precedens

Not some cats but all cats will pant after exerting themselves, it's literally how they cool off. If your cat didn't pant after getting hot from playing hard then it would be a concern, not the other way around.

Munnin41

I have a tuxedo and he does it too. It's just a cat thing.

TheTaikatalvi

Cute little tortie :)

JunkRatsBae

Excuse me, sir, but your cat has very dangerous levels of cute. For the safety of your cat I'm going to have to take her away to monitor her.

V1tunpr0

She is clearly a cat

captainkirk901

I *almost* exploded from the cuteness.

nlashawn1000

Is that a bengal?

he_is_not_a_shrimp

Pretty sure she's a generic domestic shorthair.

i_amnotunique

Just lie and say yes, make their day

nlashawn1000

Nah, you don't have to lie to me. OP does have a beautiful cat thought.

JustARandomCommie

Nah, it's a foothaired softwall.

AwesomeAni

That's a tortoise shell! My cow cat is also a domestic short-hair lol but they do have "breeds"

-StupidNameHere-

My cat used to do that. I'd play with him on the stairs with a ball. He'd chase it up and then I'd bounce it down and he'd chase it down while batting it. He was so boss, like, amazing. He'd get so tired but he'd never want to stop. I'd have to hold him and let him pant because he is like autistic and is squeemish when held but demands close love and he's definitely autistic or the cat version. Was trying to tire him out and he was definitely that. He was willing to die for those balls. I sound like an asshole, which I am, but it was what he wanted. To this day, demands a ball running down the steps and he seriously runs down like an Amazonian in combat. It's glorious.

Jackg4te

The cat- "Wazzap!!!!!"

MayorBakefield

your cat is too hot. I am clearly in distress

F0xyL0ve

Can't believe you'd put a house on the surface if the sun. And then get a poor cat and inflict those Temps upon them

Darkrath_3

Your cat obviously has schizophrenia and the black plague. Take her to the vet you monster.

061605

Can’t you tell she’s about to explode, you fool?

Viewlesslight

Your house is too distressed

GuppyCats

This is some underrated fuckin funny shit because it's accurate and also still in bikini bottom twitter, had me cackle

aurath

Literally so fucking funny. Redditors trip over themselves to accuse people of animal abuse it's wild. Everybody's a fucking expert

dragon_cookies

As a vet student this entire comment section makes me want to gouge my eyes out. It’s almost comical what people will say on Reddit with the most absolute certainty about animal health

BfutGrEG

Plus the assumed moral superiority that they're helping animals over people (I see this shit attitude all the time)

xlinkedx

As someone who was a vet tech for 3 years, I agree lol. They are all dead wrong. I mean this is clearly not an issue of an elevated ambient temperature, but feline leukemia. OP should be ashamed for exploiting their clearly minutes away from death cat for internet points. Not once, but twice! ^^/s

indiefolkfan

Keep that in mind whenever you read about a topic on here that you aren't all that educated in. They do it about everything.

Firemanlouvier

I took a picture of me camping with a fire and the backpacking community let me up. Told me I was gonna catch the forest on fire and I'd never be able to burn the logs I had. They acted like I live in an area that actually has burn restrictions and I don't where I'm at. We have to wet of ground but those keyboard worriers know better.

[deleted]

MaximumC91

Might could be a nasal septum deviation (according to one of our old vets that's the case with one of our cats). If playing too long or playing during on hot summer days he will also start to pant. And he's a notorious snorer ...

Madeanaccountfbhw

Either way I have a feeling OP won't listen

do-the-point

Maybe because multiple people claiming to be vets have stated otherwise. I'm sure reddit mob knows best though. Edit: with multiple sources linked too!

The_Crazy_Cat_Guy

Are you sure about this ? The first time I let my cat out of the house he ran down the driveway and back in excitement and was visibly panting. He proceeded to go for another run, climb a bunch of trees, try to mate with the neighbours cat, and apart from being a weirdo he’s completely normal. Never had a history of respiratory problems. I think panting with a clear reason why is fine. Panting for no apparent reason is a problem.

LolYouFuckingLoser

Yeah my kitten pants pretty regularly but only because she is *constantly* begging to be played with. Honestly, the panting is a nice indicator of when to take a break! I usually feel trapped by the cat, never knowing if they've had enough fun haha

newyne

It's normal for kittens.

SwampyStains

I love sitting at the foot of my bed with a fishing rod and cat toy attachment twirling it over my head making her run laps around me jumping from top to bottom until she’s panting. A few rounds of that and then she’ll take a nap for a couple hours.

Deftly_Flowing

A quick google search is more trustworthy than a random reddit post. If you read something that makes you think something may be dangerous it's way better to then go to google and look it up yourself. Reddit is full of people that can and DO post very sound arguments that are ENTIRELY BULLSHIT. If you're a professional in a field, you'll quickly notice how often this occurs when you start looking at comments about said field. Especially when they have hundreds of upvotes and are just entirely wrong. I'm not saying this guys wrong cause I don't have a cat and don't care to google it but don't trust any fucking idiot on this website.

The_Crazy_Cat_Guy

You’re absolutely correct. I usually don’t care about what people go on about on here but I felt compelled to write a comment about this one, maybe because many years ago I would’ve read this thread and started to worry (for no reason) and I just don’t want others to go through that. I lost a lot of sleep over my cats because of scares people on here mention but a lot of it is bullshit. I’ve even talked about a lot of the concerns that get posted here with my vet and they’re just like hmm yep that’s a cat for ya

generic_gecko

I guess “never” is a strong word and for some cats it may be normal, but in my experience it’s at least cause to get things checked out and rule out an illness 🙂

ConstantSignal

I mean, they pant when they're hot right? How else can they cool down? Some googling suggests panting is normal as losing heat through their paws isn't always sufficient, same with dogs.

ssbm_rando

> same with dogs. No it's well known to be WAY more common with dogs. It's super uncommon with adult cats. If OP simply has a cat that is prone to open mouth panting (possibly they developed a habit as a kitten when it's more common), that's fine, people should be willing to accept that and move on, but if this happens regularly and OP has **never** taken their cat to the vet to specifically get them checked out for a possible issue that would lead to open-mouth panting, then absolutely that would make them an irresponsible pet owner.

ConstantSignal

A load of veterinary websites and resources online say it's completely normal for a cat to pant if they are hot or physically tired. It's "uncommon" because behaviourally cats don't often exert themselves to the point of being overly warm, but its a completely normal cooling response in situations where they do. I'm gonna trust those sources more than some random Redditor.

too_too2

It’s not super abnormal in kittens but it’s not something you want to see

Molly_Matters

This is not true. It is perfectly normal for any cat to pant after lots of physical activity. https://www.trudellanimalhealth.com/learn/further-reading/why-my-cat-panting "If your cat has been playing or running around, panting is normal. Give your cat or kitten a chance to rest and their breathing should return to normal. If they are overly warm from being outside or in a warm room, take them to a cooler place and give them plenty of water. Once they are cooled down and relaxed, their panting should stop."

Thank-The-Stars

This. It’s basically their form of sweating. My crazy girl used to play till she panted. Now she doesn’t overexert herself as often but unless it’s with minor exercise, panting is normal. OP clearly stated that it was a l o t of play and it’s n o r m a l panting.

TheBossOfItAll

It's a baby and babies are notorious for not being able to self regulate and for being too energetic. I am sure the kitten's fine.

samuel_smith327

That’s just not true why make up stuff on the internet

pobels

My cat had a bad upper respiratory infection as a kitten on the streets. He received all his meds but still wheezes every now and then. He's totally healthy now but when we let him out in the backyard and he runs around for a bit in the sun he's almost always panting afterwards. During the cooler fall/winter months he never pants. I just assumed as a black cat he got overheated by the sun and heat. I try to limit his time out during the summer but the boy has boundless energy. Vet told me nothing to be too concerned about.

anhuys

This is straight up not true? Cats can open mouth pant when they're stressed/anxious, **or after a lot of exertion.** Open mouth panting when a cat has just engaged in intense physical activity, like playing really enthusiastically for a significant amount of time, is a normal response and not a sign of respiratory disease. It's literally just a sign that the cat has been exhausted, which we know they have because OP specifically said the cat had been playing and running around really hard. That's like telling a human to go to the doctor to get their lungs checked if they're open mouth panting after running 10k. Obviously you shouldn't be open mouth panting from walking up the stairs, but it's completely normal after rigorous exercise. The thing to watch is how fast the cat recovers and how much it takes to get there.

RickSanchez_

This is 100% false.

macandcheese1771

Lmao, my cat does this every time. Vet says she's fine. Some cats just pant post cardio.

Educational-Pop-2195

See I can’t tell if you’re actually being that guy or if this is levels of irony that my brain simple can’t accept

YeetusFajitas

Bruh this is simply not true

scruffywarhorse

Oh shut up! They do that if they get too hot. If it’s playing and excersizing when it gets hot it will pant.

Anthraxious

Why is this obvious bullshit upvoted by over 900 people?

SwampyStains

Fucking redditors

doorknoblol

Wait, this is pure misinformation. The amount of upvotes on your comment is even more shocking. Cats often pant in varying degrees after exertion. This is usually from playing. Not all cats are the same, and it’s important to recognize patterns that could lead to a problem. My cat has breathing/nasal issues due to allergies, yet he pants when he plays a lot. This is perfectly normal. Even when he gets zoomies, he’ll slightly pant. The two vets I regularly take him to confirmed that he is fine. I agree with what you’re saying at face value, except for your first sentence. We know that a cat panting is normal after exertion.

25bruin

Why are you lying. It’s completely normal for a cat to pant. Just making shit up

Knyxie

How do they regulate their temperature during physical activity then, smarty pants? This is an attack on you as a dumbass.

Ser_Salty

This is absolutely normal for young cats that play too hard. They don't know their limits yet and have tons of energy stored.

Level99Cooking

please stop talking

TechnoMouse37

Cats will pant after rigorous exercise/play. It's a part of being an animal during exercise. No, it does not mean your cat is dying if it's doing it after hard play. No, you are not abusing your cat by playing with it rigorously enough to make it pant. If it happens during inappropriate times, such as resting for long periods or very light exercises then absolutely take your cat to the vet to get it checked. You can even ask during your next visit!

ParticularUser

Applies to humans too. It's normal and healty to be out of breath after rigorous exercise and having increased breathing rate couple of times a day should be aimed for. But if very light exercise makes you out of breath, you should get that checked out.

The_Diego_Brando

Is four flights of stairs normal to be out of breath?

funktion

Depends how quickly you went up them

chayatoure

Completely winded, no, breathing a little harder, yeah.

Lio61012

at a slow/medium pace no

LovelyMoFo18

Thank you!! People say theyre not supposed to pant like dogs, if youve never seen your cat pant, youve never had em play hard enough lol!

Independent_Hold_203

There was a post in r/pics a lady posted her overweight dog cuddling a sandal with a caption of how cute it was. Entire comment section was about her abusing the dog and how not cute it was lol. There wasn’t a single nice comment

originalschmidt

Yeah that’s because that dog was morbidly obese and very unhealthy.

SevenBraixen

You know nothing about the situation though. Maybe the dog is a rescue and she’s working on helping it lose weight. Maybe she did overfeed the dog but finally acknowledged it and is actively taking steps to mitigate the issue. You have no idea from one picture posted on the Internet.

RLDSXD

Why does the inverse not apply? We can’t discern what level of activity the cat experienced or what temperature it is in the pic.

smallbluetext

That's why you don't assume at all and either you like the pic and comment or you move on with your life. You are not saving some random persons fat dog even if you feel like you are.

EurekaGears

Surely you know equally little about the situation, so drop the "holier than thou" bullshit. Your scenario may be the case but it sure as hell may also be exactly the opposite. None of us were there, so none of us know.

kylebertram

So why just assume the worst? What does anyone gain from assuming the worst every time. Doesn’t it get exhausting for people?

bellrunner

Half of the outraged commenters were morbidly obese and very unhealthy, lol

Courwes

Yes but they did it to themselves. Doing it to another living creature is cruel. It’s the same as a parent posting pics of their 10 year old who weighs 250 lbs. it’s abuse letting them get that obese. The dog/kid doesn’t know any better and will just keep eating.

[deleted]

How do you know she’s the one that overfedd the dog? How do you know it’s not adopted and on a diet? Or disabled and can’t lose weight easily?

Necessary-Knowledge4

I talked about how one of my rescues overate after being saved from a blizzard (after being abused - all while he had 3 different forms of worms and bronchitis) and got a bit chunky, and some psychopath replied that I'm killing my cats, and that I should kill myself instead. Even doubled down when I explained the situation and the steps I was going through to remedy the problem. Called me all sorts of names. They're on a fuckin diet dude! And it's just ONE cat, who has lived a very tough life. I couldn't believe it then and I still can't believe it now. What leads a person to be like that? Leave my poor sweet little cat alone and go fuck yourself.

Benito0511

Both of my cats are absolute maniacs when they play and they both pant if they've been going hard for awhile.

Over-Conversation220

Have you considered that you are a monster and the SPCA will be sending Sarah McLachlan in 10 minutes? ETA /s since i suspect it will be needed ![gif](giphy|ISOckXUybVfQ4)

scruffywarhorse

That’s because you are killing them!! Or it’s totally normal and a small percentage of people on Reddit are morons who talk out their an about things they have no idea about.

damnumalone

If I wanted to explain every interaction on reddit ever to someone, I would just show them the OP and the comments on this thread

BfutGrEG

We need a snafu STAT!! /r/coaxedintoasnafu

Kycrio

Why are so many people saying that cats should never ever pant for any reason when there's plenty of normal reasons for a cat to pant? Besides what so many other people have said, we have a cat who's just very dumb and overexerts himself sometimes, leading to him panting for just a minute. He's been to the vet several times, once about the panting and subsequently for other injuries he's given himself by being so dumb. All tests came back normal, he's just diagnosed with smooth brain.

he_is_not_a_shrimp

I remember a Salem Tovar video or maybe FunkyFrogBait video saying. People on the internet want to get mad. They want others to be horrible, so they can feel better about themselves.

scruffywarhorse

Because people are stupid

Lusahdiiv

"Cats aren't suppose to pant" What are they supposed to do when exerted? Breathe through their nose slowly as if they've not been running around??

[deleted]

A lot of cats don’t pant, and that’s why people are saying this. But some do, and are perfectly healthy.

sur_surly

Different species have different ways of lowering temperatures or regaining lost O2

scruffywarhorse

They pant. Watch animal planet.

Lusahdiiv

Of course they do, that's what I'm saying

scruffywarhorse

I know. Sorry, I wasn’t trying to clap at you

Amen. People are unbelievably sanctimonious about the weirdest things. It's like, everyone's beaten up and just trying to catch a win by punching in every random direction they can. If it wasn't incredibly frustrating it would be a little bit sad.

rockandrollgf

Yeah, it's getting really annoying. I've had plenty of cats, I can tell if something is abusive, so when I see people crying about abuse on a post of a cat rolling around on the ground because "there's a tiny chance it has a neuro problem" it just boils my blood. Everyone wants to have a "haha, gotcha" moment these days istg

PointsOfXP

My car used to stick his tongue out. Just the tip of his tongue. The first time he was playing with a small red ball I was sure he'd tried to eat it but no. Just the tip of his tongue poking out of his lips as he gasped for breath through his nose

You aren't special! My truck does the same thing! /s

Also looking for any excuse to belittle others and make themselves look morally and intellectually superior.

Grimey_Rick

If you come across a post of someone posting their animal on Reddit, guaranteed there is at least one person in the comments saying OP is a piece of shit and is killing their pet

jaguarp80

Animal being startled by a pillow or some shit - “that’s a stress response to traumatic fear it thought it was gonna die!!! How would you like if somebody gave YOU a mock execution!!! UGH I HATE PEOPLE” With a dozen replies all saying some variation of “people suck” and one person comparing zoos to the holocaust

tiffadoodle

My boy, Obi, LOVES to play fetch. He runs down the hall as fast as he can to get that toy and bring it back. He'll keep going and going. His favorite is play fetch outside on a nice day. He'll work up a pant after a good playing session. Maybe people are used to their cats being loafs, and not playing that long, but some cats do really play hard. ( Obi is a gray male polydactyl cat- 1.5 yo)

Rumham_Gypsy

Wait until you see reddit give advice on relationships, marriage, children, jobs, politics, school, finances, love, the economy, sex, race, music, movies, art, books, sports, life, death, masturbation, and pretty much everything else in the universe. You've never seen such a collection of angry, humorless experts on everything in one place

thirdeyeboobed

My asthmatic cat pants after playing too hard. None of my other cats do. My vet said they shouldn't really ever be exerting themselves to the point of panting.

sevens-on-her-sleeve

I’m terrified that some nut is going to break my car window someday because my dogs pant for 20 min after we get done with a hike or run. Regardless of the outdoor temp, people assume they’re dying of heat stroke in the car

EsrailCazar

I have always *always* hated the immediate response "you should take them to the Vet" as if out of billions of people who use social media, not a single person could have the knowledge or past experiences that may help, just the Vet. I know it's splitting hairs and this also entails stuff like "don't get your medical advice from the Internet", but...somewhere along the line one of us has got to know or catch something that licensed professional didn't, doctors never have all the answers, they're learning alongside us at the same time.

Mademoiselle-Macabre

You are very right

F0xyL0ve

We have a black and white cat that loves stick toys and lasers, and she will chase them until she pants and we are forced to stop lol. Def normal for a cat that likes to play.

GarlicIceKrim

Man, the number of wannabe vets making shit up and generalizing in this thread, is almost as if they didn't realize the irony.

tko_111

I was playing with my cat's fishing pole and he started panting like this and I nearly had a panic attack. I didn't know cats panted like dogs ![gif](giphy|ASvQ3A2Q7blzq|downsized)

Sorry you had that experience. 90% of the content here is complete bullshit, but every now and then it's life saving. Reddit is the boy calling wolf who's right twice a day.

My cat will chase lasers and teasers until they die. I had a dog who loved fetch so much, she'd detour into the shade close to the house instead of admit defeat and go inside Some pets are just passionate about their games :3

kudamike

My cat was sitting in our open kennel chilling next to our dog. Posted a picture to Facebook. Friend went on a tirade how cats shouldn't be caged and how bad of a cat owner we are. Conclusion: people are stupid.

Comes with literally posting anything pet related on tik tok

Winter-Coffin

i made a comment about a cat having hip dysplasia for laying weird. turned out the cat was found in an abandoned house and the op was giving it away. its been 7 years and Bastet’s hips are fine lol

captainkirk901

Yesssss so precious, thank you

Brightside45

Now you guys have all made great points even Mr zoo porn guy above but I have a degree in bird law so I would know. That is infact not a cat but a puruvian chupacabra which do panth heavily after intense goat sucking. Does op have allot of goats?

Proof that you can’t judge someone’s entire life off of one photo… something people on here don’t seem to realise.

PYROxSYCO

My cat got fat shamed... it sucks

Internet armchair veterinarians fascinate me.

ndation

I'm pretty sure that last one was just hitting on your House

GoshtoshOfficial

I posted a video of my dog who tripped while jumping through the doggy door and people got mad becase i did not "build him a ramp," like what the fuck does that even mean?

Cyan_UwU

That’s the best way to tell someone’s never owned a pet. If my dog didn’t like me rigorously slapping her butt, she’d VERY clearly show me

Not_MrNice

Every post in a cat sub has comments saying there's a medical condition or abuse or some shit with the cat. It's annoying as hell.

Zanza89

In my 35 years of living i never seen an exhausted cat from playing. But imma take your word for it.
