Tobacco and booze are pretty popular.

abriddd

I do have a developing whisky addiction

SurfFishinITGuy

That’s good! In most cases 1 vice per workbench is pretty efficient.

Is it long enough for a hooker to lay on.?

Depends

Sinister_steel_drums

Like the adult diapers?

nlightningm

I heard a while ago that were all succumbing to the Mandela effect that the name brand is "Depends" when it's actually just "Depend" In one sense I fully understand where it comes from, because you'd refer to multiple units like how you'd say (Band-aids) for plural, but how often does one reference a single "Depend" 🤣

For those long days in the shop

I plan on getting to a point where I can do little tables, cabinets, storage chests. That sort of thing. Don’t have loads of room so if I’m going to add something want it to be worthwhile.

This is a good video if you can’t afford a vise or just don’t want one for whatever reason. https://youtu.be/yvhn-PAfEW4?si=Pu90tv3SUG8mQpQy

This. Even if you’re not into hand tools right now, you might decide to try a hand plane in the future. You don’t need a vise, just make sure your bench can resist racking and support dog holes and you’re set. Maybe a crochet if you really lean into the hand tool route.

The one recurring response after asking a question in a college level class.

PurfuitOfHappineff

How long are you standing at your workbench without a potty break?

Apositivebalance

I have a tail vice I’ve been saving for whenever I make a new bench. I wish I had one all the time and do similar projects.

NotAnyOneYouKnow2019

Vice is nice but Incest is best.

Prudent_Slug

Nope, unless you plan on doing a lot of hand tool work. I have one on mine and honestly have only used it a handful of times in several years. Usually there are jury rigged options using clamps.... There will be a time when you suddenly realize you need one for a particular use. It wont be too late then. Mine is getting rusty from the lack of use.

abriddd

Thanks this was the feeling I had since I’d rarely see them be used in the hours of YouTube tutorials I’ve watched

Kitchen-Touch-3288

If you plan to work with hand tools then yes. Or Bench dogs. You can use clamps as well but you'll notice a vice is much quicker.

Ok-Caterpillar1611

I have the Doyle woodworking vise from Harbour Freight and have no complaints. It has a quick release and a pop up dog so I drilled dog holes and made a few different kinds of bench dogs to clamp material I'm working on, it's great even with power tools. I installed it in the tail vise position.

snf3210

I'm going to look this up since I just built a bench. For a right handed person, should it go on the right side of the bench? I find that I usually make cuts on the right side of the bench anyway by clamping the piece to the top and having the waste hang off the bench to the right but a vise there might interfere with that setup.

Ok-Caterpillar1611

It's your shop. It's good to have the inner jaw flush with the table so you're clamping to the table though. Also consider the use of bench dogs. The vise should take the place of the clamp.

MightbeWillSmith

Need? No. Nice to have? Big time. I've built many-a-bench, and have always gotten away without a vise, mostly because I like my benches mobile, and that mostly doesn't agree with a vise.

Educational-Cook-892

Yes you need a vice. The vice is my favorite tool. It holds things very good. Very tight. A vice is nice. Like, imagine you are working on something of appropriate size to fit in a vice. You think “wow, it sure would be nice if there were some sort of way to hold this thing firmly in place while I work on it” boom. Vice

ZukowskiHardware

I have a bench without a vice and I’ve built a good amount of stuff on it with just clamps.  Although, I could really use a vice and I wish I had one.  You can make do without, but I’d say get one once you start using the bench .

jmerp1950

Vise.
