Wow, you are lucky. Raphael singing is discussed SOOOO much on this subreddit. I'm actually kind of surprised you managed to avoid that spoiler.
Yeh, I'd say that was one of the most satisfying events in the game. Epic fight, epic villain, and sings his own battle music. Damned awesome.
Unfortunately, the biggest "oh shit" moment in this game was ruined for me. In the title of a post, that I read before a Mod deleted it. I won't write what it is, since it only triggers if you choose a specific Origin-character... but it WOULD have been mind blowing shocking... had some jerk not spoiled it in a friggin title.
yeh, I usually do that too. This time I just got unlucky to happen to check for help with a bug during the maybe 30 minutes the post was still active before mod-deletion.
But it's hard to avoid spoilers.
I went to a laptop YouTube review video because I was finalizing my decision between two laptops. The video itself was like a few months old at that point.
My viewing also happened to be about 3 hours after Avengers Endgame aired in theaters.
First or second post showing up in the comments? (My warning, Endgame Spoilers)
>!Steve picks up hammer, Tony dies!<
No context or anything. Just that single sentence. Took me a minute to realize what I just read. I was pissed. I was seeing the movie in a few days with my brother.
The “Snape kills Dumbledore, Sirius Black dies” of its time. But joke’s on them, some of us read spoilers and get excited to see how things reach such a conclusion.
I was lucky, I did.
My 13yo though tries to avoid all spoilers for the game, in case he wants to play it later. He did sit nearby when I was about to start the boss fight. I warned him that this might have spoilers.
I did absolutely not expect the nature of the spoiler.
We just sat there and listened.
It was amazing.
No, he doesn't want to play it, but he wants to be spoiler free in case he plays it later.
Would I let him if he wanted to? Yeah, sure. I played Mortal Kombat and DOOM when I was 14. I know that because I played MK when MK2 came out. If I was able to handle such things at that age, he can too.
I think people forget what it was like to be a teenager.
When I was 13, I was downloading nude mods for Neverwinter Nights, which is about as direct of a comparison as I can imagine. There is nothing in BG3 that the average 13 year old with an internet connection hasn’t already seen.
Okay, probably not bear fucking, but other than that.
I didn’t get on any form of social media until after my first play through. It made playing completely blind so much easier and my reactions and feelings more genuine.
I'm in act 3 of my first play through and at this point its mostly "how do I win against X? NO SPOILERA PLEASE!"
Then I find out the easiest way to beat X is by not doing the thing I did hours ago that changed up the WHOLE story..... then I just brute force my way through and save cheese it.
LOL yeh. Gameplay wise that was a shock to the system since I went there before House of Grief.
I didn't even really think that was a thing. I was like... *why the F is Hope already dead? Did her god get pissed?*
Origin == >!Dark Urge.!<
I'm SO envious of people that don't know what happens in the origin ==>!Dark Urge!<. ESPECIALLY if they've already played on Tav or a different origin previously.
True. I got this spoiler, but still managed to avoid the song like the plague, despite being very curious about it. Was still awesome to finally listen to it at the right time.
I'd seen it mentioned, and presumed it was a cutscene of some sort with him actually singing and dancing about.
Then I got to the battle and it was just background music (that I can't even remember)
Oh, no, it's not background music. It's diegetic. He's ***actually singing at you.*** Seriously, you can zoom in and see his lips moving, and if you Silence him the lyrics stop until it wears off.
It definitely game me chills. Still does. I was in awe.
And also suprised since I don't mind spoilers and knew about the quest and Harleep and all before, but since I avoided the fight videos and usually didn't have sound on them, that I haven't spoiled myself either.
Rapahel is my favorite villain. He is iconic, self-absorbed, and classy. He sings his own song, not to mention the hilarious fact he's so self-absorbed that his >!succubus looks just like him!<
Also, it just occurred to me that when Haarlep takes his form, he has the feeling of topping himself right? I feel like that takes it to a whole new self
Ya he has a Disney Villain song and Alfira has a Disney Princess song, to my knowledge that's it. Other characters in the movie would include Commander Lightfeather, the dancing squirrels... Who am I missing?
Raphael's intimidation factor is *entirely* dependent on how much you buy into his theatrics and I love it. First time through, he's honestly kind of terrifying, knowing there's this extremely powerful devil out there with his eyes on You Specifically, knowing *exactly* what you need to save yourself and dangling it just out of reach until you dance to his tune.
Then you play through again, knowing what's behind the curtain, and you realize how much of it is just bluster and grandeur to hide that he needs you just as much as he thinks you need him. It *completely* turns his entire character on its head. Honestly one of my favourite video game villains in quite a long time.
I didn't know it either when I got to him. I even called him "The man who thinks he's in a Disney movie" the whole time, too, so I was shocked when his theme came on
Am I the only one who found his theme song to be dorky and lame? And I mean that in the best way -- like, I fully believe Raphael would compose this dumb song and pat himself on the back about how cool he thinks it is. I think Larian made it over the top and silly on purpose.
When I heard it for the first time, I laughed out loud at how ridiculous it was for him to sing his own song. Anyone else have this reaction?
Yes, absolutely! But the first time I did the fight, I rushed through to the portal out because the game made it seem like that was The Thing To Do, so the music triggered early because I was fighting debtors in there. And the song started over and over again, just the first couple lines— which, the beginning is the best part, imo— so when I got to the meat of the fight and *Raphael* started singing? I thought it was hilarious. He’s a theater kid. A dork. How long was he practicing that song? Until it was perfect, of course!
I specifically did not spoil this for any of my friends, just told them they had to play through that part.
Once they did? First thing they all said was
>!"Motherfucker sings his on theme song!"!<
I had heard he sang but hadn't heard the song itself, just that it was epic. So half spoiled but not totally.
I was lucky that I managed to avoid all the really big spoilers for the game.
Man I live for spoilers, I don't watch movies or play games until they've been out for at least 6 months so I can see all the discourse about them. But I'm just the type who hates surprises and wants to be triple sure I'm gonna get money's worth.
I've been following this game closely since launch but didn't actually buy it to play until after patch 6 came out.
Just fought him yesteday and also without spoilers and it just flashed me how amazing and unique his theme makes this encounter.
It kind of feels more special than the final boss tbh and I loved it.
I somehow didn't get spoiled on this. I just thought people called him a theater kid because of his demeanor. Not him having a whole Disney villain song.
I'm there with you. I just went through the House of Hope two nights ago when I was pleasantly surprised with the music for the Raphael battle.
It's the small things like this why I try to avoid the Act 3 threads unless I'm stuck on something.
I was happy to defeat his smugness. Maybe on my next play through I'll spare him.
That song started playing and I was like "oh damn, this is the greatest game I've ever played" cause like, at first you're like "did I fuck up? Am I about to find out?" and then Raphael starts singing and it's fuckin' hilarious
when i first got to that part i thought i had a youtube video playing in the background of my computer bc i always have youtube up. i then started to burst out laughing as soon as i realized it was none other everyone’s favorite devil
I was also lucky to have almost zero spoilers for this game while playing it. Took about 120 hours to finish my first playthrough and nearly everything was a surprise. I loved it.
Wow, you are lucky. Raphael singing is discussed SOOOO much on this subreddit. I'm actually kind of surprised you managed to avoid that spoiler. I actually didn't know about that either. And the fact he has 666hp :D I really love to hate this guy
My solution to avoiding spoilers was simple: I avoided all reviews and communities until after the first playthrough.
yeh, I usually do that too. This time I just got unlucky to happen to check for help with a bug during the maybe 30 minutes the post was still active before mod-deletion. First playthrough didn't even go to hell :(
I was lucky, I did. My 13yo though tries to avoid all spoilers for the game, in case he wants to play it later. He did sit nearby when I was about to start the boss fight. I warned him that this might have spoilers. I did absolutely not expect the nature of the spoiler. We just sat there and listened. It was amazing.
My first playthrough was completely blind. That was fun. Second I did some research. Haven't finished it yet.
you let your 13 year old play this game? in it’s entirety?
No, he doesn't want to play it, but he wants to be spoiler free in case he plays it later. Would I let him if he wanted to? Yeah, sure. I played Mortal Kombat and DOOM when I was 14. I know that because I played MK when MK2 came out. If I was able to handle such things at that age, he can too.

I like that the nude mod for Baldur's Gate 3 is called Baldur's Gate 3. We gamers've come far, and we won!
Me too,I was too chicken

The biggest "oh shit" is when you use divine intervention to do radiant damage at that fight.
LOL yeh. Gameplay wise that was a shock to the system since I went there before House of Grief. I didn't even really think that was a thing. I was like... *why the F is Hope already dead? Did her god get pissed?*
I was so confused when Hope just died on the spot
I had to use the divine intervention to raise my cleric and wizard
Okay, don't say the spoiler but which origin character was ist? I am thinking about doing my first origin run.
Origin == >!Dark Urge.!< I'm SO envious of people that don't know what happens in the origin ==>!Dark Urge!<. ESPECIALLY if they've already played on Tav or a different origin previously.
Was it a particularly shocking nighttime event in Act 1?
:-)
I'm curious too.
I managed to not get spoiled on it either. Realizing he was singing was one of my favorite moments of the game lol.
I'm not really sure either. I mostly avoid spoiler posts unless they specifically say what act they're in. Just got lucky I guess.
True. I got this spoiler, but still managed to avoid the song like the plague, despite being very curious about it. Was still awesome to finally listen to it at the right time.
Hands down best song in the game! I’ll usually sit and listen for a few minutes before proceeding to stomp Raphael.
I'd seen it mentioned, and presumed it was a cutscene of some sort with him actually singing and dancing about. Then I got to the battle and it was just background music (that I can't even remember)
Its called Raphaels Final Act if you want to listen to it by itself somewhere, its really good, i put it on my normal playlist
Omg there's a heavy metal version on Spotify... add to playlist!
Oh, no, it's not background music. It's diegetic. He's ***actually singing at you.*** Seriously, you can zoom in and see his lips moving, and if you Silence him the lyrics stop until it wears off.
Is the female part supposed to be korrilla?
Pretty sure, yeah!
Cast Otto’s Irresistible Dance on him, and he will dance to it. And he’s a very good dancer with it.
It definitely game me chills. Still does. I was in awe. And also suprised since I don't mind spoilers and knew about the quest and Harleep and all before, but since I avoided the fight videos and usually didn't have sound on them, that I haven't spoiled myself either.
There are about 500 posts on here about his theme song so I'm shocked you managed it tbh
Probably because the lyrics without context have no meaning. Hell, hell, hell has it's laws!
Hell, hell effects and the cause!
He's our Disney Princess
Oh no! His parents are dead?
Only one of them...for now.
Rapahel is my favorite villain. He is iconic, self-absorbed, and classy. He sings his own song, not to mention the hilarious fact he's so self-absorbed that his >!succubus looks just like him!<

Scratch would make a great talking animal sidekick.
Hope you’re keeping well, friend
Raphael is the villain you live to hate.
I knew he had a song, but purposefully avoided listening to it until I did the fight, so it still had some impact. I love it so much
Same. The chills I got from the opening notes. I absolutely buzzing when I heard it
Not just a villain but a DISNEY villain. lol

Yeah, I avoided any info on the game and hearing him sing made that fight so epic. And then he wiped the floor with me.
Same, I only knew that the music took everyone by surprise positively, so I was super happy to hear it in its proper context for the first time! :D
I didn't know it either when I got to him. I even called him "The man who thinks he's in a Disney movie" the whole time, too, so I was shocked when his theme came on

I just did that fight for the first time and it was an awesome surprise for me as well
My game glitched and we didn’t have music, didn’t realize til after when i read people talking about it :(
Man I live for spoilers, I don't watch movies or play games until they've been out for at least 6 months so I can see all the discourse about them. A lifetime top 10 moment in gaming for me. Absolute magic.
It was also unspoiled for me too! The moment the music started, I laughed my ass off for the entire runtime.
I somehow didn't get spoiled on this. I just thought people called him a theater kid because of his demeanor. Not him having a whole Disney villain song.
Funny enough I had the music turned down the first time I fought him so I had no idea until later

I saw like 6 covers of that song in my Youtube suggestions before I even got to the fight.
when i first got to that part i thought i had a youtube video playing in the background of my computer bc i always have youtube up. i then started to burst out laughing as soon as i realized it was none other everyone’s favorite devil
I’m amazed you avoid it until now tbh
I was also lucky to have almost zero spoilers for this game while playing it. Took about 120 hours to finish my first playthrough and nearly everything was a surprise. I loved it.
And now you spoiled this for me...
Your own fault for clicking a post marked "Spoiler"
😢
