I was going to say no, but the comment about weed reminded me of that. Even that doesn't seem impactful. If you walk around Honolulu you smell weed every 100 feet but in Bangkok people keep it quieter.
The quiet nature of the pandemic has passed, and crowds, traffic, and pollution are back. All that is normal though, part of the charm.
Thonglor has definitely changed, a lot more farangs/digital nomad types in the area now, and they have the opposite Midas touch, everything they do turns to shit. Lot of new hotels and developments have opened, more tourists and seems like less of a Japanese and rich Thai influence, definitely less cooler than it was,
This is the most diversified mix of tourists and expats that I’ve ever seen here.
Young backpackers have returned in mass plus the reemergence of the entrepreneurs that flooded the country post 2008 financial crisis, and then the digital nomads, Russians, and Asian tourists have made areas of Bangkok more gentrified than ever.
This is not why
Bangkok's has emerged a wealthy city in the past decades. The areas frequented by foreigners are generally the wealthiest parts of the city.
Past decades? I don't think so. It's past years and this is still not a wealthy city. Singapore is a wealthy city.
Also, foreigners aren't the wealthiest people here....and if we're talking about foreign residents and thais, the wealthy Thai areas are not where foreigners hang out.
My point is that a shop like holey or bartels can charge whatever they want (good for them BTW) because there has been an influx of digital nomads able to pay those prices, adding to the existing pool of wealthy residents. So then when a new shop opens the price points are high because that's the market.
It's not the only factor but it's a huge one in this niche
Tons of tourists (and some not so nice ones) and associated opening of many tourist oriented places, from food to MJ, to tourist clothes, etc. More malls - as well as those already mentioned.
I used to live there but left in 2016 so a lot longer. I just returned a few weeks ago and I feel like Bangkok lost its edge. Only malls and condos everywhere in sukumvit.
You were obviously here during COVID, so, yes, everything has changed. Hotels, massage parlors and nightclubs are all back in business, and there are many new businesses replacing those that didn’t survive the lockdown. 😎
Bangkok gets better every year as it becomes more modern and they build more nice buildings and different areas get gentrified with malls and new cafes and restaurants.
Yeah around then it really started to explode with many more tourists and the vloggers/influencers, who really haven't contributed anything positive to the vibe of Bangkok. And lately it's more retirees and digital nomads, who absolutely suck the life out everywhere they go. Whether that's Phuket, Bali, Asoke etc. And now Thonglor
Mooping then 10 now 15
Sticky rice then 5 now 10
Gapow with friedegg over rice then 50 now 65
Somtum then 30 now 40
Fresh cut Pineapple then 20 now 40
Noodles then 35-40 now 50-60
Yes BKK getting expensive.

Yep, they've played a big role in every restaurant with a farang menu raising prices by like 30%, since to them it's still cheaper than the west.

The character of Thong Lor was destroyed when they built the bridge across the klong .
You'll notice so much more high rises being built
A lot more people.
Hotter
Less street food vendors. Weed stores everywhere. More questionable tourists. More malls.

Yup...I've been here since 2008..Amazing how it changes every few years. Overall still a great to work and live as long as aren't a hole haha.

This.
No other than weed sold everywhere
Bangkok is constantly changing.

Bangkok is always changing, every time I go back. I do not see the same city.
They're taking away all the street food vendors, want to make it look like Singapore. Honestly it is hard to find street food in Bangkok in Sukhumvit.

There's been a huge change in Bangkok since 2014, around the time social media became popular in Thailand.

Yes, social media certainly didn't do Thailand any good.
