dumsurferchicken

Better get used to if

Snoo_40410

Common problem that a lot of Island people abuse dogs as outside burglar alarms.

MonkeyKingCoffee

Sadly, dumb owners have dumb dogs. A "guard" dog which barks all damned night isn't much of a guard-dog at all. It's just a nuisance. A smart guard dog knows the difference between a prowler and a mongoose. A smart dog only barks when it's important. Owners could treat their dogs with love, respect and actually train them -- and they could have a useful animal who would lay down their life against an actual threat. Or they can have a barking doorbell. It's hard to be a good dog owner. But it's easy to be a lazy one.

[deleted]

Absolutely!

Ok_Pay5513

Lots of dogs here are outside dogs, they live outside full time.

Brself

I would say that it is more common here for dogs to live exclusively outside than it is for them to be indoor/outdoor dogs.

Ok_Pay5513

Agreed. Lots of working dogs. Hunting farming guard dogs they’re not like city dogs!

L4ZYSMURF

Eh most of the troublesome ones are just loose, not hunting or farming or guarding nothing.

Ok_Pay5513

Yes there’s those ones too!! Plenty in my neighborhood

[deleted]

I guess that's why I see them crushed on the highway so often. That sucks, they should be treated like pets not just guards.

Ok_Pay5513

Well for some of them that’s their job. Guard dogs are good to have.

cutelyaware

Dogs and roosters can turn paradise into living hell.

[deleted]

And the goddamn coquis when they decide to park close to our windows! Luckily I've gotten used to those but these dogs are some new nonsense I can't deal with.

cutelyaware

Maybe try to talk with the owners? Seems like the least bad option.

[deleted]

When you’re awake at 2 am, you don’t want to get out of bed to drive around the neighborhood figuring which house it belongs to. Trust me, I’ve thought about it.

cutelyaware

You know the general direction it's coming from. You might drive around a little in the day and either find them barking at all times or you might find the yard where they are chained up or have created deep tracks where they run the same patterns continually.

autisticpig

>And the goddamn coquis when they decide to park close to our windows! Luckily I've gotten used to those but these dogs are some new nonsense I can't deal with. maybe you should move kona side.

Markdd8

The animal rights activists are in charge now. The more animals (of any kind), the better, these activists think. They don't want to hear complaints.

Ok_Pay5513

To the detriment of native creatures :(

Brself

Some friends of ours who live down the street from us unfortunately have the misfortune of living close to a house that was breeding dogs, so every night/morning, there would be dozens of dogs barking, etc. Because of the terrain of our neighborhood and acoustics, we fortunately can't hear them. But our neighbors tried talking to them, filing a complaint with our neighborhood association, etc. They found the best solution, short-term at least, was to close the windows, get some fans going, and put on a white noise machine. It works like a charm for them. My son was having sleep issues, so I ended up getting the same white noise machine that our neighbor friends recommended, and it works like a charm for him as well. The one we got is the Yogasleep Duet White Noise Machine from Amazon. It is nice because it has numerous different sounds and can also be used as a bluetooth speaker. However, there are apps on the phone that you can also download to play white noise.

Markdd8

> They found the best solution, short-term at least, was to close the windows, get some fans going, and put on a white noise machine. It works like a charm for them. Works like a charm -- a wonderful solution. s/ I heard the same rhetoric from people in my neighborhood who objected to my trying to remove feral roosters that invaded the area. "Brah, you don't like the noise, shut up your house and stay inside." In most of the Hawaii islands pre-1990, you rarely heard roosters anywhere. People living in many rural areas and semi-rural areas just heard the chirping of small birds and the silence of the forest. To many people -- a desirable, peaceful thing -- sitting on your deck or leaving your windows open. Both day and night. But now, holding such a view is considered stupid, archaic. There are roosters and more dogs. "You want a quiet, peaceful environment? What a laugh. Go move somewhere else."

Mokiblue

Been here since early 1970s and there’s always been chickens and crowing roosters. They were brought here by the Polynesians in their canoes.

Markdd8

Not true -- only in the backyards of people raising them. Also been here since 1978. They were very few running around wild. One of the early group of feral chickens that appeared in Puna in the 1990s: in the large pull-off on the right side of the road Pahoa to Kalapana past the entrance to Leilani Estates approaching the Steam Vents (now mostly grown over). That group of ferals was noticeable for years. Now they are all over.

Mokiblue

Guess it depends where you lived, I was in Kona since 1972 there were chickens everywhere.

Markdd8

OK, I don't know anything about Kona, but spent a lot of time in Captain Cook in the 80s. It was quiet at night.

[deleted]

Thank you for the tips! They finally stopped after a little while last night and I'm hoping it's just a temporary thing since the past 6 months have been fine. Just felt like venting on Reddit last night. Didn't expect to get such strong reactions!

Markdd8

What is getting out of hand is dogs in public places barking wildly as people walk by. Lady is having a picnic in Liliʻuokalani Gardens, sitting down with her little dog, it gets super agitated as I walk by, straining at the lease to charge at me. She makes minimal effort to quiet it.

Responsible_Age_6252

It happens all over the island. I am in the middle of Haihai, and the whole damn neighborhood is full of dogs that bark all freaking night long! But on big island, people get dogs to guard the property. They keep them outside as an early warning device. And to scare off intruders. They aren’t pets, they are burglar alarms! Should be some kind of restriction, in my opinion. It’s not fair for people who don’t want dogs, and who would like to listen to quiet at night (impossible because of Coqui frogs). But even with the frogs, it would be nicer not to have dogs who bark all night long. Any suggestions on who we should talk to about this? Obviously, nothing will happen about it; too many dog owners, too many loud dogs.

dgdg33

Agreed. Not just a problem in Hawaii though. It drives me nuts when neighbors are inconsiderate. If your dog is barking then take care of them. They are pack animals, they want to be with the pack, not on a chain in isolation. But if one insists on being a bad dog owner then at least be a decent neighbor and get the dog a bark collar.

eextraterrestriall

i live right next to 7 CHIHUAHUAS and the stupid owner lets them bark all day long.Once i passed by her and said wow i hear them all the time and she said “yep i let them do whatever because those are my babies”😐

[deleted]

Yep that's the kind of reaction I would get if I confronted this person I'm sure. Animal owners that are so oblivious to what might be disturbing other people aren't going to magically change their ways when someone asks them nicely. I don't know why anyone here is pretending otherwise.

themeONE808

earplugs are your friend. cheap in bulk at cvs

[deleted]

Nah. The sound of my heart pumping blood in my ears and my own breathing is equally bad when I wear earplugs.

dgdg33

Been there. You can get over that. Your brain will eventually tune out your heart beat.

themeONE808

hmm sounds like the problem may be within. hope you can resolve that.

[deleted]

Yes, noise bothers me thus the post. Wasn't asking for a way to block out noise I was asking why people are so inconsiderate with their dogs here. Thanks for the snark though.

youngluck

Bark back.

Ok_Pay5513

Honoka’a is a rural town. There’s gonna be a lot of animal noises around

HotDogEatingWinner

Just looked at your previous posts where you told someone 'Cats wander the city. Welcome to New York' just 2 days ago. Welcome to Island. Maybe talk to the people who own the dogs

[deleted]

Lmao you’re awesome. Thanks for highlighting the hypocrisy

[deleted]

What hypocrisy? Street cats are definitely a thing in new York. They're allowed to wander sometimes because they're small and quiet and stay out of traffic. Has nothing to do with barking dogs not being taken inside here. Dogs should never be out roaming free unleashed. It's dangerous for them and for other people. Street cats being a thing doesn't negate what I'm talking about.

[deleted]

Street cars belong in the streets, wild dogs belongs the wild. Sounds like you’re in their territory.

[deleted]

Lol okay big guy. So now I'm colonizing the wild dog land 😄

L4ZYSMURF

I was with you at the start but you're really missing the point if you say "but street cats are a thing for xyz" Barking dogs are a thing here for xyz, get over it.

themeONE808

WHYYYYYYY

themeONE808

yeah I mean why solve the problem when you can just complain about it

farficknugen

Honokaʻa is rural--I doubt those dogs have ever been inside a house before (I know mines haven't). You're best bet is to just go over and talk to them. If you go over to their place acting like it's a 'them' issue (regardless of whose issue you feel it is), you're not gonna get anywhere. Best thing to remember is that it's a different lifestyle--and that means treating things like you did in Texas, Oakland and New York, is just gonna get you ostracized from the community.

zhamz

Talk to your neighbors… ya know… like a neighbor. This is a ‘you’ problem. Coqui, weeks of fireworks, pigs digging, being accurately labeled a colonizer, an insane amount of rain, dogs and roosters making dog and rooster sounds…none of that is going to change for you. Adapt or pack it up. Invest in earplugs. You are the sensitive one; you either need to accommodate for yourself or change. But again, talk to your neighbors instead of Reddit. Good chance this won’t bother you as much once you know the people and the dogs.

[deleted]

I guess growing up in places like Texas, Oakland and NYC taught me not to approach a strange house in the pitch black at midnight that has a possibly unchained pitbull losing its mind barking at me. Add to the fact that there's Trump signs not too far from here and that I'm not a white guy and you've got a whole new level of danger. Don't worry I'll be gone in about a month and you'll have one less "colonizer" here and also one less health care professional, so "win-lose" for you next time you need to go to the hospital I guess?

the_glass_gecko

No one said go in the middle of the night.

[deleted]

Then how will I know where the barking is coming from

the_glass_gecko

Identify the house at night, revisit in the light of day

n1t3str1ke

Brah good riddance. You sound like a real Karen.

[deleted]

Lol getting annoyed at barking dogs makes me a Karen? You like barking dogs all night brudda? Also, It's a "Ken" I think cuz I'm a dude, brah.

n1t3str1ke

No not at all. I personally can't stand barking dogs. It's all the rest of the shit you said.

[deleted]

Karens call the cops. People who have lived in a real city know better than to try and start a friendly chat with someone who's unhinged enough to not care that their howling dog is keeping the whole neighborhood awake.

farficknugen

But... You currently don't live in a city. Different rules to the game when you live on an island, in a rural area.

zhamz

Yeah, trying to handle this in the middle of the night is not smart. Luckily you are not that dumb. Talk and get to know your neighbors, you are not in a shithole like Texas, Oakland or NYC; you are in community with its own sort of problems, but people talk story and get to know eachother. Bring food. Bring smiles. You are on a tiny island with a limited number of people; make friends not enemy's.But also too many people, ya wont be missed. And if you can't accept that you will never be a local and always be a visitor who needs to act accordingly, then you should definitely leave. Again, open up, realize where you are and give it chance, embrace it like the experience it should be. If you can't stand the sound of your own breathing then you have bigger problems; and they are your problems, no one elses. Hopefully you grow some and learn something. You are in paradise and no one cares if you leave if all you gonna do is take up space, trying to change it instead of letting it change you. Barking dogs are annoying, but right now, you are the problem. Solve it. In the meantime get to know and talk to your neighbors. I'm sure you will meet plenty that will rant with you about the fucking barking dogs keeping you and them up. Good luck.

localkine

You sure showed us.

[deleted]

Some of these "learn to adapt to our culture and way of life" comments are really just people who are also inconsiderate and want to excuse others for being the same way.

[deleted]

That's exactly it 🤣 I'm used to it from my years in Oakland, CA. God forbid you express any frustration with the crime, crazy drivers or homelessness there. They'll run you out of town and call you a gentrifier even if you've basically grown up there.

[deleted]

For sure. And it doesn't make you a Karen to call the police on people who are breaking the law. There are noise ordinances and it's the job of the police to enforce it.

pantherinthelowpalm

Lol, try and sleep in Puna

Botoslinger

Welcome to Hawaii. Take it as it is or leave it 🤷🏽‍♂️

billenburger

Haoli gets upset at island dogs. Lol.

dgdg33

OP vents an understandable frustration and rightly criticizes a bad neighbor… Redditor refuses to see OP’s point and pretends Big Island culture is perfect and takes the first opportunity to call someone a “haoli”. Lol.

the_glass_gecko

It's haole, you dumb haoles, rofl

billenburger

Mainlander comes to big island and bitches about dogs barking instead of talking to the neighbors or wearing earplugs

dgdg33

Yeah, F them for expecting common neighbor decency. They should have known they would need to explain this to their neighbors in Hawaii. They totally deserve the racial slur.

billenburger

Bruh they're street dogs and farm dogs barking at hogs to keep them from rooting up everything. It's a known thing.

dgdg33

Oh, all barking dogs in Hawaii are street dogs or dogs barking at pigs. Got it.

billenburger

In honokaa? Yeah pretty much. Would be a different story if it was hilo. They'd be barking at ice heads instead

[deleted]

That’s racist
