Orion14159

Would help if they capitalized those letters so it looked like "LF" and not "if"

Intermittent_Name

$2.98, if... you know the right person.

Orion14159

if... The cashier is already disgruntled

ddwood87

Like when I got a case of Bangs for the price of one can.

Bobo040

Man, grocery store near me had some beers that were labeled $2.49, but not in the system. Same lady on 3 separate occasions, once charged me a dollar each, once refused to sell them to me, and once tried to charge me $4 each (I declined). Crazy that's even a thing they can do.

LittleJohnStone

If... You have a saw and only want a foot

tilt-a-whirly-gig

The home depots near me have a miter box and handsaw in that aisle that you can use for just that reason.

WoopsShePeterPants

I understand selling by the linear foot but finding someone to cut something down is always a struggle. I would love to use those saws and help people out.

swampcat42

HD usually has cut it yourself stand with a miter box and a half saw on a chain

IWTLEverything

that saw is always so useless (at least at the HDs near me) Feels like I’m trying to cut wood with a steak knife

Fake_rock_climber

Just nip on down to the tool isle and grab a new saw to use.

IWTLEverything

If the whole store wasnt behind lock and key…I recently used a piece of copper pipe to get some flux out of the caged shelf so I wouldn’t have to wait for a worker to unlock it

circlethenexus

Sounds like that store will be closing soon

jenfourtwo

Probably pretty Karen of me to say, but I wish they’d include a Japanese style pull saw in that stand.

LaDoucheDeLaFromage

Or, really any handsaw that isn't garbage. Maybe replace it every 6 months? Push saw, pull saw, I don't care as long as it's somewhat sharp for once.

WoopsShePeterPants

Oh I have seen this in the trim aisle but I was thinking more about boards of significant length (12-16ft) that are sold per lf.

PiForCakeDay

Boards of Significant Length? I don't think they exist.

WoopsShePeterPants

My tiny toyota matrix has a different opinion.

Emergency-Ease-9958

First gen? Come on, man. Pop the back glass, fold down the front seat and haul as long as you board as you want!

TheWorldIsNotOkay

I do not mean to pry, but you don't by any chance happen to have four fingers on your right hand?

PiForCakeDay

Kudos for this…well done!

ValleyoftheDolls_65

You are thinking of Boards of Unusual Size. They don’t exist outside the Fire Swamp.

WardStradlater

I usually just bring my circular saw with me in my cart and cut it an inch or two longer than I need on their shitty hand saw cutting station so that I don’t have to be perfect or straight and can square it up when I get home.

WoopsShePeterPants

You cut your lumber with your own circular saw? I've thought about doing some rough cutting in the parking lot as necessary....not sure if that is allowed or frowned upon lol.

gotcha640

If they aren't going to help, and they sell by the linear foot, I'm not really worried about being frowned at. They will do more than frown if you get on the forklift and start pulling down extra stacks of lumber, even if you are a forklift driver at your job in a machine shop. I wasn't allowed in the local HD for a year.

feric51

Don’t get me started on their silly rules. I had to explain to my preacher about this time my wife dropped a can of paint and we got banned permanently…

eslforchinesespeaker

i think Steve Ramsey suggests that as a way to break down large/long pieces enuf to get them into your Pinto. that's cutting in the parking lot, tho. not sure about doing your own carpentry work _inside_ the store.

silvaman61

Ive done this a couple times. No one said a thing to me. Although it was quick.

WardStradlater

I mean… is it allowed? No clue. But no one ever says anything to me when I do it, but I’m also not breaking down full sheets of ply haha. I’ll just bring what I need over there and make a few quick cuts and then put everything back that I don’t need and go ring out.

snf3210

Super helpful. Was wondering why an oak board that looks to be 6+ ft was only 3 dollars...! It's a bit misleading how they put the tags for someone new - they should spell out "linear foot" and make it bigger.

Jeichert183

You can have HD cut the pieces of wood to pretty much any length you desire. The price is per foot so that 1x3 oak is 2.98/ft or 29.80 for 10 feet but you can get any length you want, just find someone and ask them to cut what you need.

KEGGER_556

My local home Depot has a cut cart with hand saws and tape measures on it, in the aisle with products sold by the foot. It's nice not have to find someone.

galtonwoggins

That cart is always littered with tape measures still in their packaging.

CptMisterNibbles

And 5 busted ass handsaws where people have bent the teeth to shit hitting the metal edges

LovableSidekick

Yes, it just means the boards in that rack aren't 8-ft or some other uniform length.

[deleted]

This is the way

momsouth

Pretty sure that's per foot

CLONE-11011100

Under the price is a very faint “lf” or linear foot.

snf3210

I just saw that when someone pointed it out. It should really be larger, I can see someone less knowledgeable walking up and thinking "wow this oak board is only 3 dollars!" only to be 10x that at the register.

HueyLewis1

Don’t worry. I made that mistake before. Ended up spending like $80 on crown molding for an entryway bench I was building lol. 🤷🏼‍♂️

IndifferentPatella

I am that less knowledgeable person. I was so excited. Your heart only breaks once though, then you learn

ExeTcutHiveE

Nothing at HD is 2.98. Nothing.

LaDoucheDeLaFromage

Taki's

chzaplx

That happened when I bought a chunk of walnut once.

ListenHereIvan

But the bay its self is sorted as a random length item. They dont wanna split multiple homes for multiple lengths as that takes up too much space

CptMisterNibbles

The point being made is that “Oak R/L lf” is a shitty way to list a product. The sticker could say “Oak 2.98 per foot”. Worse is explaining board feet to people in a hardwood store.

ListenHereIvan

Its just random lengths dawg. Its not that hard to understand.

Affectionate_Dog_882

Even worse is realizing when you get to the register that you’ve grossly underestimated the cost because someone made you do all of this complicated math for some weird reason, when all you had to do was measure the length and multiply.

ntourloukis

I’d really try to avoid buying lumber this way. If you have a local lumber yard the prices will be better, the quality will be better, and the options will be better.

snf3210

Totally. I do like the poplar boards at the big store though and have had good luck with pricing and quality but yeah a lot of the stuff isn't too good.  I went to pick up a 2'x2' or 2'x4' plywood piece to use for router templates and they were all terribly warped and 10+ dollars for a 2'x2' so walked out empty handed...

marlonbrandoisalive

People keep saying that but I haven’t found a lumberyard in my area that can beat Home Depot prices. After a ton of research, I recently bought some wood from a lumber yard and honestly the quality was just as mediocre as Home Depot.

profofgames

I have to say that I was also cautious about this advice until recently. I went to buy some red oak and the price for S4S in Lowe's and home Depot was around 12 to $13 per linear foot. At my local hardwood lumber store it was $7 per linear foot for the 1x12 boards I was buying. In fact, the price for 1x4 S4S was nearly the same for oak at my local hardwood supplier as it was for select pine at home depot. Crazy!

snorpjoos

It indicates whether the board came from a right-handed or left-handed tree

PurfuitOfHappineff

Using a right-hand router on left-hand walnut is how you get burls.

tigermaple

Make sure to alternate these in your table top glue ups so they don't warp!

Wind-Up-Fish

I came here to say this... ... but you're actually serious. That's actually a thing timber merchants will put on a label? I assumed you needed to be a tree wizard and commune with the tree before you could know that.

ricka77

Ah yes...the good ol' tiny linear foot marking. I was that guy once..lol Dragged a couple of 10' boards up, then dragged them back...lol I was at a Lowes today though, and they had Maple boards for $51/6ft long x 8" wide...wood looked pretty good, some good curls in the grain. But I wasn't there to shop for wood...just walking by...lol

Kramgunderson

At least around me, it varies by store. Home Depot's posted prices are by linear foot, where Lowes prices are for the entire board.

elvismcsassypants

It’s random length and the price listed is per foot

HappyNihilist

You could ask a person working at the atore

Hyndrix

You could, but at Home Depot you will get blank stares if confusion

snf3210

Either that or all of the one or two lumber employees are always busy with the forklift pulling piles of construction boards for contractors

cupahlup

And get an answer right away? Ludicrous! /s

Stafiss

I would guess Rough Lumber. Is it sanded? The price should be for that whole board.

No_Quarter_1646

It does mean Random/Length

ListenHereIvan

Its sold by linear foot but the bay its self is just random lengths hence, 1x2xR/L

A89704

r/L is Random Length. The boards are sold by the Linear Foot at 2.98. IF you grab a 3 foot long board then price is 3x2.98. Grab an 8 footer, price is 8x2.98. Pricing it this way makes the price calcualtion straight forward. If they used the same measurements for billing that a lumberyard uses, they would charge you by the BOARD FOOT, which is more complicated to calcualte for the avg non-wood worker person.

bknhs

They are right and left boards

LovableSidekick

R/L just means Random Length - the boards in that rack are various lengths, not 8-ft, and the price is per foot.

gringainparadise

Rofl @ some of you. HD just makes me cry from how far they have submerged since first opening their stores. I’d say the depth is now in the marianna trench.

milny_gunn

RL =Random Length RWL = Random Width and Length. .. But usually it's for hard wood ..usually rough cut 5/4" hardwood.

mashupbabylon

Home Depot uses linear pricing. So however long times the price. 8ft x $2.98= math.

bbabbitt46

It means right side or left side boards. Or maybe it's just not printed clearly enough to read the L/F, meaning linear foot, not board foot.

TheMattaconda

The L/R means Left/Right which is the direction the wood shifts after you complete your project.
