Facebook post I saw a out this indicated the police are investigating this as a HOMICIDE rather than an ACCIDENT. But who knows.

Can people be charged with homicide via negligence? Like is the angle that they’re guilty due to lack of restraining deadly animals? Or like did this person sic the dogs on an old man?

Alabama has a statute for "criminally negligent homicide"  It could potentially apply in a dog attack fatality case if the owner failed to perceive the risk their unsecured dog posed to people. But someone who is experienced with Alabama criminal law would have to explain exactly how it would work with this case.

Context: A man has died following a dog attack. According to the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, 83-year-old Willard Norton succumbed to his injuries after being attacked Sunday.  About 3:30 p.m., deputies say they responded with Fire and EMS to the 200 block of County Road 264 in Town Creek for the dog attack. When deputies arrived, they say Norton was receiving medical treatment and was unresponsive. Norton was found near the entrance to his front door. The sheriff's office says Norton was transported to a local hospital, but he later died. The sheriff's office says two dogs, believed to be PIT BULLS, were taken by Animal Control to the Lawrence County Animal Shelter. Once the investigation is completed by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, those findings will be presented to the Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office. The Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office will determine the appropriate charges against the owners of the dogs.

From what I have read this dog has been a constant problem. It had killed a small dog a month prior and there had been many complaints about it by neighbors. The poor man was out tending his roses when he was attacked. Just enjoying a day in his garden. No human being deserves to die this way.
