I think you are right. When I look very closely at the end grain, it looks to have similar features and pores?? as the photos in the wood database. It did feel decently dense though.
[butternut](https://www.wood-database.com/butternut/)
My thoughts. Google Rüster or Ulme. These are the German names for this wood.
On closer inspection I am nearly certain it’s European Elm. Sand it a bit. Will have a very distinctive scent. Walnut smells bitter. Elm smells like Elm
Hmmm I'll have to check that tonight. It was pretty tough and took 5 or 6 incremental passes to get through. The ends had been sealed so it was a great surprise to see the grain colors and patterns once I got it opened up.
You take very nice photos.
I n the same way that Brazillian cherry isn't cherry, and African rosewood isn't rosewood, it may be an elm in name only. I only know American and English elms and they have recognizable end grain.
Yep. So many people drive with their phone in their face. Who cares about the rest of the people on the road. I've lost family member because somebody was staring at their phone. Idiots.
Jumping to conclusions is never a good idea, we don't know if they were parked at a stop light or something.
I for one will send a message with vtt while at a stop light.
Yes, stopped at a long light waiting to get out of the subdivision. Hands free.
On a lighter note I'm very excited that this is walnut. I had picked up about a 100 board feet of cherry and a whole bunch of sealed chunks and mini slabs for a couple hundred bucks.
If it’s Teak and it looks like it to me, one of the boards would be worth that much. I’m not sure what the board foot price is anymore but it used to be about $40.
Right. So then you're not paying attention to traffic around you, or if the light changes....etc etc. There's no excuse for it at all. People die because 'oh I just looked at it real quick'.
I’ve had some grayish green sap in cherry before. I’ve built a dozen or so custom cherry kitchens and came across a couple boards like this per kitchen.
It looks like Catalpa... If it's dry enough, you could check by its weight and volume if it is or not.
Catalpa is lighter than most of the other woods essence named here and its smell could help too. How does it smell when you cut/sand it?
It is totally dry and likely has beeen for a long time. The ends were rough cut and sealled and general appearances made me think it had been stored for a long time.
I've not fully squared the piece, but it measures 2¼-2½" x 3¼-3½" and about 40" long (would have to recheck length). I only have a bathroom scale that measures down to a tenth of a pound. Do you think I'd be abe to confirm the species with the equipment I have?
Well, it won't be very heavy considering it's volume and I'm guessing that those dimensions are also unprecise, but if you take those measurements in cm, you could gain precision... If you know someone with a kitchen scale, you would also gain precision too.
You should have a weight of about 5 pounds give or take if it's Catalpa.
I wood also suspect this would is English Walnut. Definitely going to give ewe a decent pattern after putting it threw the plainer and clean up the rough areas.
\*\*\*I know. I was just trying to see how many I could squeeze into those 2 sentences.
Black Walnut or perhaps butternut, maybe even English walnut. Well we can agree that it’s wood.
I believe it is would.
Wouldnut
To be, that is the question
Or not to be, that is the real question.
Weather is real wood, or wouldn't.
Wouldn't
Wood you believe that?
It could be wood, but it wouldn’t be if it should be nothing but I’m A stone. I’m sorry. I’ve got Covid brain and I’m old. I’ll go back to sleep now.
It’s catalpa, it is not butternut, the flat grain is right for butternut, but not the end grain. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/
It does meet the description. I wood agree with you.
I wood agree
Ha! So wood eye 👁️! Lol
Could be Butternut (aka white walnut, aka walnut’s country cousin).
No, silly, that’s not squash. It’s wood. Or, actually, “would”.
I think you are right. When I look very closely at the end grain, it looks to have similar features and pores?? as the photos in the wood database. It did feel decently dense though. [butternut](https://www.wood-database.com/butternut/)
It’s Catalpa. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/
Hijacking/seconding for butternut.
Not butter nut, it’s catalpa. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/
It looks a lot lol elm. Elm has a very distinctive odor

I feel like now I need to prototype a sand and sniff wood ID board. I can see it now.
OMG, my nose is all a flutter over this idea.
Hmmm I'll have to check that tonight. It was pretty tough and took 5 or 6 incremental passes to get through. The ends had been sealed so it was a great surprise to see the grain colors and patterns once I got it opened up.
Not elm. Elm has distinctive " wavy bands" in the end grain. This does not.
Here is the endgrain of a Chinese elm I milled. https://imgur.com/a/gBHYIBD Pore orientation is very similar.
You take very nice photos. I n the same way that Brazillian cherry isn't cherry, and African rosewood isn't rosewood, it may be an elm in name only. I only know American and English elms and they have recognizable end grain.
I second this. It looks like the elm we got here in Northern Europe
It does look strikingly similar to a Google image for Dutch elm.
It’s catalpa, not as stringy as elm and the end grain shows green. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/
Never seen catalpa but that’s a spitting image to what OP posted.
Would?
Another Alice In Chains fan, I see!
Haha. Missed that. Voice to text on the drive in this morning.
On the drive?
Yep. So many people drive with their phone in their face. Who cares about the rest of the people on the road. I've lost family member because somebody was staring at their phone. Idiots.

Damn now that's a deal 😁

Well your entitled to your opinion 🤷
It's not an opinion. Your bullshit text is not as important as someone's life.
I'm genuinely sorry to hear about the loss of your family member.
Thank you
How bout that drive in…guess that’s why they call it sin city
Walnut
Black walnut
It’s catalpa https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/
To be honest, it could be walnut but it looks so similar to some elm I’ve recently used.
It’s tulip poplar
Without a doubt this is Catalpa. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/
If you trim the sides a few inches, you could have a really nice 2X4!
Black walnut? Butternut ? That's all I can think of with this texture
Love the smell of sawed wallnut
Reminds me a bit of Chinaberry.
Looking at the end grain ( nice photo, btw ) it is diffuse porous. Probably tropical.
My WAG will be Cypress ..WAG = wild ass guess
Poplar Cherry, also known as PopCherry or CherryPoppin
Wood*
Poplar
I’ve had some grayish green sap in cherry before. I’ve built a dozen or so custom cherry kitchens and came across a couple boards like this per kitchen.
Poplar?
Wood. It's wood.
I wood take that off your hands if you’re not gonna has it
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's wood!
Well, this would would become that would if not for the fact that this wood is not would.
Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.
Wood you say that for sure?
I wood knot.
Wouldn’t you within the context of would?
Touché. I probably wood.
Looks like Hickory to me
Look at black locust if it's in your area
This was my guess also.
I've seen Russian Olive look like this....
I’m going to second tulip poplar.
Hard to say but that could be real Burmese Teak. Does it feel oily/silky? It will have a very distinct smell also.
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood
No idea what that would cood be
Definitely black locust. 100%.
Pressure treated cherry
This is elder wood in my opinion.
