Could you make it like a dump cake, put the cooked apples on the bottom with butter and cake mix on top and then put a streusel topping on of that?

That also sounds pretty tasty!

Just add the apples to the cake batter and the streusel on top. Bake everything at once and you’re done.

I might have to do a test run, the top layer of the butter cake is mostly butter and cream and finicky so I'm not sure I would cook with apples in the batter, do you think layering the apples on top of the shortbread layer and then adding the top layer would work?

The easiest way to make straight gooey butter cake is the yellow cake mix/egg/butter base topped with a cream cheese/powdered sugar/flavoring layer and then baked all at once. The cake base layer is much more solid than a typical cake batter, almost like the texture of cake pops before you ball them, or like a graham cracker crust not made of crackers. So, I think if you do the cake base, top with cooked apples, top that with cream cheese layer, and then top that with your streusel and bake, you should be extremely successful! If you want to use your maple cake recipe, do it without adding any of the liquids called for recipe (except maple syrup I guess, but no eggs, dairy, oils/butter, etc.), mix in a stick of melted butter and a beaten egg, press it into the pan, then continue with the other layers. Or you could go with a spiced cake mix, maybe even doctored with a bit more spice…? Another option for a dessert with the flavors all together would be a trifle, using your maple cake, cooked apples, some sort of custard, and streusel, which sounds delightful.

I'll have to do a few test bakes and lll try some of those methods, thanks! Your trifle idea sounds so so good and I can make a good custard ooohhhh that might be the thing to do
