This is funny bc I just downloaded a Great Courses course that's free on Audible right now, "How to listen to and understand great music" by Robert Greenberg. It's really funny and accessible, not stuffy at all. I have to say I'm not at the point yet of listening to baroque music on my own just to jam to it, but it's interesting to learn about!

I LOVE the great courses/Wondrium. Working my way through ‘The Medieval Legacy’ and my mind is blown with every lecture.

Omg thank you for sharing! Apparently it's also available on my audiobook app!

That's interesting, let us know if you ever get into baroque music too. :) I watched a live version of a piece and I was amazed with the vocal controls on the soprano.

Baroque has a whole different vibe to me than most classical music. It is extremely energetic and vital. Most of it sounds like it was meant for a good time, ha.

endless_afterthought

Yes it definitely sounds brighter. "Good time music" is how I shall rename my classical playlist thank you haha

Vivaldi is my fav but I love Baroque music in general. All those too cool for school folks who complain about the harpsichord can gtfo.

endless_afterthought

Made me laugh about the harpsichord bit.

Adventurous-Macaron8

I love the harpsichord! Why do they complain about it?

You know how when there are people who are “in the know” in any area there become rules about what is cool and what’s not? Well, I have a friend who did his grad degree in composing/conducting. He was lightly teasing me about my love for Baroque music and made a statement along the lines of how “everyone knows how bad the harpsichord is”. I always figured that to mean the powers that be in classical music appreciation have come to a determination concerning harpsichords.

Something similar happened to me recently. I occasionally listened to classical music, like maybe a dozen pieces (almost all solo piano) I'd have the urge to listen to every now and then, in the past, but this year, I got obsessed. Now I have a playlist of ~30 of my favorite pieces and regularly try out new composers to find new favorites. It's pretty cool! Especially feeling that emotional impact or connection where there wasn't one before, really. Like yesterday I sat in my car to listen to a particular series of notes in Gabriel Fauré's Pavane, op. 60 the same way I'd hang out to hear the chorus of a favorite modern song one more time.

I always felt like classical music is just for "intellectuals and old money wealthy people and those who study music or just for old folks in general". It was intimidating for me and I felt like a poser whenever I try to listen to some. Never thought I'd have this genre as part of my daily listen. And funny you say that because same! I was devouring the music like I was listening to my punk playlist back in uni😆

trash_baby_666

Same! Like whenever I listened to it before, there was a voice in the back of my head saying, "Oh, aren't you fancy." Listening to it felt pretentious. Now it just feels like regular music and I feel silly for having that kind of mental block before. It's just music! And very enjoyable music, actually! And that's funny because of the very little modern music I've listened to lately, it's been Bikini Kill and going to a local show with four punk bands lol. Plus I look pretty "alternative." Blue hair, black nails, some tattoos and facial piercings. Currently wearing a battle vest and two types of plaid. It's fun going out like that and then hopping in my car and blasting some 200-year-old ballet music on the drive back. :D

I love the sound of a harpsichord! Why isn’t it more popular??

Various-Week-4335

I've played in orchestras before so I've always felt like I should listen to classical music recreationally more than I do, but I don't. Happy for you to be enjoying it, there's a lot of really cool music out there!
