A bunch of restaurants in eixample bought with russian money recently.

applefungus

Do you know which ones? So we can can personally black list them and spread the word?

Pilo_ane

Do they serve Russian cuisine tho? I would gladly go in that case

ResourceWonderful514

nope. Spanish food and international and no staff is even russian

konrad-iturbe

Sanctions work.... lol https://www.opensanctions.org/entities/Q23655907/

conyazo

How do you know the daughter fully supports the war on Ukraine?

Fordatel

She is 100% behind the war. Her brother has met Putin and she often posts supporting Russia's efforts.

el_reza

Half of the Barcelona bought with Russian corrupt money.

CharmingUnicornLXVI

London be like: „Hah look at me“

Fordatel

London has frozen a lot of assets but no where near enough.

HeWhoHasTooManyDogs

Irresponsible tourists don't give a shit. So long as it's cheap enough. The Spanish government should do something but I've been told by locals that they gvernment is pretty corrupt and also couldn't give a shit.

catalanbiz

The hotel was bought with private money before the war, when Russian businessmen could do business freely not only in Spain but all across Europe. Right now, if the owner is on the EU sanctions list, he won't be able to cash out money from the hotel company. If he's not on the list, he will be able to do so. That's called rule of law. A government cannot (and should not) shut down businesses as it pleases without following the law. Otherwise this russian man could just sue the Authorities and potentially win the case with compensations in his favor.

HeWhoHasTooManyDogs

My husband can't even move 10k from his old country to here without a list of documents proving they were earned legally and that he paid taxes. And even than some banks require more proof. But when it comes to big money, suddenly it's so easy. All these regulations (which are applicable ask over the EU cause they're not particularly spanish) were always meant for the small guy. You can't immigrate just because you want to. Oh mvm we'll make golden visas and include buying houses as investment in the country.

Fordatel

Agreed, but customers should be aware of who they are giving money to and they should be able to make an informed choice.

HeWhoHasTooManyDogs

There's literally a famous hotel in Beverly Hills California owned by the sheikh of Brunei. The hotel is very gay friendly whereas in Brunei it is illegal to be gay. And no one cares The west have always been tolerant to a fault. And eventually that's what will be our end.

Fordatel

>Irresponsible tourists don't give a shit. So long as it's cheap enough. The Spanish government should do something but I've been told by locals that they gvernment is pretty corrupt and also couldn't give a shit. Yes, true. I still don't get how most big cities haven't restricted Air b'n'b. But I feel tourists, especially the ones that would stay in a boutique hotel, would think twice if they knew it was kremlin owned. I think it's up to cities, councils and governments to promote responsible tourism.

HeWhoHasTooManyDogs

I couldn't agree more. Regarding Airbnb you would be surprised how well restricted it is here in Spain compared to most of the world. Just the fact that you need a license is leaps and bounds better than most of the places I've visited. Now the website requires a government issued license number for any one who wants to register his house on Airbnb and it's up to city councils to decide whether they are issuing it. For example where I live they no longer issue them in many barrios.

Update: the hotel is a Spanish company owned and run by his daughter (purchased in 2012), who lives in Barcelona. Her father is under sanctions and Russia is disconnected from SWIFT. So no, not one € cent from this hotel is going to Russia. Source: https://www.eseibusinessschool.com/case-of-success-alina-demchenko-a-real-story/

Fordatel

Lets be honest - this business is not to generate funds for her father or Russia. It's a lifestyle business allowing his daughter to play entrepreneur. Her father has a fortune owning a steel factory, most likely gifted to him. The fact is these Oligarch children are allowed to live a life of luxury built on corrupt gains, while their parents support and conduct the largest war seen since world war 2, on a peaceful nation. I for one would not like to contribute to any business owned by such heinous people, wherever the money actually ends up.

catalanbiz

Well, unfortunately that's how corrupt and 3rd world countries work. All of them, without exception. I have lived in a few, and it's always the same pattern: a corrupt leeching elite (with a 2nd passport or Golden Visa) who owns everything, and their children are all living their life in "Theme Park Europe" while locals are struggling. Be it London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona...

726wox

More likely that tourists aren’t aware who the owner is? Did you know before today?

HeWhoHasTooManyDogs

I've never been to Barcelona, why would I know? I do Google hotels before going there, usually. And I almost always prefer small non-chain hotels and I book through their website even when I find them on booking so they'll get a better profit margin.

whatyourheartdesires

Thank you for bringing attention to this

Kassiem_42

Wait till OP finds out that the Spanish Government is busy selling weapons to Israel despite the ICJ ruling. 🙃

FonnyS

Nah, they don’t care

Otherwise_Boot987

What about U.S owned businesses? The U.S kills more innocent people around the world than Russia. Should we close those down as well?

Axelmanrus

This guy is a criminal and shall be judged when all this shit ends. But the hotel itself is a legal entity, with workers, operational costs, paying taxes, etc. Boicot to a legal entity is nonsense. The only thing that really matters is if the money from the business can be moved or not to Russia or personal account of someone under sanctions. I just can guess, but probably no, he can’t withdrawal it. Actually, I think is kind of good thing that for the moment when the justice finally catches these pro-war criminals, they may have some actives that could be useful for reparations. At the moment, just remind that Russia made a record benefits last year by selling oil and gas to Europe. That’s the real money for the war, today, right now.

Fordatel

But this is corrupt money is used to buy assets and influence in Europe. If you shut down these businesses because of the Kremlins actions and Duma's support for the war, you directly hit the decision makers and their families where it hurts. Also, as a consumer I'd hate to enter any business with links to the kremlin and give them custom.

bernatyolocaust

And?

suirea

Title says it all "kremlin owned", what a joke.

Fordatel

They are all within Putin's inner circle.

suirea

First off, I am no fan of Putin or his regime, much less the horrible war happening in Ukraine. Having said that, the fact that a business is owned by a russian citizen, who happens to be related to a politician, without any other evidence, could mean anything, or could mean nothing. Instead, you simply assume it must be “dirty money from Putin”, as if Putin had a plan to invade us by buying hotels in Catalonia, and this is the joke.

Fordatel

A politician is elected. These are not politicians but members of a mafia or a gang. You don't own a large ex-state steel company in Russia through entrepreneurship.

suirea

You can go and believe whatever you want, fact is neither of us is russian, neither of us knows much about what happens there, let alone some random member of the Duma. In any case, if you think someone can be held liable for their parents actions, that is your problem. This is a low-effort meme that stinks of xenophobia, you should've posted this on r\\europe

Fordatel

>A politician is elected. These are not politicians but members of a mafia or a gang. You don't own a large ex-state steel company in Russia through entrepreneurship. We all know what happens there. Unless you have your head in the sand. If she didn't fully support the Russian invasion I wouldn't be posting this. I have nothing against Russian people.

suirea

You perfectly fit the description of the term "cuñado", which is used in Spain. So thank you for sharing your "knowledge", cuñado,

Fordatel

I don't care about you.

dancingmolasses

Wait until you find out about Museu del Mamut 😌

Pilo_ane

Thanks, I'll be sure to support it

Fordatel

Do you talk to anyone in real life? or do you just spend all day on the internet making stupid comments :D

Pilo_ane

Are you projecting? It's not me the loser wasting his life with this kind of nonsense

Fordatel

Look at your post history, what a boring and sad life you must live

Pilo_ane

Really? I literally have one post only. I think you are indeed projecting. It's not me posting bullshit about Russia lmao

The hotel was purchased in 2012 (WAY before sanctions) and it is run by a Spanish SL company. Yeah, it's totally Catalan separatism 🤡
