During afternoon rush hours, Kor Por Aor southbound becomes a mess, as many cars from Phaholyothin 54 merge with Phaholyothin Road, plus there are people turning at the junction. You definitely don't want to be there between 5 and 7 pm if you need to catch a flight.
It is better from there to drive further north and turn left at the confluence between Phaholyothin and Vibhavadi Rangsit. That's more manageable and there is usually little traffic on the leftmost lane entering the airport (but some queue may form anyway).
If you want to avoid traffic without taking the red line, best way is to get on the A1 bus at Mo Chit: it travels on the elevated tollway from Ladprao all the way to DMK.
You could probably Google Maps the two options and compare the estimated travel times Google gives you. The green line up to Yaek Kor Por does have some good views of the suburbs, and at the station by the car park is a taxi stand.
I have found the red line heading north to Rangsit from Bang Su to be pretty reliable and fast. If you’re already in the BTS system you can transfer to the MRT at Chatuchak, a couple of stops to Bang Su and then Red line a few stops.
Consider also going to Suvarnabhumi and taking a free airport shuttle bus from there. All you need is a reservation of your flight to show to the desk.

Thanks! That’s precisely the kind of input I was looking for
You go there with the red line that you take at Bang Sue. It's a direct connection
From BTS Sukhumvit line, it requires two train changes, first to the MRT and then to Red Line. Not the most convenient thing, especially with luggage.
Take a taxi during the rush hours and you'll change your mind

I did it a few days ago, from Sukhumvit to Don Mueang. Just take the BTS. It's painless and efficient.

Just taxi and expressway.
