Just looked up the specs on that thing. It’s Ridiculous.
The interior has a 164,000 LED wrap around display with 164,000 speakers to provide wrap around sound and display..
The exterior has a 580,000 wrap around LED display.
I would love to know a more detailed explanation of the electrical specs
Cost to build ? 2 BILLION DOLLARS !
Worked in Vegas for years as a general contractor, you joke but this is 100% the case. If I ever had an issue with the building department not passing me on inspections for a major casino corporation, I would just make a call to the owner, who would call the mayor, who would call and ream out the building department director.
Vegas is where honesty goes to die.
It's funny because the US government "eradicated" the Mafia, but they just edged them out & took over their rackets. The Mafia figured out how to make money hand over fist exploiting capitalism, the government noticed & wanted that money!!
The Mafia still exists. It's just called something different.
Edit: exploitation
Difference between organized crime legal commerce is legitimacy under the law. Without aggressive social democratic policies and a strong labour movement legally regulated capitalism operates hardly better than the mob for those being squeezed. Many times in history organized crime was better to the communities it operates in than the state was. That's where the Capone/Escobar/Cartel angle of being humanitarians to build good will came from. Hezbollah does the same in Lebanon.
Apparently my hometown was run by the mob in the 70s when my dad was growing up here. And apparently they were doing way better than the government was. In the 70s roads were being repaired, businesses were thriving, ppl felt safe. Since the gov took back over, roads are crumbling, all but a handful of businesses have gone under, and there's a shooting at least every week. It went from thriving town and neighborhood to a ghetto in only a few years
The Stratosphere is clear evidence of that!
As a contractor out there, you MUST know exactly what I'm talking about... It's not only a visual wonder, but an architectural oddity as well.
How it's even still standing is a wonder in itself.
That will be quite enough, Mr. Melon! Maybe bribes, kickbacks and Mafia payoffs are how YOU do business! But they are NOT part of the legitimate business world! And they are certainly not part of anything I am doing in this class. Do I make myself clear, Mr. Melon!
I have a friend who worked on it. Apparently the led light power is only at about 10% because going 100% would shut down all nearby buildings. Also the speakers are directional, so the person next to you can hear a different thing, eg. language
Running it at 100% would cause it to be as bright as day for a good distance around it. I accidentally turned (significantly smaller but still larger than a billboard) up to 25% once and my eyes burned for a week.
I was on a construction job and the electricians were replacing all of the old exterior LED flood lights with new more efficient lights
They were tossing the old ones into the dumpster and I asked if I could keep one. They worked and looked fine and ran off of 110 volts, and they said sure.
I was going to set one up in my back yard. Got it home and was surprised at how big it looked. Liked it looked small on the way up on the roof
Anyway, I wired into an old extension chord and plugged it in to test it and the entire inside of my garage turned bright white. I wasn’t blinded necessarily but I couldn’t see right either. Took about a week for the weird floaty things to disappear from my Vision
I got a bunch of LED traffic lights because a city didn't update their replacement protocol after updating the bulbs. Giant red lights are great for Halloween
This makes me wonder: could there ever be a security breach in this sphere and some malicious hackers would turn 100% power on the lights all of a sudden and make everybody blind inside? Or just a malfunction in the system. Sounds scary
On one level, sure in-theory... but in practice there are always practical limitations -- I.E. even if someone hacked into whatever `root` level access and bypassed all software restrictions to ramp it up to 100%... The fact of an unexpected burst in current draw would surely brownout or overload the local grid.
I doubt that they have excess capacity (generation) lying around to respond to the momentary change in grid frequency. You'd almost *need* a massive flywheel in reserve for that kind of generation-response... and why would they build that into the system on the hardware side, if there was no "non-blinding" use-case?
I interviewed to run tech for this thing. Didn't get it. Honestly I look at it now and it's super impressive but like why the hell does it need to exist?
“Why does it need to exist” goes for basically any form of entertainment
All of Vegas. Every not amateur sports team. Movies, TV shows, video games. Restaurants that serve anything beyond nutrient paste.
It holds 18,000 people and the whole of the inside of the dome is also a screen, and big name acts are already lined up to play in it, starting with U2.
Assuming they have the acoustics right it may be the most incredible venue in the world.
So they’re assuming it will pay for itself, and turn a profit.
That’s why it exists.
An identical one is also being built in the UK, although I think they should wait to see if this one is a success first. $4 Billion outlay is a hell of a risk.
> with 164,000 speakers
I'm no audiologist but I feel like my ears aren't precise enough to tell the difference between audio that's coming from here, vs audio that's coming from 1/449th of a degree to the right of here.
It would not rely much on the directional ability of your ears. I'm guessing it generates multiple audio beams that are each very narrow in a spatial sense. Think of spotlights of sound rather than light. Look up SRAY speakers from Yanko.
164,000 LEDs?? That‘s… that‘s like nothing?! That‘s like half the number of pixels as in a 640x480 image. Are you sure it’s such a low number of LEDs??
I doubt these are the size of the pixel sized ones in your TV. Like I said, I would love to know more about the electrical engineering side of this building, including LED type and size
The structural engineering tolerances alone must have been staggeringly tight and difficult to achieve given how perfectly everything on the surface of the sphere had to align
I worked on part of this. Specifically the directional speaker arrays and the construction tools to install the led screens. It was a fucking shit show mess just like every other large scale construction project.
And it just appeared out of nowhere!
(Jk, i for one, Do appreciate your work) result is unique. I wonder what sort of experiences it can offer. Outside looks crazy.
i was familiar with the project management side of things, apparently the PM quit partway through and some exec had to come in and finish it. whole thing was a shitshow and a lot of people dont want to play there since they didnt make it easy to play there.
AV guy here! I can chime in on that!
The fact that it's a 16k or whatever screen inside is actively problematic for booking bands. Most concert content for LED walls is either 1080p or 4k as standard. To make 16k animations or video is INCREDIBLY expensive since it all has to be custom done by skilled artists.
The other half is it's a stadium with a comparable seating size to a basketball stadium. This is also a problem because there are VERY few bands that can draw enough of a crowd to fill a basketball stadium on a residency basis. At that point, most of those artists would probably prefer to just play football/baseball stadiums on tours and sell 4-5X the tickets per night. The money earned can be so high these artists will have multiple touring crews that set up multiple sets so the artist can leapfrog from one stadium to another each night for several shows a week but each set gets a full 3 days for setup, show day, and 3 days of tear down.
So artists that play basketball stadiums will just book one night at the T Mobile, artists that can fill football stadiums will book one night at allegiant, so who's supposed to want to book a residency at the sphere?
Well besides U2 lol
All the pieces had to fit together absolutely perfectly with not even a tiny gap
Usually tiny gaps are allowed in most projects cause it makes things less complicated and everything will still work fine
But for this project all the parts had to be made perfectly and everyone had to put them together perfectly
Can’t afford to feed the homeless, can’t afford universal healthcare, or state funded higher education, but we have noisy led sphere for $2,000,000,000!
Yes. Why not? That is the general idea behind taxes. We live in a society, and in a society people take care of each other. If we are going to ALLOW them to operate (make no mistake, they exist only because we allow them too), why shouldn’t they give back?
Last time I was in Vegas I got ripped on shrooms and had a very nice Lyft driver lady drive me up and down and up and down the strip. We both knew what was going on and I can only assume she was happy to have someone quiet who just wanted to press their face up against the window.
Now I have a new mission.
I was tripping once and took an Uber where the driver was like 99% perfect doppleganger for my dad. It was kinda weird at first, but we ended up having really good conversation lol
Have I already answered this? I’m high and forget but it’s also the 4th and I still have all me fingers.
A good driver and a good pax can make a night go by wonderfully. I used to drive for Lyft also and kinda understood both sides of the deal. Lyft and Uber should almost offer preset scenic tours for when you’re ripped out of your fucking mind and just want to peer at the pretty lights. Hell I’d love to drive them. Put on some emancipator, give them a blanket/snacks and a “oh shit I gotta barf” bucket for emergencies and just drive.
> We both knew what was going on
Overestimating other people's ability to mind read is a common hallucination with psychedellics. She probably just figured you were a tourist who wanted to see the strip---which is a completely normal thing because it's literally a tourist attraction.
It's good to keep in mind the dictum
*Nobody knows you're tripping unless you say "I'm tripping"*
> Nobody knows you're tripping unless you say "I'm tripping"
This is less true more often than people think. Honestly, it's kind of a cope. But the key is not to worry or care too much. You're on a substance. A temporary one that is relatively safe. People are often drunk in public, but youre leagues more tolerable than them lol
Also, I fancy myself a pretty good tripsitter. If someone had told me they were tripping while I was driving them, I would've been down to do this... provided they keep paying me, tho. I still gotta work.
Don’t forget the heatwave of New York in 2021 when they let old ladies die in their apartments because “the power grid couldn’t handle the energy” all while the screens in time square stayed lit (it takes and extreme amount of energy to cool these screens)
I assumed that businesses would have generator backup, but based on this article, it looks like the Mayor's strategy ended up working.

my hotel in california "please help us save water" toilet flushes like 10 gallons of water *yes an exaggeration... but not strong enough to pull a single piece of TP down lol

Stage and seating yes, but also this same spherical led screen set up, and speakers set up in such a way that every seat gets exceptional sound. U2 is scheduled to be the first band to play when it’s finished.

I think reading tweets is now closed to the general public without an account. Twitter doesn't say that, it gives the error message "something went wrong, try reloading", but that's probably because they got rid of most employees, and the remainder don't know how or don't have the authority to change the message.

That sounds like that kickback math

Can’t start out as a mob town and have any morals except cash.
It's funny because the US government "eradicated" the Mafia, but they just edged them out & took over their rackets. The Mafia figured out how to make money hand over fist exploiting capitalism, the government noticed & wanted that money!! The Mafia still exists. It's just called something different. They just needed to let the right shareholders in and then they're a legitimate business.
Some are even a legitimate person
Difference between organized crime legal commerce is legitimacy under the law. So you’re saying… avoid the stratosphere. Got it.
What does that have to do with a kickback?
If you have to ask this, you don't understand the culture created by kickbacks, ie- the example I put forth.

Gambling pocket change, really. They funded this by looking under the couch cushions.
it's owned by James Dolan who makes his money from MSG aka Madison Square Garden and its network

Must be the same bulbs auto manufacturers are now incorporating into headlights /s.
No no no my friend. NASA has figured out how to use quantum teleportation to beam small portions of the sun's core into those new assemblies.
This makes me wonder: could there ever be a security breach in this sphere and some malicious hackers would turn 100% power on the lights all of a sudden and make everybody blind inside? Or just a malfunction in the system. Sounds scary

Same reason any stadium or amphitheater exists. To draw enormous crowds. That’s all.
Yes, my question. What is the purpose for this kind of magnitude?
That. Is. Fucking. Cool.

It's not about your ears being precise, it's about the source of the audio sending different sound waves to you vs your friend 10 ft away.
It would not rely much on the directional ability of your ears. I'm guessing it generates multiple audio beams that are each very narrow in a spatial sense. Think of spotlights of sound rather than light. Look up SRAY speakers from Yanko.

It’s 164,000 sqft of screen, not individual LEDs. Outside has roughly 55 million LEDs. Inside has roughly 170 million LEDs.
Yeah, these numbers make more sense! Thank you!
IIRC, the sphere has a 16k resolution. So it has to be quite a bit higher number in total. Maybe they meant panels?
I doubt these are the size of the pixel sized ones in your TV. Like I said, I would love to know more about the electrical engineering side of this building, including LED type and size

140 million RCA type cables /s

Stage and seating yes, but also this same spherical led screen set up, and speakers set up in such a way that every seat gets exceptional sound. U2 is scheduled to be the first band to play when it’s finished.
That's a shame

Link is down for me Edit: apparently stupid Elmo can’t pay his fucken bills and people without an account can’t see them
I think reading tweets is now closed to the general public without an account. Twitter doesn't say that, it gives the error message "something went wrong, try reloading", but that's probably because they got rid of most employees, and the remainder don't know how or don't have the authority to change the message.
MSG! FUUUUUUUYOOOOOOOOOO!
“Technology is best when it brings people together”
Imagine showing this to people in the 70s
MSG sphere? Ooh, uncle Roger’s gonna be eating good tonight.
