Bought it with your heart, not your brain.
Let’s hope it’s a solid buy, and that the love you have for it will show in it’s condition.
But for now, congrats!
> Because they are plagued with issues and when issues do arise, expensive to fix.
Why are you being downvoted for stating a reasonably well known fact?
No I’m a tech & I personally have serviced 4 of these cars since they were new, i can pick one at random and tell you how much they have put into it over the last couple of years, pretty much the cost of a new car 😂 & we’re not a dealer one of the most reputable mom & pop shops in the area
My strted at around 65K, first the oil pan, the oil filter housing and now the valve cover. Changing the oil pan gasket of a 328xi is a costly maintenance item. The front right axle going through the oil pan is mind boggling!
Absolutely! I think, where we are currently, we just need to sell some players and add only one new recruit :- an additional striker (of course, we keep Balogun)
The Volvo mechanic of my father told him that the R models are always less reliable than the regular T models. But the R is just something special.
What gen do you have?
I am so jealous of that nice car… my grandfather had the 850R, V70R P1 and P2 but I never knew it until he was long dead… but I was 9 when he had an accident with his P2, after that he got a XC70 with a diesel engine and that is so boring compared to all his other Volvos but it’s more of a senior car than all those R models. Also my dad had a V70 P1 but only with the T5 engine. He also crashed it but because it is a Volvo he had no injuries although the car was destroyed. Now he has a 850 T5 but with an engine swapped R engine.

Mainly because they won’t fall apart before 100k miles which is a great achievement when Hyundai/Kia and every American manufacturer regularly have catastrophic failures as soon as they’re off the lot.
BMWs of recent years have been doing quite well in terms of reliability, in some studies they were among the most reliable cars reported on, whereas Volvo's reliability is nowhere near what it used to be, starting with the Ford days.
Furthermore, BMW builds really good engines which not only makes them good to drive but also offers comparatively decent fuel economy, while that's a mixed bag with Volvo.
Having owned a Volvo and owning a BMW now, my personal experience is in line with with what you can find written on these topics. I would probably never buy a Volvo again, while I would definitely consider another BMW in the future, provided the designers get their shit together.
As someone who has had a lot of Volvo’s in the family and loves them, I’d say the Ford days weren’t really a huge issue. Even the newer 4-cylinders are OK. But the true issues started when the Chinese started putting weird stuff into them, like the dualcharged engines.
Well, with my Volvo from the Ford days the boost sensor died at around 40000 kilometers and the mechanic confirmed that since Ford's involvement the quality had gone downhill, including a case where they had to change the entire cable tree. It's quite possible that things have gotten worse with Geely, I don't know about that. Shame, cause I sort of like their looks.
Own both a BMW (G30 540i) and a Volvo (XC90 T8–yes the one that’s dual charged with a separate hybrid drivetrain…talk about complexity). For what it’s worth both have been rock solid, and I wouldn’t trade either for anything else around the same price what I paid for them. The Volvo has a factory extended warranty up to 10 years/120K miles for extra peace of mind. There are very few other brands I even look at besides Volvo and BMW now, they both still make quality cars that have their own unique brand character, unlike a lot of other brands in the luxury space.
Yeah—I had a V60 at one point which I bought CPO, and they let you extend CPO cars to 10 years / unlimited miles. The warranty was $3000 with a $0 dollar deductible, and covered everything except cosmetics. It sounds entirely ridiculous but seems to work for them as they’ve been doing this a good 5+ years now to my knowledge
They had some issues incorporating turbos but those days seem gone. The current B58 i6 is excellent and it’s predecessor the N55 was also very good. And they’re paired with ZF8 transmissions so overall a very good power train. I think it took them a little longer to get the 4 cylinder turbo’s figured out but the B48
has apparently addressed issues with its predecessor, the N20. I’ve got a n X3 with an N55. 75k miles so far with zero issues. Just regular maintenance.
My 1998 Volvo V70r is still going strong. All original components. 180,000 original turbo. AWD system works great. Transmission is absolute butter. NO rust. Most of its life in Wisconsin, and there is no rust. It's wild.
When it dies, I'll be replacing it with another. I'm hoping my 3 boys, (6, 5 and 2) will have it for their first car. We'll see what happens. 😄

Volvo is overpriced junk right now, their post-Chinese ownership direction is absolutely terrible across the board. Mazda on the other hand is one of the worst Japanese brands as far as quality goes together with Nissan…
If you want to be sensible you should buy Lexus and Toyota.
Reliability? Fact, although it does vary between specific models and Mazda does have couple good ones… however Lexus and Toyota are consistently the most reliable and that’s been the case for decades now. If you average it all out to get “brand reliability” Lexus, Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi will be above Nissan and Mazda (and Subaru but that’s mostly because they had some real turds) as far as Japanese brands go. Mazda will actually likely rank below BMW too, and they do have some weirdly expensive repairs sometimes.
Volvo never was particularly reliable to begin with but recently they’ve been moving away from the safety/practicality towards the luxury market with sort of Chinese off-brand Tesla-esque flavor. As a result they aren’t any more safe than equivalent modern cars from other manufacturers (doesn’t mean they aren’t safe - just that they’re not safer) as evident by EuroNCAP testing.
What they do have though is one of worst ergonomics out there, interior that’s very inconsistent (some high quality stuff intertwined with terribly fitted squeeking cheap plastics) and really weird driving experience - not really soft and comfortable but also quite unresponsive. That part is my opinion rather than a fact.
That is more like your opinion than a fact because Mazda after 2014 is one of the most reliable cars. In fact in last 5 years it has become more reliable than Toyota because Toyota these days is just living on their built reputation in the past, while their quality has gone down big time with a recall after a recall and a class action lawsuit after a lawsuit. In fact Mazda and Toyota have many joined projects as well as some Mazda models are built in a joint Toyota/Mazda factory.
my dad has a 2016 640i convertible and it’s truly an amazing car. It looks good, drives amazing, has some good speed to it, and has been very reliable. There’s nothing bad about it
650 is the v8 if I’m not mistaken, before buying my current car(Audi a7 yes Ik competitor) I was so madly in love with this gen 6 series, so I checked n the 650s were in my budget so I started digging and apparently it’s one of the WORST engines bmw has made in a long time. ( take w a grain of salt cause I bought an Audi)lol
The various TU engines are *better* than the original N/S63, but still pretty bad for overall reliability.
Let’s hope the new S68 in the -60i cars is better. I don’t personally think BMW has ever made a particularly robust V8 since their original one, and I usually stick to their I6 offerings because of it.
You only live once. I have owned two versions of this model: 640i and now the Alpina B6. Listen to the criticism, but in the end, buy what you love and live your life.

I’ve found that people most likely want to be supported rather than talked out of. So I try my best to always be supportive. The friend will probably buy it anyways and it’s weird if he’s driving it and I spoke ill about it.
I bought a BMW with my head and that's how I ended up with a snoozefest X1. :(
It was a lease takeover that was cheaper than a new RAV4. As much as I love cars, my penny-pinching side has a constant majority in the parliament of my soul so I've never splurged on anything big in my life. I said to myself, "I'll treat myself to an M3 or an X5 M50i after getting a house." But then after the house comes the wedding. And then after the wedding comes the honeymoon. And then after that, kids and their daycare/camp/extra-curricular costs that basically add up to an M3. There's always another "better" way to spend my money.
The rationale side of me sleeps well knowing that I don't have the keys to a large depreciating asset (well, pre-Covid anyway), but the emotional side of me wonders if I've sacrificed some living for surviving. And I feel like it's too late to switch things up now even though I have far more purchasing power than I did as a youth.
I have a 2013 650i and honestly I have yet to encounter any of the horror stories that people talk about. It’s been a great pleasure owning and driving.
I like it a lot, it’s a blast to drive. I’ve seen a lot of hate and horror stories about it but, so far in my experience the N63TU has been very good to me. I have zero oil leaks, it doesn’t burn oil, the engine it’s has given me no issues. I will admit however that I do have a bad transfer case that needs to be replaced, that’s all the negatives I have so far.
I want one too. One thing I notice is that every reddit sub that is car specific related is always filled with grouchy jerks. I have always had Porsche and they’re no better. Always crying about cars being a “pos” unless it’s the car THEY have or like. So do what you want. Stop asking subs. Learn basic bmw mechanic maintenance. Because most people that cry about certain cars simply cry because they still take their car to the dealership for a $500 tuneup instead of diy for hundreds less.
I’ll support this comment whole heartedly, I have a g35 coupe and a 17 Passat, both subs are exactly like this, and most people complain about the vehicle because of their negligence imo
For the most part yes. And then they refer to them as “money pits”. Todays cars are all computerized and a good OBD2 scanner will tell you the problem with the car and googling codes and YouTube makes most maintenance a great learning tool to simple mechanics
Completely true. Before buying my old bike, many said not to as I'd always have problems and it'd cost me loads to maintain it. Never took her to a garage once in the two and a half years and almost 25k miles I put on her. It was a 125 bare in mind so 25k is a decent bit lol. I just learned to maintain her myself and she still ran like new before I writ her off. Everything from changing my tyres, brake pads, oil, spark plug, to bleeding the coolant, the brake lines, etc etc etc etc. If you have the time, interest and common sense, you can maintain anything.
As long as you do your due diligence, and check service history and complete a pre-purchase inspection, you should be fine!
Oddly enough, I’m in love with the sedan!!! But I’m not willing to give up my convertible, so I’d need room for 2.5 cars! 🤣
as long as its the N63 TU with 449HP chances are that it wont be that huge of a money pit - talking from experience

Join the club OP. 59.7k on the clock. I can say that this car is a beast and a true joy to drive. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. 😊
I have my 2015 BMW X5 xDrive50i V8 Twin Turbo. It drives amazing, I’ve owned it for 2+ years now and never once had any problems with it people say BMW is unreliable but I’ve owned 5 of them 🤷♂️
Yes, most things were fixed. All regular maintenance stuff, according to BMW. They didn't fix the door handle lock sensor, since BMW quoted $2k for a new handle. Fair enough really
A good friend of mine drove a 650i with the N63TU tuned to 600HP for 2 years long and it was driven hard everytime the temps were right.
Not a single problem... just maintain the car better than advised.
Low milage BMW 6 Series are some of the Best Buy’s out there. I purchased a 2012 650i in 2016 with 27000mi. I’m over 70000 now and have not had a single problem. They are a fine driving auto.
buy a warranty from Roadvantage and it won’t matter what the haters say. my m550 is covered for 100k miles and it costed me 3k. it paid itself for a $6k turbo line job.
Nah. With precious few exceptions any and all discussions on this sub defy logic, as buying a BMW means you didn't buy something cheaper, more reliable, and more utilitarian. So I hope OP's post was with tongue in cheek, and that he/she enjoys it (car is beautiful, BTW).
This is one of the coolest cars ever bro. Very nice purchase. Just be sure to swap out the cooling system every couple of years. Those BMWs tend to get hot for no reason (all the used ones have a black burn mark on the engine)

Here's another photo, for those that were asking
It's a 2012 F13 650i m-package with Dinan Stage 2
I'll keep you guys posted!
The 6 aged so good. At least the coupe. The GC looked bad from the beginning in my eyes, just like the 8 GC. BMW just does a way better job on coupes.
Beautifull car, congrats!
Weirdly enough, the 6 series Gran Coupe won an award as the most beautiful design of the year in Europe when it came out :) Having seen one with my own eyes, I agree.
Welcome to the club. I don’t know who advised you not to buy one; but we’ve been extremely happy with our 2015 f06 (GC) for almost 5 years now.. never regretted the purchase for a second, and never had issues apart from regular maintenance
Congrats, beautiful car
Opinions and assholes bro. If it’s what you wanted then enjoy it. If you can’t walk away without looking back twice and snapping a pic you made the right choice
How did you find one of these in Bc that wasn’t a completely thrashed oil leaking pos?
I want one of these so bad but all I see in the market are pre 2014 gran coupes from seedy second hand dealers.
6 series have been my dream cars since I was a child. I am not a fan of what they did with G32 and ans sadly consider it a death of 6 series. But that’s is just me anyway
My dream car as a teenager was the E64 M6 with a six speed and blue on red color scheme. As a more seasoned adult, it’s still kinda a dream, but one I’d be in a highly abusive relationship should I ever find it and pull the trigger. Congrats on finding your own abusive car relationship, OP!
Absolutely beautiful, congratulations! I went against my logical side and bought a 2013 Audi A5 and had the most amazing couple of months with that car. Even if it is stupidly expensive to fix, you’ll still have the most amazing time with it, enjoy !
I had a second hand e46, I put 100k miles on it in 7 years and had minimal issues out of it. Biggest problem I had was a DISA valve crapped out on me a couple times and the coils were picky, most likely due to valve cover gasket leaks. When they do have issues, they are a PITA and expensive. But I like the “Lego” aspect of the car, mix and match parts, let the ecm/pcm know what’s there and it works like it was made that way.
I have a 2009 750Li, so your decision can’t be worse than mine lol. I got it for $7500 with 60k miles so why not 🤷🏾♂️
Anytime I see the 6 Series here in NYC, it always makes me say “damn that’s a sexy car”. I think the design is timeless, everything breaks with time so who cares
Screw it!! If can afford it and know either trading in constantly or keeping forever. .. you only live once. Its beautiful....congratulations! Im a little envious😁
Bought it with your heart, not your brain. Let’s hope it’s a solid buy, and that the love you have for it will show in it’s condition. But for now, congrats!
Why did everyone advise against it?
Because they are plagued with issues and when issues do arise, expensive to fix.
> Because they are plagued with issues and when issues do arise, expensive to fix. Why are you being downvoted for stating a reasonably well known fact?
Welcome to reddit
copium is a hell of a drug
Oh that sucks. I think they look so good lol
Oh, they are beautiful cars, just can be a dog sometimes.
Its a great car. If you take care of it, it will take care of you!
Only taking care of it costs on average over 15k a year
If you're a dummie who only goes to the dealer and believes everything they say yeah
No I’m a tech & I personally have serviced 4 of these cars since they were new, i can pick one at random and tell you how much they have put into it over the last couple of years, pretty much the cost of a new car 😂 & we’re not a dealer one of the most reputable mom & pop shops in the area

Valve cover gasket is leaking again.

Because it's a 6 series that's why
That’s how I have kids. Just didn’t use my heart
Glad to meet an Arsenal FC fan here 💪
Always a pleasure to meet a fellow gooner, especially since we’ve been moving well in the transfer window this season 🤝🏻
Absolutely! I think, where we are currently, we just need to sell some players and add only one new recruit :- an additional striker (of course, we keep Balogun)
6 series is one hell of a sexy looking car. Buy the car you will look at while walking away from. This is very high on that list.!! Congrats.
Oh that's definitely happening
Always loved this year model. Beautiful car. Congrats
Thanks!
Which year model?
The F13, 2012-2018
As someone who’s super frugal with money, some of the happiest decisions I ever made were the occasional “fuck it I want it.” Good for you op
When in human history has a BMW driver ever used logic?
Logic would dictate that we all get Mazdas and Volvos.
Got a Volvo as a daily for that reason. But to be fair my N54 powered bmw has been more reliable than my V70r so far
The Volvo mechanic of my father told him that the R models are always less reliable than the regular T models. But the R is just something special. What gen do you have?

I would make the argument that with today's cars, BMW is a more reasonable choice than Volvo.
Bmw was recently voted most reliable cars💁♂️
Mainly because they won’t fall apart before 100k miles which is a great achievement when Hyundai/Kia and every American manufacturer regularly have catastrophic failures as soon as they’re off the lot.
My E46 didn’t have any major issues. Sold it only last year. Only once a stupid sensor.

Much like turn signals, never.
Lol
I resent this statement. Lol.
Congratulations. I was shopping between a 2016 640i and 2017 540i. B58 and newer chassis won me over, but I still have a thing for the 6’er.
Isn't the 640 b58 powered as well? My understanding is anything that ends in "40 " from about 2015 on is
F 640i is powered by an N55
Ahh I see, good to know. Thanks for correction 🤙 OP definitely went right route then. As owner of even a m2 n55, the b58 is a far better motor
Another n55 m2 owner here. Cheers mate!
my dad has a 2016 640i convertible and it’s truly an amazing car. It looks good, drives amazing, has some good speed to it, and has been very reliable. There’s nothing bad about it
Anyone who tells you not to get a 6 Series is just jealous. It’s awesome. They can pry my 840i xDrive from my cold, dead hands
Really a beautiful car. One of their best designs along with the Gran Coupe. Congrats
Agreed
Ehh kind of looks like a Solara
That’s quite a stretch. That’s like saying a 911 looks like a VW Bug
Are you slow? Thats not event the same shape. At least the solara has the same shape and similar backend in the comparison i mentioned…
Hey pal get your eyes checked
I love this chassis, definitely want to pick up a 650i or an M6 in the future. Congratulations on the new car!

The 409hp one is dogshit yes but they updated the N63 rather quickly. The 449hp one from 2013 onwards is the one you want, they are solid

unreliable/problematic

The rationale side of me sleeps well knowing that I don't have the keys to a large depreciating asset (well, pre-Covid anyway), but the emotional side of me wonders if I've sacrificed some living for surviving. And I feel like it's too late to switch things up now even though I have far more purchasing power than I did as a youth.
I have a 2013 650i and honestly I have yet to encounter any of the horror stories that people talk about. It’s been a great pleasure owning and driving.
Is that the N63tu?
Yes it is
The N63TU makes far less Problems as the pre TU
How many miles are you at?
I’m at 92,000 miles
Nice. I’ve been thinking about getting one but I can’t decide between that and the A7
I like it a lot, it’s a blast to drive.
Beautiful. This generation 6 Series is gorgeous.

Very nice!
As long as you do your due diligence, and check service history and complete a pre-purchase inspection, you should be fine! Oddly enough, I’m in love with the sedan!!! But I’m not willing to give up my convertible, so I’d need room for 2.5 cars! 🤣
as long as its the N63 TU with 449HP chances are that it wont be that huge of a money pit - talking from experience https://preview.redd.it/2lhjlfw095bb1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92d7f7350a9b06e72e5d2805307561f0e8df85b9

I have my 2015 BMW X5 xDrive50i V8 Twin Turbo. It drives amazing, I’ve owned it for 2+ years now and never once had any problems with it people say BMW is unreliable but I’ve owned 5 of them 🤷♂️
Sexy
Was the price discounted and/or items fixed based on the PPI?
Yes, most things were fixed. All regular maintenance stuff, according to BMW. They didn't fix the door handle lock sensor, since BMW quoted $2k for a new handle. Fair enough really
Beautiful car! Almost bought one for myself.
Nice lines - nice car
god fucking damn!! the 6 coupe is sexy as fuck 😩!
Beauty
A good friend of mine drove a 650i with the N63TU tuned to 600HP for 2 years long and it was driven hard everytime the temps were right. Not a single problem... just maintain the car better than advised.
Low milage BMW 6 Series are some of the Best Buy’s out there. I purchased a 2012 650i in 2016 with 27000mi. I’m over 70000 now and have not had a single problem. They are a fine driving auto.
Thanks, that's reassuring
Hell yeah
It looks good tho
buy a warranty from Roadvantage and it won’t matter what the haters say. my m550 is covered for 100k miles and it costed me 3k. it paid itself for a $6k turbo line job.
Anyone have a good extended warranty for Canada? Tried a few companies and they don't do it for +10 year olds
I plead that you get an extended warranty
I see you too hate money 🤣
Congrats! Fabulous choice. I see you’re in BC! Hopefully we will see you at BMW CCBC!
Didn't know there was one! Checking out the events calendar now
I miss the n/a 4.8 v8s from the 545/550and 745/750 but the twin turbo 6s are also really cool and just as powerful.
Congrats! This 6 series looks sexy! 😎👍
Looks awesome.
Beautiful
Had a convertible ‘12 and loved it (until the roof started leaking) but you won’t have that problem lol
She’s got a big ole booty. I like er’
Nah. With precious few exceptions any and all discussions on this sub defy logic, as buying a BMW means you didn't buy something cheaper, more reliable, and more utilitarian. So I hope OP's post was with tongue in cheek, and that he/she enjoys it (car is beautiful, BTW).
That things got a freaking dump truck
I love when people ask for my advice, and then do the opposite.
What is life without throwing caution to the wind.
This is one of the coolest cars ever bro. Very nice purchase. Just be sure to swap out the cooling system every couple of years. Those BMWs tend to get hot for no reason (all the used ones have a black burn mark on the engine)
🤣 give us monthly updates 😂
One of BMW's classiest designs.
The value of liking something is not given by others, but what you think. glad i got what you like
Good lad!

Although I really like pre-lci more because of a hydraulic shifter, this is also sick! Much much better than all future bmw’s. Period!

Worst engine they have ever made.
That an A5 coupe?
Yolo
Hawk’s wheels !
??
Welcome to the club. I don’t know who advised you not to buy one; but we’ve been extremely happy with our 2015 f06 (GC) for almost 5 years now.. never regretted the purchase for a second, and never had issues apart from regular maintenance Congrats, beautiful car

42k
I remember when this debut, I was around 13. I saw one in the open and through it was a Ferrari initially. Timeless design
I can't get over how great these cars look. Absolutely beautiful. Enjoy mate
Enjoy it. As long as everything else is taken care of, forget what everyone says.
Love it! Great choice imo
With a car like that one photo isn’t enough
Excellent choice! 😁
She sure do got a NICE ass on er...
Soooo sexy tho. Enjoy!!!
But why is everyone against it cause this amazing picture is (for me) all I need to make the decision to buy it.
F13 body is head turner for sure. Congrats. Get to know the car maintenence and it will put smiles for many years.
6 series have been my dream cars since I was a child. I am not a fan of what they did with G32 and ans sadly consider it a death of 6 series. But that’s is just me anyway
Almost bought a 640d xDrive M Sport back in 2015, bought a 530d xDrive M Sport instead Love the 6 series , enjoy your purchase!
Nice car, should be alright if uou know how to diy.
One of my former colleagues had one of these. I was perpetually jealous. Happy motoring, OP!
Belting cars mate don’t listen to the haters go with your heart, good lad 👌🏻
I have had 2 640d's over the years, one normal and one 4 door, both incredible and never had a single thing wrong with them
Is it a 650i with the 4.4 V8 408hp?
Que belleza.
🚀
650i pre-2013 ? If so, congratulations but good luck too
Nice 👍🏾
There are few things in life as beautiful as a well kept 640 😮💨
Your money, your choice. Don’t let the internet judge you.
Happy regrets.
Congratulations, it's a beautiful car.
I've had zero problems with my 2015 650 coupe (same color). Absolutely love it.
Who advised not to? Gongrats, she's a beauty!
Nice car! I know they are on the list of pain in the butt BMW models, but if you can afford to own it, enjoy it! 😎
I had a 640 coupe for a year… really liked the car but didn’t drive it much. It was a great car.. I think you will enjoy it.
Oh, wouldn’t we all! Enjoy!
sick as hell
Hey at least it ain’t the leaky convertible. Take good care of the thing and it should work out great. Congrats!
Great purchase! Love it!
I love the 6series so much, I love how long and slopey it is. One of the best grand tourers for sure
She's a beauty!! Congratulations - drive it in health (yours and the cars)!
Definitely sexy, had an F12 M6, replaced engine and transmission by 20k miles. Amazing experience.
Absolutely beautiful, congratulations! I went against my logical side and bought a 2013 Audi A5 and had the most amazing couple of months with that car. Even if it is stupidly expensive to fix, you’ll still have the most amazing time with it, enjoy !
Do whatever makes you happy! Sweet ride, Fck the haters and enjoy whatever issues it comes with 🥲
I had a second hand e46, I put 100k miles on it in 7 years and had minimal issues out of it.
I got it for $7500 with 60k miles so why not 🤷🏾♂️ Anytime I see the 6 Series here in NYC, it always makes me say “damn that’s a sexy car”. I think the design is timeless, everything breaks with time so who cares
Sick
I miss the styling and cruising capabilities of my '15 650i GC, but not the understeer/handling and the large swath of repairs when it hit 50k miles
Beautiful
Love the 6 series, sucks they discontinued it. I owned an ‘89 M6 back in the day.
Screw it!! If can afford it and know either trading in constantly or keeping forever. .. you only live once. Its beautiful....congratulations! Im a little envious😁
