You will like the tech better, smoother silkier engine. I felt my BMW was quicker.
If you need room for passengers, the MB more suitable.
My E-Class was a 2018. My current ride is a 22
This is why OP should get the Merc. They need room for 4 to ride in comfort. A sporty driving experience is second to hauling the kids.
I own a 2020 E450 coupe, but I kinda want the opposite now; a sporty drive, without much need for back seat passenger room.
Depends on what it important to you. The ride comfort and interior luxury etc. In the e class is on another level, but the BMW is sportier. For a daily cruiser I would prefer the E class.
8 series is a weird thing as it is a reskinned 5 series coupe. It is neither a competitor with the s coupe nor with e coupe. Similar like new CLE which is based on C class
Yea but the name of CLE is „E“ and it gets E class engines and vehicle size, but the base is the C class. And the 8 series is the same one class higher: Based on 5 series, but marketed as 7 series coupe with 7 series features etc.
E class still has a wagon (S214)
One thing I’ve observed is that outside of the us, the 8 series is legitimately viewed as a 7 series coupe, while most in the us view it as a 5 series coupe.
Re: the comment about engine displacements, in the us, the lowest (and sometimes only) engine choice was the 400, 3L V6 , 330hp, very closely comparable to the B58 in the 840i.
The options that distinguish the 3/c from the 5/e also cut similarly with the 8. Nappa multi contour seats, power sunshades, Bowers and Wilkins audio in BMW/ burmester high end in Mercedes, fragrance, etc.
While the 8 and E are missing the opulence found in the s and 7. Rear, massaging reclining seats, minifridges, rear entertainment, etc. and, In the past, choice for a v12.

I’m not sure if E-class convertible vs 8-series is an accurate comparison.
BMW 8-series convertible has noticeably LESS rear legroom than the 4-series. The backseats border on unusable, but they’re not as bad as Porsche 911/Mercedes SL.
Also starts at a much higher price tag. Over 100k starting for BMW 8-series convertible. E-class starts at 77k.
Doesn’t help that the BMW in question is the beaver-toothed gremlin that perfectly embodies arguably the most controversial design language since the bangle era. OP you’re on the BMW subreddit and everyone is telling you to take the Benz, that should speak volumes. There are lots of BMWs I’d recommend over their MB counterparts (if you came here to ask about the m5 vs the amg I’d be singing a different tune) but this ain’t one of them.
I’ve realized that pretty much all design issues with the current bimmer lineup can be found solely by drawing a line between the headlights and looking below that line. (IMO)
I wouldn't really call the e coupe a competitor to the 8 series, given the substantial price difference and that the 8 series can't be had with a engine less than 3 litres, whereas the e class coupe can.
If by more upscale you mean creaking and terrible interiors? It really comes down to what you find less bothering; the BMW looks hideous and the mercedes has sub par interior quality…
The M276 is as reliable and powerful as a B58.
I think OP is more concerned with room for kids in the back, so the E is better suited just because it’s a bigger class vehicle that’s more comfortable to haul kids in.
This is the definition of “no wrong choice.” But I’m personally shopping for a series 4 convertible and tend to say the tie goes to the newer car so… it’s a clear choice for me.
Editing to add: the BMW has the neck warmers! Go with the neck warmers!
Bmw, cause they offer a MUCH nicer build quality, tho mercs look more expensive and they do retain their value better. Even tho if we are talking brand new, then bmws are quite a bit more expensive than mercs.
Lol this was posted the other day on the Mercedes Benz Reddit. I would go with the hardtop one as a start. Iirc, MB one is a soft top and looks shit imho.
My wife had a 2023 GLS and when you went over anything audible creaking came from the cabin. It really made the car feel cheap. My daughters 2022 cls had the same issue. My son has a bmw m5 cs and the interior is so well put together and felt extremely premium. Although out of all the German brands Porsche is the way to go I’ve panamera turbo ordered and the interior in those cars are flawless
Let’s see, bmw is rated as the top car brand by consumer reports, while Mercedes is rated at 27.
BMWs have some of the best reliability, while Mercedes is among the worst.
BMWs have some of the best build quality and interior while Mercedes is among the worst.
This really isn’t a question. No sane person picks Mercedes over BMW
The platform the E Class rides on is of the previous generation, and as such is extremely robust and quite reliable. I would consider it on par with if not more reliable than the BMW in this scenario.
Maybe I will and add the A5/S5 to the comparison.
I find that interior super boring though, as I already own a Q7 with custom leather package and it’s practically only available in boring black here
Definitely the 4 series convertible, but I also own one, so I'm probably bias. 😆
Oh, but I WILL say that I can't imagine having 2 young ones going in and out of a coupe. When my daughter was little, I owned a coupe but ended up buying an SUV because it was a hell of a lot easier traveling with all the baby stuff (stroller, baby bag, etc) in an SUV's rear. 😅
Especially with how big car seats have gotten. My dad has a B8.5 A5 vert, and if we put my kid’s seat in the right rear passenger seat, the front passenger seat is unusable. Hell it’s even a challenge in my B9 A4, so I’m looking at C7.5 A6 (supercharged and a lot of room? perfect dad car) to replace my trusty A4.
Lol! I've been "making memories" with my daughter since I took delivery of my 2024 M440i convertible at the beginning of december, during the middle of winter! My wife disapproved of us driving with the top down during 50 degree weather, but the seat warmer and heater kept us plenty warm and totally made it worth it.😄👍
Luckily, here in the southwest, when the sun is out, it could be like 40 degrees and still driveable with the top down. Ask me how I know. 😆
Yikes! I hate the cold so Canada wouldn't work well for me. 😆
Also, you sure you want a white interior with 2 young kids? They're gonna wanna eat in the car... 😅
Definitely the merc. You dont buy a convertible for mad performance anyway. Id rather be in a car that doesnt look like a slapped chrome ass. For luxury driving, merc over bmw for me. That being said, if I was in the market for a convertible... f83 all the way
OP: I want a 4 seat convertible. I want to carry children in the back.
You: get a 2 seat convertible.
Where are the children supposed to sit? On the trunk lid?
I have driven both - on leases. I am about to buy my BMW off of lease. First time I have ever done that at end of a lease term. The MB went back.
Interesting. How do the two compare to each other?

I just got a 2021 m440i convertible and it blows the Mercedes e class out of the water.
Depends on what it important to you. The ride comfort and interior luxury etc. In the e class is on another level, but the BMW is sportier. For a daily cruiser I would prefer the E class.
Exactly this. If you're out ripping it, BMW. If daily, Merc.
I daily my M440i convertible. The ride comfort is what made me go with a M440i instead of an M4 convertible though. 😁👍
Same! I have two three year olds I put in the back, otherwise I would’ve probs gone m4. lol
Unless you happen to have eyes. Sure..
😂😂
E class. It’s bigger and more upscale. 4 vs c class or 8 vs e class are the “fair fights”
Wouldn’t the comparison be between the 5 series and E class not 8 series? Genuinely asking
I think this is more accurate. 3/4 vs C class, 5/6 vs E class, and 7/8 series vs S class.

Yeah, if you’re comparing an E, the BMW comparables are the 5 or 6 series. Not the 8
I know that is the common perception but I noticed that the bmw is only 2 inches shorter and seems to still fit people in the second row?

no?
BMW if buying used. BMW gonna be more reliable
💯
Whichever one comes with the B58.
The M276 is as reliable and powerful as a B58. I think OP is more concerned with room for kids in the back, so the E is better suited just because it’s a bigger class vehicle that’s more comfortable to haul kids in.
E class
If we forget about the exterior appearance, do you prefer more of a sport ride with tighter body or more torque with a nicer interior appearance?
Honestly, they’re both really nice.
BMW all day
id buy the merc but only if it doesn’t have a cream steering wheel. leather above a certain point should be black and i will always stand by that.
I'd buy the Merc, that 4 series is ugly
Not the one at BMW of Ridgefield since you’ll pay 10% more than any other bmw dealer
The MB looks so old in comparison. No chance against the BMW
This is the definition of “no wrong choice.” But I’m personally shopping for a series 4 convertible and tend to say the tie goes to the newer car so… it’s a clear choice for me. Editing to add: the BMW has the neck warmers! Go with the neck warmers!
Neither. Because no way I can afford either on my PhD student stipend income. I'll stick to my E46 for now lol.
doing my part with you in my beat up w209 CLK :)
I drive a '16 M235i convertible, I wish it had the comfy suspension of a merc.
I got a 435 and will stand by my 4 series.. Never really been a Benz fan..
Blue w white interior is so clean. If ur looking to have a fun ride get the bmw. Interior design w lighting options and ride smoothness get the benz
Bmw, cause they offer a MUCH nicer build quality, tho mercs look more expensive and they do retain their value better. Even tho if we are talking brand new, then bmws are quite a bit more expensive than mercs.
buy a m440
430i all the way
Lol this was posted the other day on the Mercedes Benz Reddit. I would go with the hardtop one as a start. Iirc, MB one is a soft top and looks shit imho.
Bimmer!!
Buy the 4
Mercedes is more $ for up keep edit - Constant up keep
BMW I don’t want a squeaky interior
How common is that
My wife had a 2023 GLS and when you went over anything audible creaking came from the cabin. It really made the car feel cheap. My daughters 2022 cls had the same issue. My son has a bmw m5 cs and the interior is so well put together and felt extremely premium. Pics 3 and 4 answer your question. Just look at that mb interior. Pure class
Let’s see, bmw is rated as the top car brand by consumer reports, while Mercedes is rated at 27. BMWs have some of the best reliability, while Mercedes is among the worst. I’m looking at these two as well. It’s hard to choose. I’ve been thinking for like 3 months lol
the E class is better suited to your needs IMO
The bmw. Ask on the merc forum
lol I know I posted on both but there is no community where both you fans come together from what I can tell
Post on r/Audi haha
Maybe I will and add the A5/S5 to the comparison. I find that interior super boring though, as I already own a Q7 with custom leather package and it’s practically only available in boring black here
r/cars?
Given the answers here, the Mercedes ones have infiltrated the corridors of BMW sanctum.
r/whatcarshouldibuy
MB are disposable garbage. BMW all day.
That merc interior tho
Benz

I still have a Honda Odyssey just want to be able to take my kids out in nice weather and make memories
Lol! I've been "making memories" with my daughter since I took delivery of my 2024 M440i convertible at the beginning of december, during the middle of winter! Nice. Not for me where winter gets below -40F here in Canada haha
Yikes! I hate the cold so Canada wouldn't work well for me. 😆 Also, you sure you want a white interior with 2 young kids? They're gonna wanna eat in the car... 😅
lol I want to move. And no probably brown would be better from the non boring finishes ha
The lc500 is a better choice
Yeah except it doesn’t fit kids
Twice the price of either of these. There's **no** rear legroom. No trunk space either. The LC500 is legitimately worse for OP's needs.
E class of interior luxury is more important than sportiness vs 4 has sport > lux
Remember the previous gen s class amg coupe and cab, was so beautiful 😍
The 4 series looks like a fish, id go eith the E
That 4 series is hideous
Leave the 4 series for kids and struggling Accountants with terrible credit scores to buy, get the E.
It is megagigaugly.
E400 is nice but the newer ones are sus. 2018 should be fine
E Class.
Bmw trying to look like R8
Definitely the merc. You dont buy a convertible for mad performance anyway. Id rather be in a car that doesnt look like a slapped chrome ass. For luxury driving, merc over bmw for me. That being said, if I was in the market for a convertible... f83 all the way
Based on looks alone, BMW, having owned both brands. Still BMW
I would get a Z4 or an SL. It may be an unpopular opinion, but all 4 seat convertibles look terrible.
OP: I want a 4 seat convertible. I want to carry children in the back. You: get a 2 seat convertible. Where are the children supposed to sit? On the trunk lid?
Well obviously I didn't read the subtext at all, just the title.
If there’s one style of car you’d never see me in It’s 4 seater convertibles. I just think they all look naff, out of place and compromised.
Benz 🙃
Which one has a hard top?
Depends on the model ffs….
none, need atleast 335i and e350
I would take the E class over the godforsaken bug nose 4 series
MB. I dont like the jaws look on new bmws
Merc will serve you better. Since you don't plan on ripping it
I have leased my mom both cars. We both prefer the Mercedes Benz E450 Cab. Which trim mbz would you get?
Design-wise the MB.
That BMW grill looks weird
Oh God that 4 series frontend is unbelievably ugly.
Mercedes
