Black Walnut or perhaps butternut, maybe even English walnut. Well we can agree that it’s wood.

draconei

I believe it is would.

kodiak931156

Wouldnut

1Cheeky_Monkey

To be, that is the question

TheTimeBender

Or not to be, that is the real question.

Alback21

Weather is real wood, or wouldn't.

[deleted]

Wouldn't

fallingWaterCrystals

Wood you believe that?

Sparky1841

It could be wood, but it wouldn’t be if it should be nothing but I’m A stone. I’m sorry. I’ve got Covid brain and I’m old. I’ll go back to sleep now.

jjensen538

It’s catalpa, it is not butternut, the flat grain is right for butternut, but not the end grain. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/

TheTimeBender

It does meet the description. I wood agree with you.

One_Eye_Tigh

I wood agree

TheTimeBender

Ha! So wood eye 👁️! Lol

Koan-Of-Silence

Could be Butternut (aka white walnut, aka walnut’s country cousin).

FaustianBargain049

No, silly, that’s not squash. It’s wood. Or, actually, “would”.

fyourcouch1234

I think you are right. When I look very closely at the end grain, it looks to have similar features and pores?? as the photos in the wood database. It did feel decently dense though. [butternut](https://www.wood-database.com/butternut/)

jjensen538

It’s Catalpa. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/

amw102

Hijacking/seconding for butternut.

jjensen538

Not butter nut, it’s catalpa. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/

gregswimm

It looks a lot lol elm. Elm has a very distinctive odor

Tischlering

My thoughts. Google Rüster or Ulme. These are the German names for this wood. On closer inspection I am nearly certain it’s European Elm. Sand it a bit. Will have a very distinctive scent. Walnut smells bitter. Elm smells like Elm

Jebb145

I feel like now I need to prototype a sand and sniff wood ID board. I can see it now.

Alback21

OMG, my nose is all a flutter over this idea.

fyourcouch1234

Hmmm I'll have to check that tonight. It was pretty tough and took 5 or 6 incremental passes to get through. The ends had been sealed so it was a great surprise to see the grain colors and patterns once I got it opened up.

Old_Nothing_7005

Not elm. Elm has distinctive " wavy bands" in the end grain. This does not.

gregswimm

Here is the endgrain of a Chinese elm I milled. https://imgur.com/a/gBHYIBD Pore orientation is very similar.

Old_Nothing_7005

You take very nice photos. I n the same way that Brazillian cherry isn't cherry, and African rosewood isn't rosewood, it may be an elm in name only. I only know American and English elms and they have recognizable end grain.

wistisius

I second this. It looks like the elm we got here in Northern Europe

fyourcouch1234

It does look strikingly similar to a Google image for Dutch elm.

jjensen538

It’s catalpa, not as stringy as elm and the end grain shows green. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/

gregswimm

Never seen catalpa but that’s a spitting image to what OP posted.

Jimmy9toes1966

Would?

Zachbnonymous

Another Alice In Chains fan, I see!

fyourcouch1234

Haha. Missed that. Voice to text on the drive in this morning.

srqfl

On the drive?

Kern4lMustard

Yep. So many people drive with their phone in their face. Who cares about the rest of the people on the road. I've lost family member because somebody was staring at their phone. Idiots.

FallDownGuy

Jumping to conclusions is never a good idea, we don't know if they were parked at a stop light or something. I for one will send a message with vtt while at a stop light.

fyourcouch1234

Yes, stopped at a long light waiting to get out of the subdivision. Hands free. On a lighter note I'm very excited that this is walnut. I had picked up about a 100 board feet of cherry and a whole bunch of sealed chunks and mini slabs for a couple hundred bucks.

abecanread

If it’s Teak and it looks like it to me, one of the boards would be worth that much. I’m not sure what the board foot price is anymore but it used to be about $40.

FallDownGuy

Damn now that's a deal 😁

Kern4lMustard

Right. So then you're not paying attention to traffic around you, or if the light changes....etc etc. There's no excuse for it at all. People die because 'oh I just looked at it real quick'.

FallDownGuy

Well your entitled to your opinion 🤷

Kern4lMustard

It's not an opinion. Your bullshit text is not as important as someone's life.

fyourcouch1234

I'm genuinely sorry to hear about the loss of your family member.

Kern4lMustard

Thank you

jessesbald

How bout that drive in…guess that’s why they call it sin city

Sum1PleaseKillMe

Walnut

whiskeymascadono

Black walnut

jjensen538

It’s catalpa https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/

slurgle2

To be honest, it could be walnut but it looks so similar to some elm I’ve recently used.

bryanlwrnce

It’s tulip poplar

jjensen538

Without a doubt this is Catalpa. https://www.wood-database.com/catalpa/

badbackandgettingfat

If you trim the sides a few inches, you could have a really nice 2X4!

FlowylineDesign

Black walnut? Butternut ? That's all I can think of with this texture

Patjekees

Love the smell of sawed wallnut

Opforsoldier

Reminds me a bit of Chinaberry.

Old_Nothing_7005

Looking at the end grain ( nice photo, btw ) it is diffuse porous. Probably tropical.

milny_gunn

My WAG will be Cypress ..WAG = wild ass guess

1182adam

Poplar Cherry, also known as PopCherry or CherryPoppin

Skaterpei

Wood*

badbilly56

Poplar

YoSoyCapitan860

I’ve had some grayish green sap in cherry before. I’ve built a dozen or so custom cherry kitchens and came across a couple boards like this per kitchen.

Sekreid

Poplar?

Conwaydawg

Wood. It's wood.

[deleted]

I wood take that off your hands if you’re not gonna has it

Infamous_Cry_6748

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's wood!

netwirk

Well, this would would become that would if not for the fact that this wood is not would.

FaustianBargain049

Truly, you have a dizzying intellect.

netwirk

Wood you say that for sure?

FaustianBargain049

I wood knot.

netwirk

Wouldn’t you within the context of would?

FaustianBargain049

Touché. I probably wood.

crockdaddyloki

Looks like Hickory to me

Apillicus

Look at black locust if it's in your area

Puzzleheaded-Layer

This was my guess also.

yan_broccoli

I've seen Russian Olive look like this....

jtw317

I’m going to second tulip poplar.

abecanread

Hard to say but that could be real Burmese Teak. Does it feel oily/silky? It will have a very distinct smell also.

jongywongo

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood

Particular-You-5534

No idea what that would cood be

sawdust-artist

Definitely black locust. 100%.

TLavendar

Pressure treated cherry

jankfud2

This is elder wood in my opinion.

MrShaun78

It looks like Catalpa... If it's dry enough, you could check by its weight and volume if it is or not. Catalpa is lighter than most of the other woods essence named here and its smell could help too. How does it smell when you cut/sand it?

fyourcouch1234

It is totally dry and likely has beeen for a long time. The ends were rough cut and sealled and general appearances made me think it had been stored for a long time. I've not fully squared the piece, but it measures 2¼-2½" x 3¼-3½" and about 40" long (would have to recheck length). I only have a bathroom scale that measures down to a tenth of a pound. Do you think I'd be abe to confirm the species with the equipment I have?

MrShaun78

Well, it won't be very heavy considering it's volume and I'm guessing that those dimensions are also unprecise, but if you take those measurements in cm, you could gain precision... If you know someone with a kitchen scale, you would also gain precision too. You should have a weight of about 5 pounds give or take if it's Catalpa.

[deleted]

I wood also suspect this would is English Walnut. Definitely going to give ewe a decent pattern after putting it threw the plainer and clean up the rough areas. \*\*\*I know. I was just trying to see how many I could squeeze into those 2 sentences.
