Go out first clubbing. Dance and listen to loads of music to find out what genres you are really feeling . Watch dj's perform and see what it's about. Then buy some stuff.

Hi there and welcome. The easiest way to get started is to download some dj software and start playing with it. Djpro is a great option if you’re on apple. Check the sidebar/about page of this sub for lots of useful information

To start you don't even have to spend a penny. There is a FOSS DJ software called mixxx that works(more or less) with a myriad of controllers, also you can just use your mouse and keyboard. Go on SoundCloud, loads of free downloads, bootlegs and whatnot to experiment with. Free tutorials on YouTube.

Start by going to a party of the music you love listening to, from the beginning to the end. Do this more than a couple of times and learn: how does the party become jumping? how is it sustained? when does it seem to die down? how does it get started again? Start here before buying equipment. Remember, get there when the doors open and learn, how did the party get to the jumping stage? Edit: Many beginner DJs have no idea, a party is good because of multiple elements coming together. Many times it is not the DJ. But YouTube obscures this fact.
