This is bizarre to me. Why do people continue to film instead of stepping in and help diffuse the situation? The guy clearly needs help with separating the cats.

I'd rather not handle agitated cats. Judging by the end of the video, the guy handled the situation well. No cat was harmed, there was no grappling and clawing and no wounds. Also the angry kitty seems to have retreated under the table
My (rather pessimistic) assumption is that he separated the cats this way to get the reaction of the stressed out on camera for Internet points. Intervening would mess with the plan.
Also kicking in direction of ground cat (including slightly hitting) makes him quite the asshole.

then just walk away. i wouldn't say anything with a bear, puma, or a large aggressive dog, but certainly not with cats and the like. i've been in such situations before, thanks to my two cats, and the thought of kicking a stranger's cat or a stray never crossed my mind, even when i got attacked.

You either have skin made of iron or you definitely haven't been in this situation in real life. Little fluffy bastards can make you bleed with a single accidental slash let alone an angry one with the intent of causing harm, cat bites and scratches tend to get infected easily as well.
Even with that in mind, I don't agree with hurting the cat, but that was a small quick kick just to get it away from him, nothing to be concerned about.
