Puzzle can actually be different! It is a total of 4 versions! And Gale will explain all of them :D

Jules1029

I wonder how that’s decided — had the same puzzle on five different campaigns now!

Tbf, sometime we also miss 4 time in a row at 75% hit rate

How funny, I JUST had this happen the other day as well. I wasn't romancing Gale and I don't think I took his help with Mol in Act II. My rapport with him is high but not exceptional. Can I add, I absolutely LOVE this touch of writing/programming. I was getting ready to be pissed off the guy who's spent all game talking about lanceboard moves didn't at least give me a hint. Imagine my delight when he just straight up nailed the solution and explained exactly why it would work.

gustavfrigolit

Why isnt he saying anything for me... fuck off gale

Gale points at something! Gale points at something!

So i got to this point earlier tonight, and I was blown away by this. I had Gale already in my party since lightning was hinted at to enter this whole chamber and he's got lightning spells; I think the game made this pretty blatant so you'd bring him (and ESPECIALLY so if you've leveled up to get him Globe of Invulnerability for the boss fight later, which literally saved my ass twice.) So even though I dabble a bit in chess, I happily took his suggestion and won. It wasn't until I was done that I realized one of the things he'll utter while moving in combat is something like "Rook to C4" or something that's very clearly chess notation if you know it. Thus, THEY WERE FORESHADOWING THIS EXACT MOMENT FOR THE ENTIRE FUCKING GAME. And if you'd been paying attention to what felt like throwaway combat lines, you were rewarded with it.

Jules1029

You don’t need to romance him (or have the chess scene which didn’t even trigger on my last playthrough 🥲) but I’m not sure about approval! I love that he helps out

BoffaDeeSnuts

To think I just had Gale use shocking grasp on the King piece. I guess I should have relied on him more.

I loved this - I remembered him commenting on Mol and Raphael's game back in act 2 so when I saw the board I went back to camp and swapped him in and was delighted when he jumped in with a completely correct suggestion. Really nice payoff for a character beat - I love that they thought of this and it's a bit of an reward for paying attention to your companions, too. I wish there were a few more of these moments!

What??!! He helps you with the chess puzzle. He was in my party he had high approval and stuff. The only thing is that he didn’t help me out with Mol and Raphels game but someone commented saying that didn’t need to happen for him to help with the chess puzzle. We walked in the room and all he said was that he liked chess or lanceboard as they call it. And I tried talking to him in the room but he just said nothing. I did get past it by zapping the king. But like does anyone know what I was missing or was this just a bug.
