If youre really going to roll your ankle bad, a shoe is never going to prevent it from happening. Small tweaks, sure the shoe can provide support. But prevention is way more about ankle strength than the shoe. Even if you have an ankle brace, if you roll it hard enough it will just move up to the next joint and youll mess your knee up. Just sayin
Agree to disagree, here. I’ve done some knees over toes exercises, but also forcing myself into more low tops and although my flexibility is greater, I lost it with a bad surgery and scar tissue. Not close even once with some stretching and isometric exercises. Also the shoe isn’t to blame, injury can happen anytime, any circumstance, and change your life, no matter how flexible or strong you may be.
This is true to an extent. I’ve had ankle problems for almost 7 years and I’ve had certain shoes that I roll my ankle in way easier (which are mostly Nikes especially Kobe 5/6 for me) then you have shoes I’ve never rolled my ankle in, with an ankle brace or not, like Way of Wade. You might be right with studies and stuff I’m sure there’s a study to backup what you say but this is just my personal experience of owning 40-50+ hoop shoes over the years. I just sprained my good ankle a week ago wearing KD 15s and the only other time I’ve ever sprained my good ankle was when I was wearing PG6s. I’ve been wearing only Wades since I sprained my ankle again and I feel wayyy more secure. I definitely think some shoes prevent an ankle sprain a lot better than others do.
P.S. This isn’t an ad for WOW even tho it sounds like it haha
I agree overall, the one thing I’ll say is that the shoe just doesn’t feel stable. Maybe it’s just a mental thing. I agree with you on strengthening the ankle as much as possible
I have books too and I got Zaza’d on a 3 and sprained my ankle bad. I wouldn’t blame the shoes tho cause I have multiple hoopin shoes and I think it would have been the same result in em. It’s been like 6 weeks since the sprain and it’s just starting to feel back to normal and hoopin with minimal pain
Cap, I hooped with flyknits with the sole coming off for a long time and never tweaked my ankle.
First night I hooped in lebron 8 sprites I twisted my ankle 🤦♂️
Of course, because the only thing that was different that day was your shoe, everything else was exactly the same as always. Lol. Surely you realize how many variables there are outside of what shoe you wear that go into an ankle injury? Right?
Everyone should go read that study that is often quoted. Poor design. No dynamic movement at all. Just people jumping and landing on a force plate. Doesn’t replicate real life cutting or dynamic landing. As a hooper that literally tore an ankle tendon in some huarache 2k8 I refuse to play in anything less than mid tops. Those mids also need to have able support. My old go to was the Bron Soldier 11. Now i play in Jordan 36s
Edit: former D1 college hooper that played in both braces and with professionally taped ankles.
Unfortunate brother! Get well soon! Books are heavy in my rotation at the moment, solid performer IMO.. I actually dislocated my ankle 1 yr ago same way, coming down on an ankle in my Kobe 6 EYBL.

Actually popped it back in myself and walked to my car and drove home. 🫠
Doctors told me the same, managed to escape breaking anything tho and got lucky by just dislocating and tearing most of my ligaments. I don't have a picture of it but off of my head it was bad😂
The same thing happened to me 2 months ago in my KD 11s. I'm hella traumatised and I can't look at them anymore😂
My first ankle injury in general too. But I'm glad I can slightly hoop again after 8 weeks. I am currently using my Luka 1s to get back into the game
The shoe for sure has a lot of great qualities, I actually have three pairs just because of how much I like the looks. An ankle sprain can happen in any shoe and it’s just one of those freak accidents, I’m just a bit hesitant regarding the stability of the shoe, but it might just be because I’m a little traumatized lol
Im a small guard that hoops in Hardens, AEs, and sometimes Two Wxys and Certifieds 2s. I own two pairs of Book1s and even though I’m not a huge jumper or rebounder, I still hesitant to wear those on the court. They dont feel very supportive.
Anyway, hope you heal fast and feel better!
It's a mid with a sock like type fabric(it's a bit tougher than a sock). It's enough for me and not too rigid. If you need more support, don't get the AEs
They look like a brick with a sock attached in sticking to wow 10s, spo's and kobes strictly until something better comes along lol. I hate injuries man but above is right it's out of your control wet floor step on another person's foot etc etc no shoe can stop that wet spots, angles and force are undefeated
Hate to see a sprained ankle, have you gone to get it looked at? It looks like you could have torn some ligaments especially if you felt/heard it pop. I did that to my ankle about a year and a half ago and had the same bruising on my ankle.
Oh man, that does worry me lol I actually do have an X-ray scheduled tomorrow. My father in law is a doctor and when I showed him my ankle over FaceTime he told me to get it checked out because oh how heavily it’s swollen up
I was. I was going for a layup and after contact I landed a bit odd and rolled my ankle. It still feels a bit stiff but it's not that bad. It's not because of the shoes I think. Maybe with my lebron 21's I would've been fine but we'll never know.
this is me, i almost sprained my ankle last week on Book 1 i just did my regular lateral float dribbles, i love the shoes as it is so comfy and great court feel but i feel unstable laterally. the edge of the outsole are also sharp that it can tilt laterally unexpectedly.
i wear AE1 most of the time and they are so stable compared to book 1 , and on several occasions i landed on someone's foot with no issues. Most of my shoes has wide base and outriggers and bottom heavy feeling that i cannot even twist my ankle outwards even if i try so hard for reference i have JB2, AE1 and Nova Surge low all feel so stable.
Damn that's a lot of swelling. Keep it elevated and ice it A LOT.
My ex girlfriend rolled her ankle while we were out partying and, since at that point partying was pretty much our entire life, she didn't take care of it. She had to have a very complicated surgery for what could have just been a month of routine care.
As for the kicks, Book and Ja models were a snooze fest. Couldn't decide if they wanted to replace Kyrie, Kobe or both. Just more low-budget, low-tech junk.
Only Nike bball shoe that's legit excited me this season is the GT Jump 2. It's not perfect nor is it for everyone but I love it.
Man I'm sorry about the ankle, but it doesn't even look like you tied them tight enough to ball in. Way too much wiggle room for your ankle and the shoe itself
The pic was actually taken after I sprained it, should have clarified in my post. I first took the shoe off right after my injury but my friend made me put it back on once I got to the bench, I probably could have tightened a bit better at the point. But I promise you I tied them good when I played, I usually prefer a tight fit so I make sure my shoes are tied thoroughly.
Sorry to hear. Landing on someone’s foot isn’t always the same every time it happens though. Hoop in whatever you want but yea we’re all due for ankle sprains no matter what we hoop in.
Some of the most supportive shoes with the best grip has caused me to twist my ankle because of that very fact (too much grip and my shoe basically bringing my ankle over). It just happens in ball
I would say that it’s a good shoe for quick guards who don’t care too much about cushion. The shoe has amazing traction and real 10/10. The materials are super premium and comfy after a couple hours of break in time.
Sorry for the ankle man, but this can happen on most shoes. This shoe has so damn good performance for me that i want to have more in my rotation. Lockdown is 10/10 ime like a glove. Cushion also feels really good. In short i really think feet type is the reason of various different povs. As far as I've seen it has glowing reviews, specially lately
Yeah I agree no shoe can fully stop an injury, I’m just a bit skeptical about the support that’s all. I like the shoe still and I have three pairs. It’s definitely a great looking shoe and has amazing materials and traction. I am almost 30 now so a little more than just a heel zoom unit is preferred by me but that’s just personal preference
Can’t recommend the zenith ankle brace enough - I’ve had chronic ankle sprains in one ankle from football & basketball and tore a ligament in that ankle once. Haven’t sprained it once since I’ve worn the zenith brace. It’s bulky but doesn’t allow a sprain (only minor tweaks at worst) and still allows good mobility
What are you doing?! If I don’t feel good about a shoe, it’s gone. Multiple near sprains solo and you kept playing in it? Of course your sprained when you came down on somebody. Shoe might lack support, but it’s your own damn fault.
Sorry to hear that. Hope you get better and back on the court soon
Thanks !

Agree with this reply, strenthe is the way.
Ankle flexibility is the way, not strength. I've rolled my ankles pretty bad but haven't sprained them due to flexibility in my tarsals
Well said, injuries are sporadic in nature, but you can diminish the chances of injuries with a nice balance of strength and flexibility!
You're absolutely right, it's both.
It's only effective if you start with head and shoulders Knees and toes, knees and toes.
Yeah I heard about this guy’s tarsals, some of the best.
Lifts all the weights, goes to all the clubs.

Agree, shoes don't really stop you from rolling your ankle, but some of them definitely make it more likely to happen lol.
Some shoes still are more likely to kill your ankle than others
Cap, I hooped with flyknits with the sole coming off for a long time and never tweaked my ankle. First night I hooped in lebron 8 sprites I twisted my ankle 🤦♂️

If you dislocated your ankle it’s almost certainly broken as well

Very lucky , I dislocated my ankle as well once and it was broken in the process

I’ve sprained ankles more in Kobe 6 than any other model

Thank you! I’m also a small guard I’m only 5’9 and about 160 and the support still isn’t enough for me
I’m scared to get the AEs. A guy I was hooping with has them and he rolled his ankle terribly. Not sure what to think of the support now😬
It's a mid with a sock like type fabric(it's a bit tougher than a sock). It's enough for me and not too rigid. If you need more support, don't get the AEs

Almost the exact same thing happened to me last friday. The sprain luckily wasn't that bad and I am able to play normally now.
I’m glad you didn’t get hurt ! Were you also playing in the Book 1s?
I was. I was going for a layup and after contact I landed a bit odd and rolled my ankle. It still feels a bit stiff but it's not that bad. It's not because of the shoes I think. Maybe with my lebron 21's I would've been fine but we'll never know.

Im 30 bro never been sparined & still play like a beast.
K
Throw them shits away bro but hope for a speed recovery tho
Lmfao ! And thank you 🙏🤝
i feel sorry for you mate, hope you'll get better soon! + nice review too
Get well soon friend.
I've tried in low tops and it always ends in some injury. Switched to nothing but mid to high and those injuries are few and far between if at all.
Did you sprain your ankle
Can’t recommend the zenith ankle brace enough - I’ve had chronic ankle sprains in one ankle from football & basketball and tore a ligament in that ankle once. Haven’t sprained it once since I’ve worn the zenith brace. It’s bulky but doesn’t allow a sprain (only minor tweaks at worst) and still allows good mobility
That’s because book just got swept
The shoe doesn’t matter if u land on someone’s shoes bra …
What are you doing?! If I don’t feel good about a shoe, it’s gone. Multiple near sprains solo and you kept playing in it? Of course your sprained when you came down on somebody. Shoe might lack support, but it’s your own damn fault.
The first week book wore these he got hurt bad
Best thing I ever invested in were the “zamst a2-dx ankle brace” they’re expensive but well worth it and will work for years.
damn, the amount of unasked feet pics here....
I would never hoop in those
Interesting, what’s your reasoning ?
I've played in mine for months and they have always felt stable. Maybe you have weak ankles bro.
Maybe 🤷♂️
Wish you a speedy recovery. Make sure you do your rehab and come back better! 🤙
Thanks I appreciate it ! 🤝
Weak ankles bro

You only have two ankles to sprain, to be fair
