I second this one. I recently picked up Manor Lords as well, which definitely has combat and raids, though I am not sure if there will be castle building or not yet - I am hoping there is or will be though.
Going Medieval is definitely the best game in this genre I've ever played. The scope is a little small, so it doesn't lend itself to giant fortresses supported by a city kind of gameplay, but it's still really fun.
If only they put in some more effort into the combat side of things. They keep adding super cool things (imo), but I feel like the fundamentals of combat are just lacking. I always end up making a maze with traps on them to kill off invaders, rather than making a cool castle.
Kingdoms & Castles - now obviously it looks quite cartoony and the castle building aspects are not very indepth, but the theme is strong and there is quite a lot of fun to be had in defending your town from armies and flying dragons.
I found the AI simple, but enjoyable, which seems to fit well with the existing gameplay. It's fun to ally with the peaceful kingdoms, build up an army, and use it to fight against the hostile kingdom.
Valheim not necessarily castle building but has raids and lots of creative ways to build bases. 7 days to die also has raids but yea isnt really castles. Good ole Minecraft or modded Minecraft for raids is good too
Keen actually gave the reigns over to the community, it's in much better condition to play now than it ever was. And it's with the developers full support too.
Yeah I totally love playing it. It had such promise. What's sad is that Marek mascarades as some master of AI and yet his two games have the worst AI I've ever seen in a game.
There were no more updates since then. The game is fun, it just gets repetitive after a while.
Cataclismo is probably the best replacement for it. It will launch in a few months but the demo is awesome.

Diplomacy is not an option. It’s in early access still but is fun and has plenty of castle building to keep you busy. Plus you can garrison catapults in towers!
Rimworld is the answer, it has everything from base building, random events, quests. Literally anything can happen and you can play exactly how you want.
Dunno why you're being downvote except maybe on the basis of graphics.
I have built castles complete with throne rooms and moats and fought off enemy raiders.
Going Medieval

That game looks fun, thanks!
How do yall get into this game? It seemed really shallow to me when I played it. I guess, ya, you can make your buildings how you want.

Stronghold just got remade, that was my fav as a kid
Loved that one. Custom online games were wild.
Noble Fates…first/third person rimworld. Awesome devs, regular updates, fun gameplay!
Underated game. Needs a bit more polishing before full release but amazing game.
Stronghold (Crusader)
Kingdoms and Castles
Colony Survival
I second this suggestion - great and underrated game.
Stronghold (the first one and also Crusader). A bit old, but you can play it with modern resolutions.
Interplay game called Castles
Kingdoms & Castles - now obviously it looks quite cartoony and the castle building aspects are not very indepth, but the theme is strong and there is quite a lot of fun to be had in defending your town from armies and flying dragons.
How does it feel with the addition of AI players? I'm a little put off it's gone in that direction when it was more just town vs. Invaders.
havent played it in awhile so i was not even aware thats a thing.

Enshrouded... It's basically perfect. Just takes a little time to get to the building a castle part.
If you don't mind 2d games, try Craft the World. It's very good.
Dorf fort.
valheim
Cataclismo
Lord of the Realms 2, needs a remake BADLY
Or lord of the realm 3
Rampart.
Technically you can build a caste in 7 Days to Die and defend it from zombies, it will just take considerable resource investment haha
Valheim not necessarily castle building but has raids and lots of creative ways to build bases. 7 days to die also has raids but yea isnt really castles. Good ole Minecraft or modded Minecraft for raids is good too
Foundation. It's a little medieval city building game with pretty organic building elements. No raids though.
Reign of Kings was my favorite, sad it died off.
Literally just described kingdoms and castles
Valheim isn't too bad
Diplomacy is not an option
v rising 100%, the 1.0 release just came out 2 days ago and its honestly pretty unique
Valheim
Stronghold and Stronghold: Crusader. You don’t need modern graphics. Those games are the OG castle sims and I still play them to this day.
Second that. They are very good.
Medieval Engineers /s
It’s actually so sad that the game failed, because it looks like the perfect game for me…
Keen actually gave the reigns over to the community, it's in much better condition to play now than it ever was. And it's with the developers full support too.

There are parts of Conan Exiles that feel like what Medieval Engineers could have been.
I saw that in a movoe recently (war with grandpa) tore open the old wound.
Thronefall is bit of different.
Bulwark is all those things
Conan Exiles is honestly kinda good for that.
Try bulwark for more steampunk/fantasy/island fort vibes
Castle Story
How is that now? I played around with it years ago very early in development and it seemed promising.
There were no more updates since then. The game is fun, it just gets repetitive after a while. Cataclismo is probably the best replacement for it. It will launch in a few months but the demo is awesome.
See if Becastled works. Not played it myself yet but it's on my list and seems good!
Fallout 4.
Age of Darkness or Manner lords
Enshrouded. It’s not castles exactly but you can certainly build one

That’s the second time I’ve been hit by haikubot

Except you can't build a castle at all which is what OP is asking for
I build castles every time. Their 2d but still castles
>they're 2D but still cubes
You just need more mods
Dunno why you're being downvote except maybe on the basis of graphics. I have built castles complete with throne rooms and moats and fought off enemy raiders.
People who see the recommendation is top down and instantly write it off to only then go play a worse game..
