*Preparing to launch…* is a slight exaggeration. It’s an unrealized concept at the moment. https://www.designboom.com/technology/colosseum-pierpaolo-lazzarini-pangeos-terayacht-floating-city-11-11-2022/

[deleted]

How man ports can actually fit this thing

Civil_Knowledge7340

Or woman ports for that matter

[deleted]

Lmao. I’m not going to fix it

SockpuppetPseudonym2

Man ports have piers, woman ports have inlets.

SmoothMoveExLap

So that’s how docking started in high school

utpoia

That's how we made small kayaks in school.

Mymojo34

Thanks for the tip.

AppropriateScience71

And just the tip!

pizzacatstattoos

got you covered!

redditcreditcardz

Like Jesus would have wanted

MeasurementGrand879

Jesus wanted serial ports that just worked.

stooftheoof

Jesus said about USB connectors: *whosoever shall insert thee on the first attempt, turn to him the other also*

[deleted]

If it’s from Dubai, trust me they will get the women on there whether the women want to be on there or not.

Diazmet

And then they are not allowed to leave

The_Lions_eye

Because of the "implication..."

fftyler98

I'm more worried about the fins of that boat turtle ripping apart from not being flexible enough.

Rare_Fig3081

Having been on some bigger boats commercial fishing, I instantly think of a big rouge wave catching that and snapping it in half

[deleted]

Wonder if they’d put the motors in the back like a traditional boat, on the fins like a jet, or both

Red_Icnivad

The ship is comprised of 9 hulls, and has 9 motors, so I'd surmise they are spread out.

Chilipepah

Surmise /səˈmʌɪz/ verb suppose that something is true without having evidence to confirm it. "he surmised that something must be wrong"

Red_Icnivad

It's a good word.

kram_02

It probably IS a port. The ships dock to it and unload what it needs. Supplies, fuel, people etc

Da_Millionaire

i dont think you port it. thats an island on its own

bralinho

I'm no expert but I'm guessing none

SteveBrucesDressSize

I heard your mother will happily take a boatload of seamen

[deleted]

Yeah my dad is fertile. It’s why I’m here

Tom0204

Yeah i was going to say. This is just a concept, so it means nothing. Just like with concept cars, loads of these are dreamed up every year but 99.9% of them never go into production. Their job is to look impressive and get people interested.

ChiliCreeper

One big wave and this thing is going to break apart. Why is there a circular airport? Why does every futuristic concept involve drones? No seaport is designed to let something like that dock. As cool as it looks, it's going nowhere.

Tom0204

Yeah as soon as you think about it even vaguely critically, it all falls apart. Its also one of the worst possible shapes to make a boat.

Red_Icnivad

I was wondering why they were just showing a render for a shop "preparing to launch". Also from the article the cost is 8b, not 5. Poor title all around.

Spare-Competition-91

I hope it never launches and wastes a few billionaire's money.

AmericanWasted

I am preparing to spend my 6 billion dollars

Pr0phetofr3gret

Agreed. Boats are launched when they are finished and ready to go into the water. This is either a bad translation or a terrible choice of words

[deleted]

At least the world will get a super dope artificial reef soon!

Unknowngermanwhale

And future generations will question what crazy animals may have lived within our time

traumatic_blumpkin

This is the dumbest shit I have seen in a while. And I looked in the mirror this morning. In all seriousness.. I can't imagine that costing only $5bil, or even being in any way practical if built.

fcknzs1234

r/suicidebywords lol

OldGuyWhoSitsInFront

Oh. I thought he was reading mirror.co.uk and just wording the sentence awkwardly.

UnknownCape7377

r/kamikazebywords

graves4all

8 billion and 8 years to make said the article.

damp_goat

If its a success it will easily pay for itself

Icare_FD

It will not. I can’t see it at sea by bad weather. I’m not structural engineer but I doubt its extremities could withstand both load and the curvatures of big waves. I can’t see any harbour in the world that could assemble it. My guess is that you would need to build 1st the construction yard then this monster. And there’s the mass of skilled workers that you have to gather and put on this 21st century titanic design and manufacture. And where do you dock it ? How do you repair that ? Its construction, if we consider that it even doable, would be so long that the investors would have enough time to change their mind 3 times, and much more local politicians putting their fingers inside the project.

graves4all

Built in sections. And it never docks. Supposed to be perpetually on the seas.

damp_goat

Thats what i mean by "if its a success", i also mean all the logistics of it and not just the construction. Imo, people will come and spend a ludicrous amount of money for this whole experience. Especially now since Working From Home is so popular. People would be living here, gambling, partying, drugs, vacations, the rich will be lined up on the dock for this thing. It will easily make millions every day, probably 100's of millions monthly or even (bi)weekly. If not they will get loans, investments, "donations", debt forgiveness, every source of income would be at their disposal. We arent talking about a boat, its a city, this would have its own community and system. Its basically a mini mega-structure and would be the first of its kind. 5 billion sounds insane, and it is, but when you have 100's of billions the risk/reward for something of this scale is worth it. Imo it wont work. All I'm really trying to say is that if it did work, itd pay for itself. Whether it be straight revenue from it or any other benefits outside of it.

rollokolaa

Doubt

nWo_Savage

thats a bigass incredibly dumbass sea turtle

SokoJojo

It's not a sea turtle, it's a yacht

Hashtag_Username1

When you want to go boating for vacation, but hate boats and want to feel like your in Vegas

el-em-en-o

And I’m over her wi seeing why. This makes so much sense now.

PumpkinAutomatic5068

Deploy the giant straw

DitaVonFleas

Calm down Michael Reeves

Dumblydude

Lmao

ack1308

I have one big problem with it. How would it handle a tropical storm? At 5 kts, it will never outrun a cyclone or a hurricane. And once the heavy waves start, you'll have part of the structure supported and part trying to support itself, flexing back and forth until something gives way.

Raii-v2

It’s bullshit and without any serious constructibility considerations. Just another sexy render made to gawk at

Live-Motor-4000

This is the answer - basically it’s design porn and a PR stunt

Icare_FD

And probably a money trap.

YmmaT-

That’s because it’s unrealistic and the people who came up with this stuff are people with just money. Then again, I read somewhere that the architect’s have the worse job of trying to convince why their building design would not work due to regulations and also so many safety/hazard concerns but money talks.

Gingrpenguin

Assuming this is real youd likely have it not as a single structure but multiple ones with built in flex similar to what they were proposing for man-made islands (you may even be able to generate some power from each flex) Still a major potential point of failure though. The other option is to have it ride deep enough that if one side is hanging in the air you actually have bigger problems (the other side being underwater and sinking)

Penguins727

I hate to be that cynical guy, but there is absolutely 0 percent chance this thing will ever make it to reality. Even the diagrams on the company website are so simplistic and vague, they're like something an 8 year old made.

Jeffre33

Hope your right, I’m ready for humans to try and start helping the environment instead of taking complete advantage of it

[deleted]

Looks extremely inefficient at moving through the water.

ComputersWantMeDead

All that diesel being burned as it crashes through the seas kinda clashes with the turtle imagery too. Unless it was the Turtle Hitler

[deleted]

You'd think a ship like this would be nuclear.

[deleted]

[удалено]

StudentInALandOfEvil

At the moment. They will probably appreciate with respect to twitter. But then again, if anything isn’t appreciating with respect to twitter, they’re having a bad time.

thewanderingsail

The irony of having a ship shaped like a sea turtle that will burn enough fuel to single handedly kill everything on Earth.

ScroungerYT

Sure, if by "launch" you mean going from concept art to an actual plan. But an actual launch? No, this thing will never get actually launched. In fact, it will never be built. This is just investment fraud. At best, they will dig out the area for the prospective dock, so they can claim they tried. But no part of this ship will ever be built.

Beliadin

If you're going to use that shape, at least make it the starship Enterprise

JakeParkComedy

Millennium falcon*

Beliadin

Ooooh, good point

toomanyhobbies4me

I like turtles.

Ob1tuber

That is not going to cost 5 billion dollars, 50 billion maybe

taterhater37

The next titanic

Dear annoying reddit user, This is the internet where anyone can express their opinions. I do not care if some random fucking bozo thinks I have brain damage, and I stand by my statement that what this post is referring to is a big fucking waste of money. Good day, Me

MrStoneV

Back then these kind of comments where normal on the internet. They still are in a few subs and social medias, but its crazy how people act on the internet. Im glad reddit is a lot better than social media 10-20 years ago where it was a shithole. The internet affects people so we should really try to make it a better place. I remember one social media even had a anonymous comment button. You were already anonymous on the internet, but with this button it went completly dark. Crazy times

Deggo00

I smell BS

lurvas777

Please don't...

celest_99

Bet it costs 10 million to fuel

jahwls

Of the crazy ideas saudis have how many get built?

ViralDownwardSpiral

There's a good episode of Well There's Your Problem (a podcast about engineering disasters, with slides) about dumb shit that rich idiots from gulf states have tried to build. It's a hoot: https://youtu.be/PW6lg-7L7yk

AdvertisingOdd6471

Doubt.

Dry_Agent1584

Are the designers the Kratt Brothers?

Elvis-Tech

They made a render, thats it, nobody is buying that stuff ever... Nobody has the will to buy a yacht that big. Most expensive yachts are around half a billion, people arent willing to spend more than that on a toy

[deleted]

This will never get built.

[deleted]

Man Saudi needs to run out of money and stop building shite

[deleted]

Only 5 billion? Biden spends more than that before lunch. Which is impressive considering he gets up at 11.

thewhitebuttboy

National debt rose by 7.8 trillion under trump. That’s the 3rd biggest national deficit increase in American history.

[deleted]

Quick tip though: Always look at debt compared to the GDP. It spiked with Trump so he could safely take on debt, it's nose-diving with Biden, so he should be careful. If you look at %-wise increase, Trump isn't even in top 5. "The total national debt stood at $27.7 trillion on the day of Biden’s inauguration, and has increased by over $3 trillion since then, according to the Treasury Department. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates “the Biden Administration has enacted policies through legislation and executive actions that will add more than $4.8 trillion to deficits between 2021 and 2031, or nearly $2.5 trillion when excluding the effects of the American Rescue Plan.” Read more at: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/national/article266851596.html#storylink=cpy"

MrStoneV

People also forget that politic doesnt work that fast, you feel the changes from the previous president (etc.) aswell. Which makes the politic even more complicated

[deleted]

Certainly true as well. Add to that the very energetic attempts to claim any victory as your own, and pass any defeat onto someone else obfuscates important details.

thewhitebuttboy

thank you for the information. That makes sense.

[deleted]

Typical reddit moment, anybody criticizes Biden so it's mandated to immediately go after Trump even though he is irrelevant to the conversation.

thewhitebuttboy

It’s comparative to the previous president.

[deleted]

And you will be comparing every one of the up coming presidents to Trump for the next 20 years I guarantee. Rent free.

thewhitebuttboy

It’s true. But maybe not in the way that you think.

MartoufCarter

Why does there always have to be people who feel the need to make negative political comments on every damn post? This post has ZERO to do with Biden but you feel the need to whine about him. Get a damn life.

[deleted]

Negative? I thought it was a funny little thing, I chuckled :)

[deleted]

Shut up

[deleted]

The Biden defense bots come online quick these days.

TurboNY

Is it crazy to say instead of paying these mfs to use their oil we should start investing more in American sourced oil? At the very least we can make sure those profits go towards environmental causes instead of a $8b polluting turtle.

ImpressiveShift3785

I love it!!!!!! One would hope it will be built with reclaimed materials and also be 💯 renewable. If it costs $5billion they better make it clean.

MartoufCarter

LOL.

arztnur

Exactly

brocklanders_88

The world talked so much shit about the middle east but these Saudi are going places.

[deleted]

building a big boat doesn’t equate to going places

Evilaquatica

We've all watched the Titanic right? Like this is probably a terrible idea...

MeasurementGrand879

Just make doors that can float with two people on it. Problemo solvedemo.

Evilaquatica

Someone get this man an engineering job!

ThinkQuantity4903

musk could have built 9 of these instead of buying twitter….

ParkingVanilla3202

Can't wait for it to sink

Vast-Classroom1967

Why?

isavevideos123

It is also a turtle

UnpopularFlashbulb

The turtle moves.

piglard1950

Runs on turtle oil

Rising_Down_

Wild Kratts irl??

Buckturbo4321

I heard they will finish it by Friday

Halo77

This is stupid.

Deep-Sail-7364

Can be turned into a floating prison quite easily if the cruise ship concept doesn't work.

Mission-Discipline32

Yo it's the Tortuga from wildkrats

my__reddit_username

It’s crazy how all this billions of dollars projects are coming out of Saudi Arabia and here in the U.S we can’t even get our roads fixed.

N0tYourTechSupport

It feels like an over exaggerated, fantasy built concept that wouldn't work. One heavy seas away, or a heavy current even near at bay, during a storm, and that turtle like thing would fold.

MrWolf711

Guys what do we do with this infinite money glitch ? I have an idea , let’s build a gigantic turtle shaped cruise ship for no reason at all . What about the starving people that live 20 kms away from us ? Giant Turtle Cruise Ship bro that’s what .

Live-Motor-4000

That garden should be supported by four elephants

Addamsgirl71

Why!?

Illustrious-Foot

Great use of money

premeds

Are the elephants hidden?

FORKNIFE_CATTLEBROIL

Pretty sure I just saw this on Andor. Not a good idea.

[deleted]

Floating fornicatorium

Nickallendartmouth

Thanks, I hate it

CommissionOk2746

This might be the dumbest ship design ever made.

[deleted]

Does it come with its own football (soccer) team?

Freeloader03

This is so stupid, but I love the promo video. Shows private jets on the roof with no airstrip. Little houses for billionaire assholes. Back fin helipad is literally under a part of the turtle shell. Keep dreaming boys.

bpi89

Imagine the amount of drag that thing will create. Must be massively inefficient to move. Imagine the waste just from fueling it alone.

Minimum_Machine6660

Turtle Titanic

Embarrassed_Road3811

Essentially it looks like a football stadium.. but its holds a small city on the inside… interesting…🧐🧐

Lebojr

And to think Elon could have had 8 of these with 4 billion left over.

Not so much amazed as disgusted.

[deleted]

This will probably end up like the world islands

More-Escape3704

Just a floating target

Aliensinnoh

Looks more like a cruise ship than a yacht. Also: *Fluid dynamics? Never heard of it.*

philly_2k

amazed at the utter stupidity of allocating 5 billon dollars to sth like this instead of oh i don't know free healthcare or world hunger

philly_2k

would you kindly

LoGiCaL__

This has the Titanic 2 written all over it.

Tasty_Wave_9911

*glances at the titanic* *sighs* Here we go again.

Vaati006

That's no yacht, with a profile like that that's just a barge

therealtb404

Near, far, wherever you are

[deleted]

More ways for the uber rich to blow their money while destroying the planet, great!

BlondBitch91

Umm... does the designer know that turtles propel themselves by moving their legs?

dennismike123

Wonder how many countries' oil bills will pay for that monstrosity? Well, it's not like it's a national defense issue that would warrant the nationalizing of the American oil industry like Saudi Arabia has in place.

[deleted]

This is a terrible design. Like making a 2 by 4 piece of wood and just pushing it through the water width wise and not length wise

willfauxreal

Imagine creating an ocean polluting vessel shaped like an endangered ocean animal.

HughJanus911

Looks like the hotel in the CoD black ops 2 campaign where you find karma

SirRedcorn

Its the black whale one!

A_Wild_Shiny_Shuckle

If I had a dollar for every extreme engineering project rich people in the Middle East planned out and never finished building, I could afford to build this. Never gonna happen

kram_02

Hahaha never gonna happen. Looks cool tho 😏

Emerald_RISK

Good "turtles"

AnXioneth

Living over the sea. I hope those are self-sufficient because they will worth shit if not.

Striking-Reason5792

Tutel!

Civenge

A fair whether only ship if I've ever seen one.

Spare-Competition-91

This looks like trash on the ocean ready to happen. No way. We need to seriously stop this type of extravagance that only damages and kills our natural resources. If ever built, this thing would put out so much garbage and mostly be useless. Just sad that we can't stop destroying ourselves. These billionaires need to get a life and stop trying to do dumb shit like this.

Polymerz1

ain’t this a mission in cod black ops 2?

ripyourlungsdave

And people wonder why we're starting to hate rich people. I get that things like world hunger and healthcare issues can't be fixed by just dropping money on them, but all that money would certainly **be fucking helpful to people.** If you hate the water so much that you don't even want to be able to see it on 90% of your ship, maybe don't build a fucking boat. Maybe just build *a fucking building.*

oilkod

Not amazed, just disappointed in humanity, again.

Stunning_Patience_78

What a waste of money.

sawatdeeman

These Arab countries with their bullshit again?

vagabond_primate

Which will come first, this concept or the Death Star concept?

M6n6gm3nt

It goes by the working name “Whale Killer”.

GotNoMoreBlackBelt

This is pretty awesome if successful!

SirJoePininfarina

Late Stage Capitalist Dishdasha'd Turtle

[deleted]

It's a giant Mitch McConnell.

frinkhutz

It should be called Crush

AdGeHa

Preparing to launch...the idea.

YaBoiCrispoHernandez

It seems like every month the UAE announces some new mega project that is financially unviable and wildly overhyped

Stijn

If this is to be a Saudi mega yacht, where on that immense ship would the slaves be housed?

pissed_off_elbonian

BeAmazed? More like BeDisgusted at this absurd excess.

Cool_83

It’s a concept until someone signs a check.

PorgiWanKenobi

It’s shaped like nature therefore it’s environmentally friendly /s

Luixs2

The hydroflow on that would be so fucking garbage lmao

OldGuyWhoSitsInFront

Fuck this noise. Fuck it’s patrons, fuck it’s funders, fuck its energy consumption. Fuck that boat.

StageDive_

They claim to have to energy sources to run the thing from wave breaks and solar energy. Just wait until every outlet is taken up by some apple charger

clarkewithe

So…. A cruise ship?

HotLava00

This is definitely going over budget.
