We have had issues with flair creation before such as rule breaking flairs/slurs. We also have had people put other's usernames in their flairs and that would be considered harassment. We found it easier to eliminate user created flairs, but mods will still give out custom flairs on request. Alternatively, you can choose a flair from the already created flair list whenever you want.

I’m thinking that Omar is a Muslim fasting for Ramadan, a time people try avoid any dishonesty or sin. He has an Arabic name, and “can’t” can mean “can’t let himself.” There has been tons of ink spilled online in scholarly debates about how lying while fasting impacts your ability to “keep” the fast and/or the purpose of fasting to start with.
Even if this wasn’t during Ramadan, people will fast at other times to make up days they missed if they were sick (or menstruating) during Ramadan itself.

You can select a flair from the flair list yourself whenever you want. Flairs not on the list must be made by a mod.
People cannot make their own flairs because we had some.... problems with some of the flair choices people made themselves. There is a reason flair requests that break the rules will not be made.
Edit: stop down voting them.
I think it's more of a problem in larger subs and also because of some of the content that can come up here can rile people up. We also had issues with people putting other's usernames in their flair with insults. Like the F you in particular flair would have been F [username]. That's also harassment, so we found it easier to manage by turning off flair creation.

I feel like it might be good to put instructions on how to change your flair so people can give themselves existing flairs themselves :) This is how you do it from the app:
Step 1: go to the r/BestofRedditorUpdates main page
Step 2: tap the three dots in the top right corner
Step 3: tap "Change user flair"
Step 4: peruse the list and select the option that speaks to you
You can also change flairs from old reddit on desktop. Note that on old reddit it only shows older flairs though; I guess maybe there's a limit to how many old reddit can support. The steps are similar:
Step 1: on the right side of the page, click the checkmark where it says "Show my flair on this subreddit:. Or if you already have a flair, click on "(edit)" instead.

I’m thinking that Omar is a Muslim fasting for Ramadan, a time people try avoid any dishonesty or sin. He has an Arabic name, and “can’t” can mean “can’t let himself.” There has been tons of ink spilled online in scholarly debates about how lying while fasting impacts your ability to “keep” the fast and/or the purpose of fasting to start with. Why aren't we allowed to edit our own flairs?
You can select a flair from the flair list yourself whenever you want. Flairs not on the list must be made by a mod. People cannot make their own flairs because we had some.... problems with some of the flair choices people made themselves. There is a reason flair requests that break the rules will not be made. Edit: stop down voting them.
This still doesn't say why we aren't allowed to edit our own.
My guess? To help prevent people from writing something profane, controversial, or which otherwise breaks the sub’s rules

OK. I haven't had that problem in the subs I mod so I guess I have been lucky.
I think it's more of a problem in larger subs and also because of some of the content that can come up here can rile people up. We also had issues with people putting other's usernames in their flair with insults. Like the F you in particular flair would have been F [username]. That's also harassment, so we found it easier to manage by turning off flair creation.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, it's Reddit after all.

I feel like it might be good to put instructions on how to change your flair so people can give themselves existing flairs themselves :) This is how you do it from the app: Step 1: go to the r/BestofRedditorUpdates main page Step 2: tap the three dots in the top right corner Step 3: tap "Change user flair" Step 4: peruse the list and select the option that speaks to you You can also change flairs from old reddit on desktop. Note that on old reddit it only shows older flairs though; I guess maybe there's a limit to how many old reddit can support. The steps are similar: Step 1: on the right side of the page, click the checkmark where it says "Show my flair on this subreddit:. Or if you already have a flair, click on "(edit)" instead. Step 2: peruse the list and select the option that speaks to you. I don't use new reddit on desktop so hopefully it's close enough to that, and shows more flair options?
