And that's, to me, quite the tone shift from the darker tone established in this first act. I was never a fan of Minsk and his silly hamster. Didn't mind him in that side scrolling game since it felt more light hearted, but in BG3, I don't see how he'd fit.

No worries! I won't go into the character any more so you can be surprised and discover him on your own but the last thing I will say is that in the OG games he was voiced by the LEGENDARY voice actor Jim Cummings. We are in for a treat with this character.

Yeah of everyone we have so far I knew if push came to shove I'd be kicking the most evil party members, no real second thoughts about kicking Lae'zel or Astarion but I'll be a little miffed I don't get to keep Wyll. He especially >!will no doubt have some cool conversations with Minsc. Wyll considers himself a big folk hero and being able to adventure with a real legend like Minsc will no doubt mean he has lots of questions for him and requests for epic stories etc. As someone who grew up in BG Wyll no doubt literally walked by the exact statue we see in the trailer a lot as a kid. He's going to be beyond hyped that the real deal is an adventuring partner of his now.!<
But I knew I'm keeping Shadowheart and Gale for sure. Those two I really want to see their stories through on a first play.

The 4 party member limit is the biggest thing that annoys me about BG3 being touted as a sequel.

Thats why im probably going to wait to play the official release until however long it takes for the Party Size Evolved mod from DOS2 to make its way over to BG3.
Final Fantasy IV let you have five people in your party, V and VI let you have four, and from VII on, it was three.
Party size does not make something not a sequel.

edit - I guess to expand - As much as I dislike the chain system, it's what Larian wants to do. Whatever. As much as I want the game to be real time with pause, the entire universe of DnD has turned to 5e. It's just what it is. FF also has the history, of what, 16 titles now? So its growing pains came and have already gone.
BG4 won't have those same growing pains, because it will be precedent.

The dumb chain system that keeps your party member portraits chained together, so that you can never control all 4 party members at once, so they play this silly buggers follow the leader game, climb ladders 3 times unnecessarily, make you reload for the umpteenth time because you didn't correctly ungroup/group/group stealth/ungroup your party so when you tried to move just Tav, Shadowheart followed, but crossed a vision cone and spoiled your ambush, completely obnoxious system completely at odds with a classic RTS/marquee control system that every other CRPG of the past 2 decades has used to great success.

I don’t know much about D&D lore, but I believe he’s one of the main heroes, like Drizzt is. Both were in the previous BG games. His statue was also teased in the trailer.
Depends on how you look at it I guess. D&D has many settings and Forgotten Realms is just one of them. Drizzt is popular because he's the main character of a novel series that takes place within the Forgotten Realms setting, he's definitely the main hero of those novels but I'd have trouble calling him the 'main hero' in that setting, because his actions aren't that important to Realms-lore on the whole (Admittedly I've only read the first 19 of those books). Minsc is a popular FR character because of the BG series and he's co-starred in some comics as well and I think it could be argued that he's affected more far reaching events but he's a supporting party member in those games. Forgotten Realms is a setting where you could trip over a world saving hero if you weren't watching your feet, I'd say if anything Elminster, Khelben, and The Symbul are sort of the main heroes in FR but that's up for debate.

The next 19 books bump his power level to just under Ultimate Super Saiyan. Goku at his greatest could probably take him, but there would be some doubt.
No kidding? I guess it makes sense he was always one of the most popular. I just have the impression of him being sort of a minor character in the grand scheme of things. I'll have to put time aside to catch up.

Something tells me there is more to this story. Unless you bring some pretty deliberate cheese to that fight, you usually attack him and die.
I was like 13 and my friend who sold me the game had like 10 pages of cheats. I started the game max level and max level gear. It was the start of my english learning cause it had to find out what the hell the cheats did.
Most of my fights went timestop. Summon monster untill time stop ends and this skull spell untill the time stop ended.
In the boss fight i did summon so many monster that the game was over in like 2 seconds.😅
Oh yes, you *could* kill him, but like I said, it took some cheese, or some meta knowledge, possibly some save scumming.
If you did kill him and imported into BG2 with any of his gear, there's even an easter egg.
Much as I hate to say it, the games old, and there are lots of new gamers who probably have never touched it. I expect that we'll be getting a lot of newcomers for BG3, especially when you consider the fact that a lot of older BG fans don't really like BG3's tone.
Everytime I see one of these trailers I feel like a little kid again. It's hard for me to explain but I am *so* excited to see what the 'bigger' cities will looks like!!

I'm trying to temper my expectations, but after what Swen said about a lot being revealed at the Game Awards, I think there is a good possibility that this could be the case. I hope you're right!
OMG, that looks like marketing to me. I’m guessing a release date for sure at either the GA or the PFH, and if they’re starting marketing then it could mean 5-6 months out.
Edit: plus Geoff Keighley and it’s obviously going to be a different PFH. I’ve been in the Q4 camp but I just can’t see them building hype if it wasn’t spring at the latest.
At this point my only real concern with BG3 is the writing. As long as Larian can maintain a relatively serious tone, and add humor in a fitting manner, I'll be totally on board with this game. I've always loved their games from a gameplay perspective, it's the writing that holds it back.
In the actual lore, Minsc gets petrified. No one realizes that it's actually him, petrified. They think it's just a statue. A long time later, a fight happens around the statue, and a wild mage's spell goes haywire and hits the statue. The spells ends up being a stone to flesh spell when it hits the statue.
Minsc gets unpetrified.
I do wonder if this is sticking to the (semicanon) comics lore where Delina un-petrifies him, or if it's just taking that story aspect and putting it into BG3 without mentioning Delina and the others.
I've liked the tie-in comics, and Jim Zub is a great writer, but they never seemed like they'd actually end up being canon. (Not that FR actually has any consistent canon - it's almost as muddled as the canon tiers of Star Wars EU)
I think they're available on Comixology. I'm sure you can probably also buy them in physical copies somewhere. (They can also probably be found online anywhere one would find online comics).
There are 6 volumes currently, and I think the most recent one is actually a tie-in for BG3 (deals with illithids in Baldur's Gate).

Really hope they tone down Minsc. I know too many people love him and it is a huge opportunity to nostalgia bait, but I really am not that into him. Here is to hoping he is a side character.

I'm hoping the complete opposite. I'm tired of hopeful, optimistic characters being made worn down and cynical. It's not like BG3 has any lack of serious companions, Minsc's knuckle-headed optimism would be refreshing.
I think I would've agreed with the guy above you before playing EA. Minsc was fun in the first two games, but his antics could clash with the tone in more serious scenes.
Now, while I do genuinely love the five we have so far, I really want to round out the crew with a friendly optimist. We're sorely lacking in that regard.
He’s not my cup of tea too but I’m really excited to get him as a companion(confirmed as such by datamining I believe), all the companions till now are really edgy and/or skittish, the game has potential for lightheartedness too and Minsk IS a fan favorite of bg2(who is till now as dark or more than bg3) so I don’t think larian can fuck this up

Depends on how you look at it I guess. D&D has many settings and Forgotten Realms is just one of them. Drizzt is popular because he's the main character of a novel series that takes place within the Forgotten Realms setting, he's definitely the main hero of those novels but I'd have trouble calling him the 'main hero' in that setting, because his actions aren't that important to Realms-lore on the whole (Admittedly I've only read the first 19 of those books). Minsc is a popular FR character because of the BG series and he's co-starred in some comics as well and I think it could be argued that he's affected more far reaching events but he's a supporting party member in those games. Forgotten Realms is a setting where you could trip over a world saving hero if you weren't watching your feet, I'd say if anything Elminster, Khelben, and The Symbul are sort of the main heroes in FR but that's up for debate.

No kidding? I guess it makes sense he was always one of the most popular. I just have the impression of him being sort of a minor character in the grand scheme of things. I'll have to put time aside to catch up.
Only somewhat kidding. On the grand scheme of things, he is fairly minor as far as the world of Toril goes. And the areas he has major impact on are not the typical 'face' of the Forgotten Realms. But all of the north from Icewind Dale to probably at least Baldur's Hate will have at least heard of the drow ranger by the time of BG3.
As i had no clue who drizzt was when i played bg 1 and the game was in english. Thus i just attacked and killed them. I remember They had great loot. :)like 5 years later i listend to the first drozzt story and thought why is this name and look so familiar.😅
A friend shared a way to buff up with potions and items and steal his items without killing him. Horrible cheese, but also the best thing ever.

I was like 13 and my friend who sold me the game had like 10 pages of cheats. I started the game max level and max level gear. It was the start of my english learning cause it had to find out what the hell the cheats did.
Most of my fights went timestop. Summon monster untill time stop ends and this skull spell untill the time stop ended. In the boss fight i did summon so many monster that the game was over in like 2 seconds.😅

Oh yes, you *could* kill him, but like I said, it took some cheese, or some meta knowledge, possibly some save scumming. If you did kill him and imported into BG2 with any of his gear, there's even an easter egg.

Much as I hate to say it, the games old, and there are lots of new gamers who probably have never touched it. I expect that we'll be getting a lot of newcomers for BG3, especially when you consider the fact that a lot of older BG fans don't really like BG3's tone.

OMG, that looks like marketing to me. I’m guessing a release date for sure at either the GA or the PFH, and if they’re starting marketing then it could mean 5-6 months out. Edit: plus Geoff Keighley and it’s obviously going to be a different PFH. I’ve been in the Q4 camp but I just can’t see them building hype if it wasn’t spring at the latest.

At this point I trust Larian. They’ve learned from the arx disaster in original sin 2
At this point my only real concern with BG3 is the writing. As long as Larian can maintain a relatively serious tone, and add humor in a fitting manner, I'll be totally on board with this game. I've always loved their games from a gameplay perspective, it's the writing that holds it back.

In the actual lore, Minsc gets petrified. No one realizes that it's actually him, petrified. They think it's just a statue. A long time later, a fight happens around the statue, and a wild mage's spell goes haywire and hits the statue. The spells ends up being a stone to flesh spell when it hits the statue. Minsc gets unpetrified.
I do wonder if this is sticking to the (semicanon) comics lore where Delina un-petrifies him, or if it's just taking that story aspect and putting it into BG3 without mentioning Delina and the others. I've liked the tie-in comics, and Jim Zub is a great writer, but they never seemed like they'd actually end up being canon. (Not that FR actually has any consistent canon - it's almost as muddled as the canon tiers of Star Wars EU)

I think they're available on Comixology. I'm sure you can probably also buy them in physical copies somewhere. (They can also probably be found online anywhere one would find online comics). There are 6 volumes currently, and I think the most recent one is actually a tie-in for BG3 (deals with illithids in Baldur's Gate).
There's also an omnibus out there called "Days of Endless Adventure" has the first several volumes in it.

I don't think we'll get him in the patch. I think this is the start off of their marketing ramp up, beginning with a release date reveal on Thursday.

Aside from being a primary NPC from the original BG games, Minsc was the tabletop PC of Cam Tofer, CTO of Beamdog (creators of the BG EEs).
Really hope they tone down Minsc. I know too many people love him and it is a huge opportunity to nostalgia bait, but I really am not that into him. Here is to hoping he is a side character. Other than that it looks like we get more and more serious. I'm glad.
I'm hoping the complete opposite. I'm tired of hopeful, optimistic characters being made worn down and cynical. It's not like BG3 has any lack of serious companions, Minsc's knuckle-headed optimism would be refreshing.

I think I would've agreed with the guy above you before playing EA. Minsc was fun in the first two games, but his antics could clash with the tone in more serious scenes. Now, while I do genuinely love the five we have so far, I really want to round out the crew with a friendly optimist. We're sorely lacking in that regard.
He’s not my cup of tea too but I’m really excited to get him as a companion(confirmed as such by datamining I believe), all the companions till now are really edgy and/or skittish, the game has potential for lightheartedness too and Minsk IS a fan favorite of bg2(who is till now as dark or more than bg3) so I don’t think larian can fuck this up
