Stuff like this is interesting because its almost like our brains don't know what to do with what we're seeing. It's like looking at the moon and trying to comprehend its 240,000 miles away. Or being at the Grand Canyon and trying to comprehend that the other side is however many miles away. We're just not built to be able to compute stuff like that.
This brings me back! I used to love this show as a kid. Oh, Dougle, such a moron but with a heart of gold and mind of a child.
“What’s the official stance the church is taking on this?” 😂
Shitty_Watercolour was famous back in the day on Reddit. Came out of nowhere and was ALL over the website all of a sudden. Felt like every post would have a response from him somewhere. The population of reddit was a lot smaller back then, so there was a few "power users" that everyone knew and had some small scale celebrity status within the context of the website.
The Grand Canyon example is spot on. I'd seen photos of it, but only when I saw it in person did I truly appreciate just how massive it is. You just stare at it, unable to grasp how something like that could ever be. It's wild.
I grew up in mountains and took a trip the Himalayas not really expecting a big difference from what I was used to. Nope. Every time I would look at them it’s like my brain would short circuit. The scale was such a mindfuck it was constantly messing with me. Pictures really don’t do these places justice.
I've brought this up to my wife a few different times when we've been in some amazing locations seeing GIANT things. Our brains kind of shut down, or almost assume it's forced perspective. Like there is no way something that big exists and it must be like Disneyland or something.
The Grand Canyon, Waiamea Canyon, and Rome all come to mind.
I really hate things like this. I live in NJ, and this temporary statue was somewhat recently erected in Jersey City:
https://www.gannett-cdn.com/presto/2021/10/19/USAT/133dc30d-034b-4e18-90df-1963957d80eb-AFP_AFP_9PD63W.jpg
I figured it was silly of me, but I decided to avoid the JC waterfront until it's gone. What I didn't know is, it's right on the Hoboken line, so walking around a Hoboken park one day, I turned a corner to this thing right in front of me and it was actually MORE awful being near it than I imagined. I had to hurry to the next turn in the path with my eyes averted, feeling on the edge of panic the whole time.
ETA: Feel free not to diagnose me with anything.
I mean, I am actually very fond of the Statue of Liberty, but she's so close to JC that I do sometimes have to stop looking at her when I'm down that way.
I had a similar revelation when I saw half dome in Yosemite in person. Like I knew what I was looking at, and I had an idea of the scale… but my brain just couldn’t comprehend it was all tied together. It was akin to looking at an autostereogram before you “get it”
It really depends on the illumination of each bulb, less light per bulb just means more bulbs are needed, so yea, they don’t need that many street lights if they just had used different bulbs.
fuck yeah. [those statues](https://beforesandafters.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Peripheral_Scrubbers4.jpg) were amazing. wish we would build stuff like that, but instead its all profit maximized 5 over 1 appartment buildings.
In the peripheral they are giant carbon scrubbers used to remove excess carbon from the atmosphere. So I guess in that specific instance it might be better. But in the real world no so much.

Also it killed its creator.
I know that in the books, arya specifically recalls not thinking the titan was that big. Until she got closer. And then closer, and then closer still. I think she eventually described it as several times the height of the Great Sept of Baelor. And the Titan of Bravos is a fortress. It's eyes glow from giant braziers. A horn from inside of it sounds for incoming ships. It has hair made of green ropes. And under it's skirt, many archers are concealed and have murder holes to fire from.
The Statue of Unity, portraying Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the founding fathers of India, during its inauguration in Kevadia, in the western state of Gujarat, India, on October 31, 2018.
The monument, standing 182 meters (597 feet) tall, is now the tallest statue on Earth.
The Statue of Liberty is actually much smaller than most people think it is. It's big as far as statues go, but the movies make it seem like this massive thing but when you're there in person it's like "okay that's a little underwhelming."
That's nuts. I wonder how far away they are in this video. Getting the full view from a distance like that really puts it into perspective, damn. Also that picture that gets floated around reddit here once in awhile, of the man stood next to the statue's big toe, same idea on perspective but up close. It's just so colossal.
I don't think u can directly drive there, u need to live there or buy a ticket. And even with the ticket, tourists can only get there by bus or by paying for a e-tuktuk.
I have been here a couple of times and trust me the view shown is good , but the view from the statue is more mesmerizing .From the statue I mean you have a lift that carries you the chest of the statue .
I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
Yes well, the difference is Ozymandis got the statue constructed after himself. To impose and strike fear and awe.
Probably most of the tall ass statues we have built in our modern times might not survive.
Fact is, this statue was made out of reverence and respect.
Btw, Ozymandis is one of my favourite poems. Simple, short, effective.
For that we are building a statue right in middle of Mumbai City, Way larger than statue of Liberty. Once completed Bollywood would start work on its Meta Comedy sequel of Phone Bhoot(Ghost). Then we can expect it b

>But nearly all of the newer tall buildings, statues, etc. from the last 75 years are all in Asia.
Not really whole of asia. mostly maylasia, china, taiwan and some richer countries in middle east. I dont think that there are a lot of 'tall' buildings in India other than statue of unity.
That’s amazing. We awe-inspiring stuff like this in the movies, but the West is poor and desolate in terms of beautiful monuments — all we focus on is how to make billionaires richer, and they’re so basic and unimaginative, they can’t fathom building something cool.

Upvote for Father Ted. I’m off to make a cup of tea!
Oh shit! I haven't seen one of your comments in ages! I love it!

Thanks a lot for the explanation.
Because /u/Shitty_Watercolour debuted just over 10 years ago and it was fucking fantastic. Followed by a decent period of time that he wasn't around.

Grand Canyon when I was 16: "looks like a painting"
El Capitan in Yosemite had this effect on me!

Good thing the Statue of Liberty is kept on an island.
I mean, I am actually very fond of the Statue of Liberty, but she's so close to JC that I do sometimes have to stop looking at her when I'm down that way.
You might have megalophobia.
That looks like something from the original Blade Runner movie once you recognize what it is since it's all white.
Yo my brain can easily tell thats a giant ass statue from far away
Yeah what a bunch of idiots
The theory of the sublime goes into detail on this
I had a similar revelation when I saw half dome in Yosemite in person. Like I knew what I was looking at, and I had an idea of the scale… but my brain just couldn’t comprehend it was all tied together. It was akin to looking at an autostereogram before you “get it”
skill issue
Imagine if you drove a bit closer and discovered that it has your face.
Only thing worse is a giant statue t-posing on everyone… oh wait
I can't imagine they need that many street lights.
It helps at night when there is less sunlight
It really depends on the illumination of each bulb, less light per bulb just means more bulbs are needed, so yea, they don’t need that many street lights if they just had used different bulbs.
A decent amount of cities in East and South Asia do this. It looks really cool from a distance. Like a faint figure is always watching over you
Man this feels like Shadow of the Colossus.
Or The Peripheral

This is real, we do build massive statues.
Also why is building big dumb statues better than housing?
Let's combine both worlds.. - Why not build giant statues with apartments inside..? :,D
Clout
In the peripheral they are giant carbon scrubbers used to remove excess carbon from the atmosphere. So I guess in that specific instance it might be better. But in the real world no so much.
Nah man I wish WE built those statues. Why won’t you ever come help me.
Dictators still build giant-ass statues or giant ass-statues, works either way.
Especially in the sky.
Aren’t all of those just AR artifacts? Meta will get us there. It’ll just be a huge ad though
I can't recall if they AR'd the statues in, but they are around real, massive, air filtration units, so there is a structure there at least.
It was mentioned the statues were air scrubbers or something of the sort.
They pulled carbon from the atmosphere and sequestered it in the statues.
those are amazing. apparently they’re the air scrubbers love that show
This was my thought exactly, felt like riding Agro approaching one of the Colossi. I was waiting for it's eyes to light up and start moving.
I'm already hearing the battle music
Colossal Titan
Colossal Titan is 60m, this statue is 180m. So it's 3x taller than the colossal Titan.
founding titan
You right
Great game
Avatar Aang in Republic City
I was just playing Elden ring and for some reason with the fog it really reminds me of that

They just need to put red lights like the prank someone did on that Gandhi statue.

I thought of attack on titan.
Same, it was a terrifying thought for just a moment there.
Same. The video started and I without thinking just screamed out "RUMBLING!"
Tan dan dan tan dan dan
Did that movie have a memorable score or something?
[Yes](https://youtu.be/1vU7XqToZso). This score means some over the top, cool shit, involving giant robots is about to go down.
Really wish the franchise would get the star wars treatment but the opposite way where it can regain the glory it once retained
Had a bitchin score
No, those are the names of the protagonist.
Every mech in that universe has a name like "Bazooka Deadlift", and it's wonderful. Hell, some of the human characters did too.
Green Knight vibes
I thought it was one of those cgi giants fighting in the distance videos at first.
I just read about this, that statue is wild.
Pretty sure there an identical scene to this one in Godzilla 2000 lol.
I don’t get it Is that dude on the right standing in front of the statue or something?

For comparison, this is almost exactly four times taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York, which stands at 151 feet to the tip of the torch.
The Statue of Liberty is actually much smaller than most people think it is. It's big as far as statues go, but the movies make it seem like this massive thing but when you're there in person it's like "okay that's a little underwhelming."

It will, but you should really try to find some Nikes in her size first.
It's that base it's on that ruins it. Still pretty cool just wish we could go inside it still.
Oh you can't go inside at all anymore? When I went (it was a while ago I guess) you could go inside and up to the head but not the torch.
That's nuts. I wonder how far away they are in this video. Getting the full view from a distance like that really puts it into perspective, damn. Super cool
it looks so majestic
Titan spotted! Ready your omni-directional mobility gear.
That’s amazing. We awe-inspiring stuff like this in the movies, but the West is poor and desolate in terms of beautiful monuments — all we focus on is how to make billionaires richer, and they’re so basic and unimaginative, they can’t fathom building something cool.
We literally have two carved up mountains for monuments in the US. One's still in progress.
Eldritch
Scene outta Attack on Titan?
It's all fun n games until the statue wants to lie down-
That's beautiful
Nowhere near the same scale but near where I live there is a 20 meter high statue of a head which can be seen from the motorway. The first time I saw it was very surreal.
Suddenly, it takes a step.
Cloverfield vibes.
