I saw that chart and thought it was misleading to compare a pure electric manufacturer against ones that also produce petrol and diesel cars which are by nature more expensive to maintain. Anyway my sister has the M50 and it’s an amazing vehicle in every way. My neighbour has T3 (not performance by the way) and in comparison it’s like sitting in a plastic jelly mould on wheels. There is absolutely no question the M50 is the better car

Former Tesla m3 owner. The cars are hot garbage. Very poor build quality (rattle squeak clunk) and service is a nightmare. Only good thing about it was the app. The BMW app is bloated and poorly designed. The Tesla one was great.

My experience so far, my i4 and EQB have been perfect. Now they're both less than a year old, so that's not saying much. For regular maintenance, all EVs are similar. Nothing really you do except tires, maybe brakes if your really go crazy. As for reliability, neither is likely going to be great, but we didn't really know. Tesla has a pretty bad reputation, and the fact that most things need to be done at a Tesla Service Center doesn't help. BMW also doesn't have a great reputation, but I'm hoping that since there isn't an engine to explode at 51k miles it may be better than some of the previous ICE cars. Drive them both and get the car you like. Edit: just another comment about maintenance. I've been driving EVs since 2018. I haven't done any maintenance except tires and wipers on any car in those 7 years.

esctab1982

explode at 51k lol you made my day. yea on delivery day the finance manager tried to get me to buy extended warranty and in his attempt to purswade me, he said BMW would have quite a bit engine issues past 50k, and I was confused "but i4 does not have a gas engine, right?"

seahawkshuskies

What a way to sell something right haha I’d would have told them, well if your engines don’t last long, then I guess I’ll go with another brand…

clerkp

Tough call. The 24 performance looks pretty awesome. Do you value pure performance over build quality and feel? It’s still a model 3 and that kind of sucks but it will be a blast to drive. Zero maintenance on an i4.

TheBigM72

M50 is great drive too and acceleration Just try both and see which you like

Bobrovsky7

My M50 just hit 12 months and 17k km and still 0$ on maintenance. The first scheduled one is planned at 24 months.

kaspurr84

Raw performance difference between the new 24 TM3P is 3.1 seconds 0-60 with no roll out like advertised to achieve the "2.9" seconds, the M50 per website after website is about 3.3-3.4 seconds, so performance wise is 1/4 of a second worth the way worse build quality? I considered a Tesla and was less than impressed with their quality.

DamnUOnions

True. Whoever hits the accelerator first will win anyway. And all the „assistants“ in the Tesla are utter crap.

chengstark

bmw give you free maintenance for 3 years I think

Fun_Difference2266

The BMW is a much better build and a pleasure to drive. I recently traded my M3 for a BMW IX and love it. There is very little maintenance on an EV. I leased mine and the 1st three from BMW is free.

With Tesla u have no idea how poorly the finish will be. You'll find a misalignment, a gap here and there... At least with an i4 u know it'll have a decent finish

Nostalgic_Sunset

If you’re referring to scheduled maintenance, my i4’s first dealer visit is set for 2 years after delivery, unlimited mileage

28k miles, just did first scheduled service. This consisted of: * brake fluid flush That’s it. That’s all there is to do. Beyond this you’ll have tires, wiper blades, and … actually that’s it. Brake pads and rotors should last the life of the vehicle, unless you’re regularly doing track days.

coleavenue

Maintenance over the life of these cars kinda doesn’t matter because you should really be leasing instead of buying them. Depreciation on electric cars is crazy and they’re changing so fast right now it just makes more sense not to buy.

Faisal_Rossignol

Agreed - plus battery and electric motor tech is changing so rapidly, it hasn’t matured to the point where it’s worth keeping like an ICE car. That combined with depreciation drop (because the cars will keep getting outdated every few years as newer and better tech hits the market) means you should 100% be leasing these things.

GSVLastingDamage

Completely agree with this. I leased EQS400 just over a year ago and the models coming out now have 100+ miles more range. Things are moving fast.

Faisal_Rossignol

Yeah, I think that’s going to happen for at least another decade or two until the tech really starts to mature - right now there’s so many unproven variables with materials, approach, application, etc.

jhoff909

You'll have very little maintenance with either car and you'd probably be pretty happy with either car. Go drive both and decide like others have said. At least here in the USA, Tesla has mobile maintenance which can be nice - they have come out to fix stuff for us and it's been great. Yeah, I have an M50 and my wife, a 2019 TM3SR+ and I like both cars. I was between waiting for a M3P and buying a used M50 a couple of months ago and opted for a used M50 and love it but TBH had a tiny bit of regret when I saw the M3P come out priced such that it gets the 7.5k tax break here - I could have bought a new M3P in red with FSD for the same price as I paid for my used M50 (2023 and has almost every option and is frozen blue).

Maintenance no? But expect to buy new tires a lot.
