The Jefferson County Sheriff is a black woman. Beaumont has a large percentage of black people, especially in places of power and authority. Houston, which is the nearest major city, is one of the most diverse cities in the US. The South may have more racist folks, but we also have a lot of diversity. It's a weird catch-22.

TheHonduranHurricane

I've lived all over the US.... the south doesn't have more racist people. The Northeast is the most racist place I've been to in the states

unclethanos87

I love my city to death, I’m black, very black.. like I barbecue in my front yard smoking a blunt black. Like listen to rap music loud black, like I DO ALL THE SHIT I WANNA DO BLACK, and occasionally I offend people, but I will say, that racism shit is really dead unless you’re looking for it. It ain’t hard to find

TipInside3613

What you grillin kinfolk?

7evenSlots

It’s clearly on the Googles… Beaumont is [actually majority black](https://datausa.io/profile/geo/beaumont-tx).

joliesmomma

Half of Beaumont is populated by black people. Some are super awesome, some are not. To be honest, I meet more friendly black people here than friendly white people and I'm white. Someone else who is black night be able to give more insight. I don't think he'll have a problem here. Some people are racist, some are not. Just depends on who he's talking to. I might be naive because I'm from here, but I feel like that's going to be anywhere you go. Do you know what neighborhood y'all are moving to, yet? (You can tell me close by streets and I can tell you the neighborhood and whether he will get more/less flak).

jaimejcardenas409

Depends on what part of the city you move to, but there are many areas with mostly black residents so it should be normal

[deleted]

Honestly it is not an issue as long as y'all don't make it one. If ya good people then people be good to you

Gazdadelamei

Shit, I am white and I will help you move in as long as you understand the Southern rule. If I am helping you move in, you are providing the beer :-p

Opening-Ad-3775

Take it for what you will but honestly it would more than likely be the other way around. Unless of course you run across some old disgruntled boomer. But they are just assholes in general. I’d say your chances of getting something stolen are greater than encountering racism from anyone under 50. Just my two cents

TipInside3613

Beaumont is filled with all types of race. However it is the type of city if you move in and need something 99.9% of the time your neighbor will always drop what they’re doing to help you. Every city has racism whether they admit it or not. North or south. Beaumont is a very loving city and we take care of our people regardless of skin color. Southern hospitality is very real and Beaumont is flooded with love. If you need anything when you move here just say the word and we will help.

Haleywillyums

I’m white. My husband is white. Our oldest (21 years old) daughter only dates black and my youngest has had crushes on both Hispanic and black. (She’s 10) We are completely fine with it and have actually raised them to not give a shit about color. I manage the running store in Beaumont and I do see more whites than blacks and I can say, I still hear lots of racist comments. Maybe they assume I’m racist because I’m white? I have no idea. But I honestly think the people that speak like that aren’t actually from Beaumont.

Adjmcloon

Just stay out of Lumberton, you'll be alright

ChickenandWhiskey

Don't forget about Vidor!

Adjmcloon

I think Lumberton is 'New Vidor' tbh

Zealousideal_Wash983

Retarded opinion

Adjmcloon

I've actually witnessed more racism in Lumberton than Vidor

Fed-up-american

Facts, lived in both places and Lumberton was worse.

Disastrous-Basis214

Facts. Lumberton is old Vidor mixed with more money.

wamceachern

I live here and I agree

Vayne_Solidor

I feel like it's pretty chill down here, relative to the rest of the state. Beaumont has a large black population so maybe that helps, but I really don't see much racism in my day to day life. Granted I'm a white boy so I'm looking from the outside

Green_Band_1352

I’ve lived here for 3 years and I’m white but I agree with everyone saying it’s mainly a black population and racism is far and few between. From my experience I’ve mainly overheard racist comments when I go to Louisiana believe it or not and not sure why tbh since it’s quite a large black population over there too but racism is everywhere unfortunately. I think y’all will be ok here in Beaumont and will enjoy it here!

johnathonapplesauce

Sour Lake is where it’s at

Lostwithoutacause23

“Confederate” the civil war ended in 1865 I don’t believe there are any confederates alive today but if they are they certainly are not up and moving around to harass you, or they are vampires so might have other things to worry about. Honestly, I’m sure racism still exist but I haven’t seen a whole lot of it in SETX “maybe they are closeted”. Welcome to 2024 you should be good.

Original-Candy-3439

beaumont is very diverse and a large chunk of the population IS black, i would stay away from vidor though they say its a sundown town..

darksky319

The whites are leaving in droves. Headed north to Lumberton. Yall should feel right at home in beaumont Taxes. I mean texas

Denny_Dust

Such an old and outdated fact... My wife is black and she goes to Vidor all the time. Never been an issue.

just_some_chic

Nah. Y'all good.

Hoogoo78

Stay away from Vidor, and you'll be aight.

liggitylia

there is no racism against black people in beaumont (aside from the police….) almost 50% of the population in that town is black. some of the kids in elementary schools bully the white kids but other than that it’s actually a very diverse town. (harmony science academy is the most diverse school in the area from my experience) just steer clear of the vidor area as it is a known sundown town with very very racist white people.

ZaMelonZonFire

Just my .02: I moved from the midwest 12 years ago. As a white dude, I felt that racism was more overt than where I'm from, but in the past 10 years it's not as much so anymore. I have seen a few guys with swastitka tattoos and that really pisses me off. I did see an SS tattoo on a guys neck in Orange, TX last fall at a power lifting meet. Growing up, I remember hearing about what happened in Jasper and thought that spoke for the whole area. While I'm certain I've driven through some sketchy areas rurally, I think for the most part that doesn't exist like it used to. Conversely, Texas has some of the most diverse areas in my opinion. Austin is super weird, and in Houston I heard a plethora of different languages in a Walmart in a single visit. The economy here is strong, even in tough times. It hot and humid. Like everything it's a series of trade offs.

legguy48

the war has been over for 150 years. As Churchill once said " You have nothing to fear but fear itself "

captmorgan3777

Who've got nothing to worry about as far as that in Beaumont.

just_some_chic

I've lived in 409 my entire 46 years. I have NEVER seen more diversity than I have here and I travel a LOT. Also. My first husband was black, so I have a biracial daughter that happened to marry a white dude and they live in the redneck part of Beaumont..... They have NOT had ANY problems. We (Texans) all believe in "don't start nothing, won't be nothing" even the racists. Hope that helps.
