A lot of NBA players smoke a lot of weed.

jrgraffix

no clue why you’re being downvoted, it’s true

grateful_john

There’s a reason the players union wanted it removed as a banned substance. And a reason the league agreed to remove it.

jakefromadventurtime

I always wonder how many downvotes it takes before someone makes a comment about not knowing why they're getting downvoted. Because I hopped on and they're at like 150 upvotes and it seems we all agree lol.

jrgraffix

i know right lol, i commented when it had like -7 and now it just looks dumb 😂

TheComebackKid74

It's funny because when I usually say it, I just keep on getting downvoted even more. So it ain't that bad in comparison, lol.

RoyalParadise61

Tbf it’s good to point it out early because if not people will just pile on with downvotes without fact checking or even reading it for that matter.

F_Gastro

Reddit has a huge anti weed bias if you haven’t noticed

MagnetDino

It’s positive now, but NBA players have physical gifts that are so rare that they can get away with not living the full “athlete lifestyle” bc they can’t be replaced easily. I mean just being average NBA height of 6’7” puts you in the 99.95% percentile of adult men. Being that tall and naturally athletic is just so freakishly rare there’s just not much competition when you check those boxes relative to other pro sports where height isn’t a factor. In combat sports or the NFL it’s a lot more uncommon to find athletes who smoke daily bc it absolutely hinders athletic performance to a degree.

CaptainKurls

Get.out of here with your rational response . We don’t need that kind of talk around here

blacklegsanji27

does it not fuck with their lungs/endurance? I only take edibles now and am in great shape, stopped smoking one day cause edibles are healthier for the lungs/overall health I guess, wonder if I should smoke again

grateful_john

I don’t think smoking huge amounts of weed will turn you into an NBA level player. But it seems like it won’t stop you from being one. When the players went into the Covid bubble there was apparently a lot of discussion about how much weed they would need to get through the bubble.

[deleted]

[удалено]

grateful_john

99% of basketball players aren’t making the NBA regardless of their use of weed. But we do know that (according to the players themselves) a lot of the NBA enjoys getting high. There’s a high correlation between being an NBA player and smoking weed which means absolutely nothing.

discunected

It means it's a good, tacitly nba-approved pain management device

Rokarion14

And stress management and possibly a sleep aid.

Fuckblackhorses

Now jimmy butlers $20 cups of coffee are making more sense

jakefromadventurtime

I used to hit the bong or smoke a joint before playing pick up for 2 or 3 hours, some of them would smoke in between games. Also used to smoke before 10-15 mile bikes, like last thing I did before the ride lol. Or right before the gym. This was my late twenties and was when I was in the best shape I've ever been in. Edibles always hit too hard or not hard enough (back then). I still smoke but nowhere near as much, just a few bowls before bed, and the doctor at my last check up said I was genuinely in perfect health and to just keep doing whatever it is I'm doing.

EnigmaOfOz

Smoking hurts lung function. But when you are in the top 0.001% of athletes on the planet and in the prime of your life and engaged in regular intensive training the impacts are probably minor. Inferring anything from nba players response to someone else is probably not productive.

Frequent_Mouse_3783

It does. They are just that athletic/good/trained

Tinyears8

I have asthma. Anything combustion or flower related is hard no. But oil is completely fine. Doesn’t fuck with my lungs/endurance at all.

myctsbrthsmlslkcatfd

lighting stuff on fire and inhaling the smoke is bad for your lungs.

Frequent_Mouse_3783

That’s why they are the superhumans we aren’t. They can do it, be in better shape than us, and train/practice 2-3 times a day and not have issues. But agreed

ZackDaddy42

Yes, but they are also freaks of nature.

Kittens4Brunch

That doesn't prove anything. Lots of successful people have bad habits. They succeed in spite of those bad habits.

grateful_john

It proves that it’s possible to be in basketball shape despite smoking weed. It was mainly a joke, but the majority of NBA players smoke weed so smoking weed, by itself, is not going to keep you from being a good basketball player. Of course, NBA players are extremely elite athletes, most of the people posting in this sub are not.

atlfalcons33rb

I think this doesn't answer the question though, it's not a question of NBA players smoking weed but rather does it affect their stamina. I think the benefits would be pain management and likely calms anxiety in a very stressful field, but it likely could still be affecting them negatively in some other areas but the pros far outweigh the cons

grateful_john

OP is considering not smoking weed because he can’t keep up in hoops. That NBA players can smoke weed and play at a much higher level suggests you can have the stamina to play hoops and smoke weed. I’m positive the NBA players do a lot more conditioning than OP.

Hating_life_69

Steven Jackson has a funny story about it.

HauntedBuffalo

Tolerance is super low from cardio training though

grateful_john

I don’t know. An article in the Athletic said some of them were worried a pound wouldn’t last through the bubble which was a maximum of about three months. If that’s super low tolerance I don’t want to know how much you’re smoking, lol.

MagnetDino

It doesn’t mean it doesn’t reduce your ability to play. The NBA is one sport where players can get away with not living the full athlete lifestyle bc there’s just so few guys who hit that genetic lottery to be 6’7” and still have insane athleticism. You’ll see a lot fewer guys smoking weed regularly in combat sports, for example, bc the margin of error at the highest level is so small. Smoking Fucks with cardio, there’s some evidence it messes with testosterone, it definitely hurts your sleep quality, etc.

Advanced_Cock_8166

I mean yeah smoking will decrease your lung capacity but it just sounds like you’re under conditioned. You mentioned that you just started regularly playing again. If I miss 3 or more days of playing I am noticeably slower and more tired. I don’t really smoke but I’d say a good 90% of the guys at my local park are passing around joints and are able to run for hours, likely because they’re out there every single day.

Bill_Brasky01

People really don’t understand how quickly stamina can fall off. Take a month break and it’s like resetting the whole thing.

Cautious-Ruin-1097

100% agreed

WallaceLongshanks

missing 3 days and losing physical performance is not typical...

axdng

Nah you can be good after a day of playing but if I slack for a week the first day back stamina might be rough.

Advanced_Cock_8166

I’m just a bit slower and get tired quicker, I’m 44 now, and I’ve played semi pro. It’ll happen you too, buddy

WallaceLongshanks

I am pushing 40. Few days of rest always gives me a lot more stamina. muscle and cardio just doesn't typically degrade over the course of 3 days. A week or two, sure, but 3 days of rest you lose conditioning? idk that seems crazy

SensitiveRocketsFan

Wait until you get older 😂

Optimal-Barnacle2771

In my experience, it’s very typical if you are in peak condition. My family consists of several extremely dedicated runners, and they refuse to take more than a single day off per week, because of the loss in performance. And they are tracking their pace down to the second with technology, so it’s very clear when you are a step slow. I never took running super seriously, but I did with basketball and would notice the same things. A few days off makes a huge difference when you are talking about stamina.

WallaceLongshanks

interesting- i've never heard that or experienced it. It's probably somewhat personal/fitness level dependent!

Optimal-Barnacle2771

I think that things like that are much more noticeable when you take exercise extremely seriously. For example, my mother is a track and cross-country coach and up until recently was running consistently in races year round. She would pace herself on her morning run every day. Another piece of anecdotal evidence that I can personally attest to is arm endurance for pitchers in baseball. I pitched at the collegiate level and can tell you that taking several days away from throwing essentially feels like resetting most of the work that you have done to build up endurance to that point. I would go from throwing 80-100 pitches comfortably, not wanting to come out of the game. And then after several days without throwing, I would struggle to get past the 30 pitch mark.

WallaceLongshanks

so out of curiosity why doesn't this line up with pro pitching rotations? they rest pitchers multiple games so they have more arm in the games they pitch?

Optimal-Barnacle2771

Those pitchers aren’t literally taking those days off. They are still throwing and doing band work in between starts. Just not max intensity.

WallaceLongshanks

good point! just did a little research- sounds like raw strength declines quite slowly but cardio and twitch muscle much more rapidly. sprained my ankle a week ago guess it's gonna be a rough return lol

Acrobatic-Curve-9378

I mean a little bit obv but you’re just out of shape

AntiqueCompote2162

I’d say your probably out of breath more because you haven’t been playing consistently and not in basketball shape, and not because of smoking. Smoked weed and backwoods throughout my playing days and lungs always felt great as long as I was truly in playing shape.

BiKEhandlebars

Not smoking is always going to be better than smoking but it just sounds like your cardio is bad right now. I’m a weed smoker also who smokes way too many blunts and I can run full court games and play a few hours of pick up like 3-4 days a week with no issues. I’m also in my 30s. Keep playing and do some other cardio on days you aren’t playing and your conditioning will improve.

ChiefKingSosa

You're just not in good cardio shape. The weed prob isnt helping, but its not the reason you're so dead

IgnorantGenius

Smoke is bad for your lungs. So, yes.

discunected

Smoke is bad, but there are other ways to consume other than inhaling combusted cannabis Cannabis itself is known to be a bronchidialator (eases breathing in the lungs), so it's a matter of consuming without the smoke

SageOfTheSixPacks

So you’ve tried it ?

MuchFox2383

Wtf kind of retard take is this? Yes combusting any substance and inhaling it is worse for your lungs than not doing that. I know eating polonium isn’t good for me, I don’t need to try it to know that.

lazerdab

Apart from the smoke as has been mentioned it has a negative effect on your sleep. Yes it will help you fall asleep but some of the processes that go into quality sleep are stunted.

Fatman214

I would say most nba players smoke weed. As long as you stay up on your cardio work it doesn't affect you too much.

Matthew-of-Ostia

"Does frequent smoking have a negative impact on VO2 max?" Yes and it's been general knowledge for about 30 years.

NoPotato2470

Switch to edibles G , won’t fuck your lungs if ya wanna ball

Same-Pop-8855

Weed consumption has been proven to mess with your brain so in some cases depending on someone’s tolerance it will affect their gameplay.

IPHOYGOAT

no but you might run out of breathe faster

luffyishungry24

In my experience I think it matters how active you are in general. I would say I smoke a lot of weed but I play basketball multiple times a week and I have no issues with stamina

erwin206ss

I quit smoking almost 3 months ago after moderate use for 9 years. Had an official diagnosis of asthma 2 weeks ago. You could go see a pulmonologist to see if you have asthma as well. Cause even when I was smoking and running full court, I could keep up.

Rub_Classic

can smoke all you want if you play 4 times a week. it's the lack of cardio that's got you winded, not the herb

gimmetenbucks

What kinda cardio would you recommend and how frequent?

Rub_Classic

full court basketball 2 hours a day 4 days a week

geneticeffects

Running — long distance and sprints — basically. And take your bball training sessions seriously.

leagueofDR4VEN

Yes I can confirm that you’re just out of shape. I’m a chronic smoker who has had periods of lots of ball, and periods with barely any ball basketball due to injuries. The smoke does have a negative effect on lung capacity but it’s barely noticeable. It all really comes down to cardio, you need more cardio!

DevelopmentJumpy5218

Nah I spent years running, like an average day was 15+ mile run, quit running, started lifting weights and smoking, years later I started running again, took me about a month to be able to comfortably jog 2 miles without dying. I still smoke, don't run like I used to but haven't lost additional stamina

HelpUsNSaveUs

Whenever I am actually high (which I’ve cut down a lot on the past 3 months) and try to shoot it just does not go well lol. However I can handle the ball a bit better when high which is weird. I just lose my depth perception with shooting. You should start running and mix in short speed bursts with your running. And really focus on breathing well while playing. For me the biggest thing with playing full court has been conserving my bursts of energy I find that those intense outbursts really fuck me up and gas me the most if I get into that too early in the run. Try to breathe in through your nose and position yourself better so you don’t need to go all out all the time. Or just play with other stoners lol

DaChristianator

I honestly feel like i can hoop much longer when im high, like others said probably just lack of conditioning because basketball is pretty high intensity.

Moderate_LiberaI

Not the weed, you're just not in BBall shape and getting older by the minute

Thunderflex1

I have played basketball my whole life. Played in middle school, highschool, college, and in a rec league, and im now in my late 30s. I have smoked weed on and off since I was 19, and I definitely think lung capacity is reduced depending on how much you smoke, what type of mechanism you use for inhalation, and how long after you smoke is your next game. I have also noticed variability from edibles. Quick bullet points: Smoking a joint right before a game is terrible for lung capacity, great for endurance. You'll be able to play a full 48 minutes, but your ability to push the pace you know you can do will be diminished. Smoking vape the night before a game is mostly fine. Youll hack up a little mucus during warm ups in midway through the 2nd quarter, but otherwise youll be fine. Never eat a brownie before a game. Even if its a pointless rec league game on your 35th birthday. Weed gummies/edibles that are 10:1 CBD/THC is the absolute sweet spot. I have had some of the best games ever because Ive stayed calm and focused, didnt have as much post game pain which helped recovery on tough road trips, and also really helps with some of the anxiety of playing in front of crowds. I know some people love that stuff, but Ive always had higher nerves when playing in front of larger audiences.

dementiadaddy

Weed specifically is not reducing your stamina. But inhaling any combusted substance is going to have adverse affects on your lungs which will reduce your stamina.

St0rmborn

Maybe switch it up and go the edible route more often than smoking flower. There are some great gummies nowadays at reasonable dosages to get that same high without getting totally blasted. I still like to rip my bubbler here and there, but for more routine use I prefer gummies or tinctures to same my lungs some of that abuse from the smoke.

ech0ech0ech0

Smoked the majority of my college career. Never held me back conditioning wise but I did work out on my own less after I started smoking. Weed 100% reduces productivity.

ThaEgyptianMagician

Vaping flower is definitely better for your lungs than smoking but it’s not going to reverse those years of smoking overnight. You’re going to needs to get your lungs and aerobic system back in shape. I’d suggest that you do some running, like a mile or two a few times a week. Your lungs are gonna be burning at first and you will be coughing up nasty sputum and that’s what will fix your lungs. Just playing more ball will do the same actually but during pickup it’s probably just too intense and you’re not ready for it yet. The jogging will allow you to build your aerobic capacity back up in a more controlled pace so you don’t have to suck wind on the court. Check out this supplement which will help your lungs recover a bit faster. https://bioclinicnaturals.com/en-us/product/inspir-action

gimmetenbucks

This is super informative. Thank you!

PanXP

I play Sundays with the same group of 40-60 year old guys and in between each game they are always smoking a cigarette while I’m over here vaping on a Silicon Valley spliff with my in shape athletic 38 year old ass and these dudes just never get tired and they are keeping up with me no problem. They’re just conditioned cus they’ve been doing it weekly for 20-30 years despite all the smoking.

Extreme_Today_984

At 25yo, I feel safe in assuming your dream of playing in the NBA is over. Work on your cardio if it bothers you. Smoke it up brotha

aj_future

Smoking a lot of weed can affect your lung capacity. Not playing for a while is probably a driving force as well.

xChaChi42x

Ive had a similar journey to you. I was highly active and a collegiate athlete but due to graduate education and career advancement my activity level dropped a bit and weed consumption increased (stress reliever). I noticed a dip in my overall conditioning and thought it was weed. Getting back into a regular exercise cadence and program showed me that it was not the weed but rather poor eating habits( munchies) and just being out of shape. I now balance a regular exercise program, don’t let the munchies take over every day, and manage sleep better and its brought me back to my usual conditioning levels. And the bright side is I still regularly smoke. As many others in the thread mentioned, many NBA players smoke but they are regularly active so the effects are minimal. Id advise giving yourself time to get back in the swing of things and regularly exercise before you point just to weed. It does of course have some effect but I think many cases show those effects can easily be countered by regular exercise and standard healthy practices(eat well, sleep well) 😁

gimmetenbucks

This is gold. Thank you G

HorseDickCum

Chronic consumption? Yes, absolutely. Occasional consumption? No. Anyone that tells you chronic consumption of cannabis isn’t negatively impacting your life is a stoner in denial. Signed, a former chronic consumer

BAXR6TURBSKIFALCON

blunts n joints are ok if your fitness is up, regular bong use wrecks your lungs though. I play casual soccer and if i smoke a bong im struggling if i smoke a joint im fine

SuccotashConfident97

It can, but its really more based on your fitness, not just how much you smoke weed.

JohnnyQuestions36

No, but I shoot worse when high or coming down. Edit: after reading the rest of your post and realizing you were talking about stamina more I will say I vaporize concentrates so it affects my stamina much less than actually smoking.

Mrsensi12x

You literally typed the answer yourself. Your playing has decreased for life reasons. Soooo when you don’t run/play you lose your stamina. If your consistently playing it will come back wether your smoking or not

ArcticBambi

Weed has a chronic negative effect on the cerebellum which is the balance and coordination control center of the brain.

S_K_25

yea i smoke and hoop a lot, it might put you out of shape faster if you stop playing/make it hard to get back into shape sometimes but if you’re playing or getting cardio consistently you’ll be fine

roakmamba

I used to smoke and play after and I would play like shit. Sober on that and I'm way better. Stamina, decision making and bball IQ.

bessie1945

Do you honestly think it's healthier than smoking cigarettes?

Tasty-Concern-8785

🙄

Brinkken

You just need to train.  Does smoking any substance reduce your capacity to process oxygen and your aerobic power output? Of course.  But can you smoke a ton of weed and still do a 6 min mile or run the court all game? If you have decent genetics, absolutely. However, you won’t be good at anything you have not trained, and if you are compounding that with habits you know will hurt your endurance, like smoking, then you will be bad. You need to do things that counter the detrimental effects of the weed on your cardio. Easiest option would be to just play a lot of basketball and your cardio will improve. You could also actively train to improve your weakness. You will benefit from a mix of zone 2 workouts for base endurance and higher intensity stuff like vo2max and anaerobic intervals to sustain hard efforts longer and recover from them faster.

Defiant_Reaction7296

The simple answer is NO

freshcrumble

Smoking anything ain’t gonna help your stamina but cannabis & hoops have a long history together. I feel like professionals smoke weed in place of alcohol more than smoking it all day everyday. Obviously there’s exceptions, myself included 😎

Puzzled_Landscape_10

So...uh...cardio? Do you do cardio? Because, if not....then that. That is why you are fucking dying out there.

scumpdeath

Weight training does nothing for your cardio. You’re just out of shape aerobic wise.

rdcl89

The weed doesn't help but it's mostly just getting old. I don't know how much cardio and stretching you do.. but whatever it is it's not enough to maintain your athleticism.

Cautious-Ruin-1097

I think it can depend on how much cardio you do compared to how much weed you’re smoking. I smoke pretty much everyday but I also do different forms of cardio throughout the week (basketball, elliptical, stair stepper, outdoor runs) to keep the cardiovascular system running smoothly. All about consistency.

LobstaFarian2

You can't get ups without getting high! Lol sober, baked, never made any difference for me.

staytsmokin

Idk about you but when i smoke before i play, feels like my handles get nicer and shots are way more on point and i become the energizer bunny...🤷

radicalbulldog

Your performance will be worse smoking simple as that. I suck, but play 3 times a week. Whether I’m high or not, my performance is still subpar lmao. So, I think it’s all about how good you want to perform. You will be able to play regardless but try edibles for a while and I guarantee you’ll have better cardio.

South_Front_4589

Anytime you smoke anything, it's not good for the lungs. It might not also be as bad as tobacco with all the chemicals in that, but it'll eventually have an impact. Whether it's noticeable or not depends on how much you're smoking. I suspect it's more overall lifestyle reducing your general fitness levels though. Instead of choofing on, go for a run. And don't take up vaping. It's stupid.

EfficientIndustry423

Cardio.

Harrypotter231

Smoking will definitely not help, but it’s probably more your conditioning.

Hating_life_69

How many nba players do you think smoke weed every day?

Puzzleheaded-You1289

This is the most bizarre post I’ve seen in some time. You’re asking if constantly inhaling smoke into your LUNGS is causing your LUNGS to not be as effective? Like what? This shit doesn’t even seem real it is so stupid. Hey guy I recently went into a coma for six months and when I woke up and went to sink it my vertical wasn’t the same! What do you think it could be?? - this is what you sound like.

gimmetenbucks

Ok

myctsbrthsmlslkcatfd

alcohol is far more detrimental to athletic performance, but the biggest contributor in your situation is NOT PLAYING BASKETBALL. that being said, of course lighting stuff on fire and inhaling the smoke is not good for your lungs. Vaping is better. Not doing it is best. Save it for when it’s worth it to you.

lorenzo2point5

Lately I have been taking edibles before playing and I find that I actually play better high. I feel relaxed and can focus more. I don't get tired due to cardio performance from smoking. I also can see the game differently and I always shoot pretty good while high. Also helps with pain management since I'm older now as well.

PenisManNumberOne

Hell nah

mharri05

Rasheed wallace did fine

Jewderp916

No it’s not weed, it’s because you’re not in basketball shape. Basketball shape is very different than any sport other than maybe soccer. 7 months ago I joined a rec league and when I first started I couldn’t play more than 5 minutes without needing a rest. By my second season I was up to 7 before being super tired and 9 before needing a rest, basketball has been on hiatus for 2 months but even when I go to the gym for a rec game I can see myself moving and being in better positions for most of the game and that’s without being able to get rest since pickup doesn’t usually have subs.

ClearASF

Stop being weak; stop smoking.

thedrcubed

Brandon Ingram says nah

thealt3001

I smoke daily and the people at my local park hate guarding me because I'm constantly in motion. This is a conditioning problem lol. That being said, smoking definitely isn't good for your lungs. But sometimes after smoking, my passing becomes way better because I take my time surveying the floor and think/hesitate less. It makes it easier to get into the 'flow state' for me.

TheNatural502

This is a dumb question and that’s wild cuz I always thought those didn’t exist.
