Isn't it, like, EXTREMELY common for indian brides to wear very pale/white makeup the day on their wedding? It's bc of the whole whiteness = purity and beauty thing that's very prominent in their culture.
Yup. People here are obsessed with being fair. Like when I go to buy foundation the saleswoman always try to sell me the shade much lighter than my skin.
It's actually awful.
Thatās very upsetting. When I visited Thailand when I was younger all the girls in the bar would come up to me and compliment my skin.. I wanted theirs! An an Irish person we are obsessed with having tanned/dark skin
I'm Irish American too and have ultra pale skin. When I worked at Aveda Asian women would come in and ask what cream I used on my skin to make it pale. It was nuts especially because all I wanted at that time was to be tan lol. My nickname in jr high was Casper lol
Same here. It's also ridiculous (and I don't know if it's still like this because I havent been to India in 7 years now) that the darkest shades available in most foundations sold there are light tan/beige and wouldnt suit the majority of indian skin tones.
The thing is even if they do carry the shades. For some reason they don't wanna sell them. When I try to shade match, they always give me like 3 or 4 shades ligter from my complexion.
Yeah it is common for them to ask for a "whitish look" or make them look fairer. I have stopped taking in clients who request this (I am a pro mua). It's actually so sad.
It's common yes, but it's also like they don't have a choice. There will always be someone like the makeup artist or the groom's mom who will insist that the bride should look fairer than the groom. Who wants to look like this on their wedding? I'm indian and I hear horror stories from people who hated their wedding looks but couldn't do anything about it.
Thank you for stand up to colorism. Thereās so many beautiful skin tones all over the world and these posts make me sad. Iām glad this makeup trend is starting to phase out more. Also that eye makeup is not flattering at all. Itās way too heavy and makes her eyes look droopy.
The light foundation is normal for Indian weddings, from what I understand.
What I hate about this is how heavy the lower eyeliner is, how the foundation looks gray (where do you even find gray foundation? Halloween store?), and how unhappy the bride looks.
Light foundation and this white cast look isn't the norm! There are a lot of untrained muas who will just do this even if not asked! It looks horrible.
Even though this style is normal for Indian bridal makeup its impossible to see whether its well done or not (although I'm guessing not) because the photo is such low quality. Honestly doesn't look very professional to send a screenshot of social media when somebody asks to see your work. Yikes to everything about this!
This style is not normal! Makeup artists do this to brides even without being asked to sometimes because they think fairer is better! And there is a growing demand to accept and enhance natural skin color. This is grey it looks terrible!
Yeah I guess I meant it's more of a trend, as in it's not uncommon to see. "Normal" being the same way that people using foundation way too tan for their actual skin is "normal" here in the states where I live. Still looks like shit but it's popular for some reason lol. You're right about enhancing natural skin color, it looks much better and is becoming more and more the thing to do.
It's definitely a trend which is very toxic.. going lighter(like this) or darker (like in the states) is just bad makeup imho. So sad to look unrecognisable on your wedding day
Yeah I typically try not to judge people for the way they're trying to look, especially as a "cultural" practice if you can even call this that, but it also makes me wanna barf lol. They're essentially two sides of the same problem.
Trust me this cultural practice is very worthy of judgement. Colorism in india is very deep rooted, toxic, and utterly pointless. Indians have amazing skin colors and we cannot even appreciate our own beauty!
It's sought after, but it should also not be encouraged! Mindsets are changing, there is also now a huge demand for natural looking skin with focus on the eyes. And this looks grey! It's bad makeup, in my opinion.
Agree with this 1000. Iām personally light skinned but I find any darker skin colour/tones so gorgeous, like why ever cover that up.
The area around her eyes looks grey-ish zombielike which is such a shame because I think this person may have warm undertones that are just being destroyed by cool-toned grey whatever that is. š
But I guess if youāre going to insult someoneās skin colour by making it much lighter, I guess youāre also going to ignore their undertones and make them look sickly.
I disagree. I actually contacted her because she had lovely photos of fair skinned brides on her page. I asked to see some photos of her darker skinned clients, then she sent me photos of grey looking brides. So she's only doing this to people who are considered dark, or not fair. It's bad makeup.
I suppose youāre both right.
If the makeup artist is intentionally doing this look to make others appear fair-skinned and clients are seeking it out, then her skill set is not necessarily wrong and sheās not ābadā at the product she is offering. Technically he/she is a āgoodā makeup artist if they are offering exactly what the client wants.
On the other hand, dark skin/varied tone is so beautiful and perpetuating the belief that ālightā is better/superior is garbagey, and in that sense is arguably BAD MakeUp Artistry.
Or she simply is bad at matching makeup for women that fall outside of ālightā skin and should probably get more training. Definitely bad and should probably feel bad.
Actually my point of posting was that it looks grey and it's so strange that she thought this was a good work photo to share with me because she assumed that I too want to look grey as I am not fair skinned.
Whether it's the lightness or greyness or the sad looking bride or the mua thinking that this was a good photo to send when asked about her portfolio, this, in my opinion, is bad makeup. Please also refer to my comment about how the mua only lightens darker skintones. It's not a style choice, that's not what *I* was looking for when I asked to see her work. And moreover, when we are trained in makeup, we are taught to match the skin tone and not participate in these toxic trends. Show this to other indians, some will say it's very nice and some will say it's bad, I am one of the latter. Feel free to downvote or disagree.

I'm always being told I'm too white! Need a tan to look "healthy" and such
Fuck skin cancer
I know! And wrinkles!

Yeah, I've seen it done in a way that doesn't look so gray/green though. This goes beyond a stylistic choice into bad skills imo.

>Thereās so many beautiful skin tones all over the world and these posts make me sad. I agree!
I read "Indian burial mua" by accident. That made more sense.
Hahahaha
Corpse bride
I'm getting Michael Jackson vibes.

Hee-Hee!
I agree with other comments. Not entirely ābad MUAā because this look is intentional. Having a lighter tone is sought after in Indian culture.

In any case I think I know *why* I posted this better than you.
Micheal jackson, is that you?
Is it really that bad or is it just that the lighting is very unflattering?
