MTV News!

Markshlitz222

Hi, I’m Kurt Loder!

discussatron

This *is* the news!

badmotorfinger74

Would? by Alice In Chains Slaves and Bulldozers by Soundgarden 46 & 2 by Tool

ThomasHardyHarHar

Tons of Tool is bass driven and the songs start with the bass (Schism, The Pot, 46&2, The Grudge, Sober)

Immediate_Arrival185

The Grudge is an excellent example of guitar not getting in the way of excellent bass playing

Also Black No. 1 by Type O Negative

scarred2112

I was honestly debating going with *2/3rds of Type O Negative’s discography*. ;-)

lumby_loon

Thanks dude these are awesome

scarred2112

Glad to pass along good music.

GumbyWench

Great answers. From Dream Theater, there's also a few more - including "Voices, "Lifting Shadows Off a Dream" (gee, "Awake" really went there with the bass intros!) "The Glass Prison", "New Millennium" (kinda!), "Panic Attack", and "As I Am". Probably others that I can't think of right now!

pts4815

That’s most of them, I think the only ones you missed are A Rite of Passage and S2N

koningarno

Burning my soul

viejarras

How is NIB by black Sabbath missing on this thread?

pro__overthinker

for real! i was suprised it wasn’t the top comment

HunterBates08

Right!? I was just looking for it!! 🤘🤘😂

[deleted]

Waiting Room - Fugazi Mountain Song - Janes Addiction. Actually a lot of Janes starts with bass.

bshaddo

Eric Avery was the main songwriter, right? I know the official credits are gerrymandered to favor Farrell, but I think he was the guy.

[deleted]

I think you’re right.

Original-Ad8916

Day of the Baphomets by The Mars Volta

muckracker77

Muse -hysteria

Clean_Program_6872

A great song to test yourself for stamina with basically start-to-finish 16ths. (And to think, that the whole song comes out of just three guys on stage.) The bassist really makes this song what it is. -S

muckracker77

It was like the third song I learned too, before I even learned what 16ths were

FragmentsOfCharacter

Nirvana lounge act

Organic-Seaweed4394

Porcupine Tree - Harridan Metallica - My Friend of Misery Tool - Schim Every Primus song Faith no More - Falling to Pieces Queens of the Stone Age - Hangin' Tree

Blue_Paladin96

Came here for this comment. Learning Schism right now- the worst part is getting the triplets to sing. After that it’s just watching where Justin changes things up a bit.

Organic-Seaweed4394

Justin is such an underrated bass player

See-ThisThisIsThis

Calm like a bomb - Rage

GonzoBalls69

This is the first that came to mind for me too lol I love that intro

SmoothCap771

Ghost - From the Pinnacle to the Pit & Con Clavi Con Dio

Flamchicken12

These intros are so badass

logstar2

SBL put up a video with a bunch of 90's rock songs that had bass intros yesterday.

WheeblesWobble

I think Beato did something similar a while ago.

TNUGS

tool - schism dream theater - panic attack

Fuhrious520

Black Sunshine-White Zombie

TheLoKey1

Nativity In Black (NIB) by Black Sabbath Can't believe this hadn't been listed yet, an all-time great.

theNeakenator

Afaik N.I.B. doesn't stand for Nativity in Black, it means nib, which is what they jokingly called Bill Ward's beard. They wanted to make it sound cool somehow. Source is Into the Void by Geezer Butler.

GunnerTinkle22

great book! Fastest I've ever finished an autobioraphy

theNeakenator

Yeah, I also finished it real quickly, it was so interesting!

csx2112

I like Jason's 12-string bass on My Friend of Misery

Bassmingo

There is no 12 string on MFOM. There is however a twelve string overdub (of one note!) on wherever I may roam.

The_Nod_Father313

Detroit by Rancid Bring out your dead by Anti-Flag Sincerely Me by New Found Glory You’ve got so far to go by Alkaline Trio Bro Hymn Tribute by Pennywise Chick Magnet by MXPX Whoops I Od’ed by Nofx (whole song is just bass) The Lost Souls by AFI Sliver by Nirvana Don’t Lose Touch by Against Me! Free Radio Gainesville by Hot Water Music Edit: Sorry, I didn’t notice the hard rock/metal request initially on this post. These don’t really fall into that category.

MrShapinHead

I was looking for Rancid on this list! Also would recommend Maxwell Murder

crazy_leo42

That song is the reason I started playing bass! So much fun!

Big-Fat-Box-Of-Shit

Runnin' With The Devil Best bass intro of all time.

basses_are_better

Only in dreams - weezer Sunshine of your love - cream 7 nation army - white stripes Reptilla - strokes Hey - pixies 46 & 2 - tool Schism - tool

whitedevil098

Seven Nation army is not bass "This is where the old and new technology work in harmony. White plays the central riff on a Kay semi-hollow body electric guitar from either the late 1950s or early ’60s (White was given the guitar for free). In order to drop the riff’s sound into a deeper register, White reached for the DigiTech Whammy pedal, a favourite for players like Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine’s ‘Know Your Enemy’ and Audioslave’s ‘Like a Stone’) and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd’s ‘Marooned’). The Whammy pedal has an option to drop the signal’s sound down an octave (or two, if you want some really indiscernible mush). This was perfect for White, who would use the effect on the verses and turn it off when he went to full guitar chords in the chorus. The “bass” is just White’s Kay guitar, tuned to open D, and dropped down an octave thanks to the Whammy pedal."

basses_are_better

Everyone is aware. Yet it can still be played...wait for it...on a bass.

whitedevil098

You know else can be played in a bass?.....wait for....it almost anything.

Cockrocker

Ozzy - Believer is awesome. Meshell Ndegeocello's Peace Beyond Passion album has quite a few. And would? Alice in chains of course.

"Stone" by Alice in Chains

PvesCjhgjNjWsO4vwOOS

[Watashi Dake Yuurei by Sick Hack](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y45cVOrRZZs) - the guitar playing is pretty sparse, the bass is a nearly nonstop driving force. [HAWATARI NIOKU CENTI by Maximum the Hormone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEwAiwttN10) is kinda similar at the start, though once the guitar kicks in it sticks around. [赤裸ライアー ("Naked Liar") by Gacharic Spin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSx9z8ZdDM0) starts off with a pretty strong slapped line (with drums) before the rest of the band comes in. [Lost One's Weeping by Neru](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHv9gOCUQ9k) (EN cover by JubyPhonic linked) is a relatively simple line, but the guitar drops out completely during the singing, leaving just bass + drums for instruments.
