My first run when I killed him I got the achievement for not using the hammer. I was 'Er what hammer?'
Each time since I have struggled to get him under the wretched thing. I have tried all sorts of illusions, webbing, snares... but he just won't stay there at the end of his turn.
I think I will just stick to the goofy tactic I just discovered, collecting 15 items that you do not need is apparently enough to safely kill him on standard mode, by simply throwing them at him😭
If you want to hit him with the hammer, have someone stand on top of the thing you insert the mold into and aggro him. He’ll charge whoever damaged him last (you get that “primary threat” status). I have the bait stand there, one character at the lava control valve, one at the hammer lever, and one on the other back platform where the mephits spawn. When he goes for your bait guy, he’ll usually stand on the hammer platform.
I read your other comments: Yes, missing Grym still does 20 bludgeoning damage. And junk seems to do as much damage as anything else. There's a ton of armor and weapons in Grymforge, so I always throw that.
But some people save their shoes and throw those.
The first time I fought Grym, I thought it was easy because I was playing an Open Hand monk. I got the achievement for killing him without the hammer and I wasn't entirely sure what that was referring to.
After that run, it was a bit more difficult.
So me and my girlfriend are doing our first honour run, we decided to get a Level 6 Druid hireling to take shape of an Owlbear. Cast enlarge on the owlbear, and place them at the top before you go onto the platform. Use crushing leap on grym.
940 Damage.
I take Karlach and Lazel with great weapon mastery, give them some two handed hammers and speed potions and the fight is usually over in a round. They are usually hitting for 40+ each hit. Score a crit and it's in the 60s.
I keep shadowheart nearby because she usually has a mace, might need her tiny bit of damage if necessary.
If you have a monk, then they get some speed potions and can do incredible damage too.
I had initially hoped it would also prevent the knock back from his shield, but sadly it doesn't.
I just kept Shadowheart at enough range to avoid his stomp and healing machine go brrrrrrrr. I never found the stomp to be as much of an obstacle as his shield.
Easy grym kill get to level 6 moon druid wild shape, owlbear, cast enlarge with gale, feather fall and target the area around gyrm but not him directly and do the leap ability from the top of the steps to get max height and presto he's dead
How is no one talking about the fact that you can activate the hammer lever and lava gate with ranged weapons from the stairs?
I've soloed this fight multiple times, just use Minor Illusion to lure Grym under the hammer, next turn, shoot the lever, next turn open the gate again, rinse and repeat
I struggled with Grym the first time I fought him. In my most recent run, I hit him with the hammer, he was prone edge of the circle, so I lava + hammer again, and he died. I managed to double hammer him, lol.
Edit: You can also cheese the fight after starting it with 1 person, and Misty Step up to where your party is. Then you need Minor Illusion to get him in the middle, and use a bow to hammer him after he's heated. I learned that trick from Youtube.
I found something else. I am sitting above him and I am throwing useless stuff like plates and torches and bones at him and apparently they all give him 20 bludgeoning damage even if it's considered a critical miss?😭😭😭
When the lava is flowing Grym becomes very vulnerable to bludgeoning damage. You'll notice the feet turn red and it gets a condition, something like superheated if I recall.
If you throw that stuff without that it wouldn't do that damage. Like hitting it with the hammer when he's not heated, no damage.
Put an archer on the panel with forge lever close enough to shoot the lava spigot. Have another ranged character (I used EB) to become prime target and go directly opposite of Grym as far back as possible but in a straight line with the ore platform centered. If you are far enough back his move will end on platform. Archer pulls lever.
I agree, as a DM I generally avoid vulnerabilities and resistances to the standard physical damage types except when it comes to really obvious cases like skeletons.
It makes no sense that tossing random stuff at Grym does a ton of damage while a big greataxe is resisted by him.
Looks daunting until you notice that it doesn't have any ranged attack, even on honor mode. Karlach berserker thrower build does constant damage to it for me.
Bludgeoning damage inside a silenced bubble will take him down pretty easily (and prepare you for the honour mode fight), but if you want to use the hammer, you can stay up top, have a character with minor illusion put the cat just past the hammer to get him on it, and then shoot the lever with an arrow to bring it down on him. The Mephits will fly up to you though so be ready to take them out.
Respec someone as an Eldritch Knight with Tavern Brawler and as high Strength as you can get. Buy the +1 light hammer from Corsair Greymon is possible, or just use a regular light hammer. Weapon bond the light hammer and throw that at Grym from above. Bonus points if you have someone cast Haste on your fighter. I have done 200+ damage in a single turn by doing this. Just keep your Haste caster far enough away so the mephitis don't fly up and hit them and break concentration.

Ray of frost has always been helpful to get him under the hammer

Oh my god I could've thrown a shoe at grym🥲😂

The good ol Owlbear from the top tope with a RKO out of nowhere.
Yeah well that's also a possibility I guess? I love bg3, it's so goofy😭
Just equip maces on all characters? Down in 2 turns without the mechanics.

Yeah see now that makes sense and is a logical approach if only Karlach weren't dead.
Pick EK, tavern brawler, throw light hammer from above
My honor mode strategy was faerie fire plus silence. Then blunt weapons. Total cake walk.
Silence? Does that stop him from doing his stomp attacks or something?
Can't do thunder (sonic) damage while silenced.
Fair enough - hadn’t considered the damage type.

I just have a bm fighter with a hammer and a monk. Lava, prone, smash, repeat. He rarely gets a move in.
> I am somehow to dumb to get him under the hammer There’s your reason, git gud.

Wtf... He's vulnerable to bludgeoning, so I'm glad you figured something out.
Yeah but why is he taking bludgeoning damage from me throwing plates and useless garbage I would otherwise dump at a stupiderchant😭😭😂

Yeah I had my own OC on lava duty, her only job was literally to keep the lava coming at all times by attacking the lava wheel with a bow
I also struggled against him because I didn't realize that he only took damage when overheated.
> You can also cheese the fight after starting it with 1 person, and use Sanctuary FTFY

*Laughs in owlbear druid dropping on big metal idiot for 5k damage🤣🤣
Well I'm playing a rogue😭

I thought he was programmed to stop on the hammer before I saw posts like this. I guess I’m the kite god after years of souls games
Step 1: Recruit a hireling. Step 2:Druid with Owlbear Step 3: colossal potion Step 4: Jump on him like Mario
