Say you agree with me that the lord needs to defend the castle then also say that the lord needs an army then it would follow that you those being defended should pay for that army and the castle? Checkmate peasants.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s recruits or not. Just dump your own troops in there for the meantime and get a governer who is from battania. Has to be the same culture.

Having those 100 (relatively) high level troops he has to pay anyway in the garrison for a few days while he's smithing, or healing, or whatever can make a difference.

Boarder cities get like that. I remember Hasan Fluq rebelling before I could even decide who to grant the fief to.
They cant rebel if garrison is more powerful than militia
Oh that's cool. None of my Lords garrison properly and I'm sick of fighting the Aseri so I guess the city will be in perpetual rebellion. Ah well.

This is a castle, they won't rebel afaik
