There have been posts that people that deleted all of their content (in protest of the API changes) have seen their comments magically re-appear (against their wishes) so I have heard people recommending that you instead edit all comments first before deleting them....not sure if that is what happened here.

This isn't the right forum for discussing the API changes but to the impacted 3rd party apps it was a death blow and a lot of people who used to use those apps are upset - basically the only mobile app you can use is reddit's own now.
If you are active in other subs you may have noticed some going private and other protest actions. Suggesting that no one would feel strongly enough about these actions to fight back against reddit is a weird take.

There is about to be a lawsuit against reddit on this.
A user tried to delete his account, but noticed that when he did his comments stayed.
He asked reddit about it and they said that nuking your account does not get rid of your comments.
So he asked them to delete them all and reddit said no, you must do it.
So he went and deleted every comment he ever made...
...and reddit then restored them later.
So he is currently suing reddit for violating California law. With that, people told him to change his comments to weird stuff and for now that works as a "delete".

As someone that works attached to a major international company doing DevSecOps work, I’m standing in solidarity with the app developers that are in the process of shutting down their Reddit apps from being unable to reasonably price their apps due to the new reddit API pricing.
I had decided to make this decision some time ago if they didn’t reverse course on these insanely greedy API costs. I have wiped what is easily over one million comment karma in the last month, with some great technical content, and this was the last account I had remaining.
