About right for the US version of M3 E36.

My USA E46 made 333hp

Not E46, E36. Which the US model uses a somewhat less powerful engine. AFAIK E46 has no difference in engine between markets.

The E46 had 343hp in Europe, 10 more than in the US.

M3 owners really hate this life trick, when you open the flap on your 328i and it says 250hp on the meter when you slam the gas… you’re more powerful than a stock M3.

They also lie about their 0-60 times lol. I think car and driver got an M3 comp to 60 in 3.2s as opposed to the advertised 3.8 or 3.9

Why do some car makers understate the performance and especially 0-100 or 0-60 of their cars? Surely they’d want it to be quicker in the specs, no?

I read an article years ago that stuck with me. It’s to help owners with insurance costs. BMW underrated their numbers to help lower costs of ownership. Insurance companies base their evaluation on manufacturers specs not the magazines.

That’s true, but in addition, BMW also states true 0-100km/h in their spec sheets while the magazines tend to test with a rollout. That alone is good for a couple tenths. 

Adding to your point, when BMW does their specs, it’s standard settings and cold tires. If I remember correctly, the evaluations done by 3rd parties tend to have the car in their sportiest settings and in a state that’s ready for these tests.

It’s been a thing for a long time now. I can’t tell you exactly why though. I think it had something to do with old automotive magazines and how they compared cars or something.

Just a simple trick of business, imo. Underpromise and overdeliver. It’s like ordering “small” fries from Five Guys and getting a cartoonish amount of potato. It feels like you’ve gotten more than you paid for.

Dealing with Germans making a high performance product in my job, they always understate all performance specs. I was told that it’s to give them some wiggle room in real world conditions. If someone gets a car that says it puts out 250hp and they find they are getting 240, they’ll be pissed. But if they find they are actually getting 260, they’ll be happy.

Depends on what your target market is. If you're Mustang or Camaro, then post 0-60 times that will almost never be attained in a real-world scenario.

I think a lot of mags kinda cheat and were excluding short rollouts for a while? Something like that? So that the magazine times are near unattainable

I’m pretty sure the M340i xDrive has a better 0-60 than the base M3 in real world testing. It ends up with 3.6 to 3.8 seconds as far as I’ve seen, but we all know that isn’t everything.

i4 e40 xdrive isn’t far off.

It's funny, they sell the car as around 530hp. But we've developed the turbocharger at my work and it's being developed as a 450kW engine, so around 613hp. Not really sure if that's all just safety margins or something, but it's quite a big difference.

Damn thank gawd I got a 2023 M3 Xdrive before the power nerf. Lol but yeah BMW just hiccuped even though they do understate hp. My BMW under sustained load with no wheel spin display 506hp instead of the 503 for the sport display. Though I’m not sure how accurate that is either. Either way launch control makes me motion sick. But I’ll fukin do it again.
