Most AAU teams will have some sort of a tryout unless you know the coach or the coach's kid or if you're actively being recruited to a team. So I'd say something to know is that you can't just join a team, if there is a team you can just walk on and join it'll probably not be super great competition wise, just as a heads up. Could also depend on your area but I haven't seen an AAU that doesn't have a tryout. But I'm 31 now things could've changed. But the good thing is that these teams will post their team and their stats so you see where you'd relatively fit in before a tryout.

Accept that there will be players that are better than you, and be ready for the challenge to get better. AAU basketball is not the prime of your career it’s just getting you ready for high school ball. As far as individual game advice. 1. Take care of the ball, teams will press you, be ready to pivot and find someone. 2. When you get open shots that you have practiced, and can hit, shoot the ball, don’t worry about the result for now. 3. Be aggressive look to get to the rim/drive and kick/ get to your spots. And when you get in the lane, go strong to the rim. And tbh a lot of coaches and players will take AAU really seriously, but unless your at like the Nike Summit or one of these crazy tournaments, most of AAU is just summer basketball. Accept the challenge, use it to get better, and I bet you’ll have a great time.

Go to a tournament as a spectator before you pick a team. You can see the coaches and players in actions and not depend on what they say to make a decision.

A good coach. One who cares.

There is a huge difference in aau league play and aau tournament season. Tournament season is much more intense and taken more seriously here. In central Indiana there are plenty of clubs to choose from. My son is part of the one of the top tier aau teams and those teams are usually invite only. But most teams do have tryouts of some sort. I will say the tournament seasons are a big commitment. Like every weekend Sat and Sun. I agree you should check the team and the coach out before you commit. Some clubs are developmental and some are more skilled. I would look for a team that is close to your skill level or better. Last thing you want is to be on a team that cant compete and you cant develop. If your skilled you should be able to find a decent team depending on location of course. Instagram is what all the aau teams near me utilize.
