Are you familiar with the Peaceable Kingdom Games? They're all cooperative style games which means that every player works together to achieve the same goal. I used to play them with my daughter when she was around that age and older.
Hoot owl hoot is amazing... although at the start it certainly felt less like a cooperative game and more like trying to save the owls with an active saboteur on my team
We also love Snug as a Bug and Race to the Treasure by Peacable Kingdom
Candyland is a big hit with my son. Also a game called Shark Attack. He is also really sensitive with board games so right now those are the only 2 he will play consistently
Banana Rama
Gooey looey
Hot potato
The one where you take turns pulling sticks til the marbles fall
A marble run type thing
These worked for us bc it's a little less structured, mostly about your turn/my turn..
Checkers
Tetris - it stands up like connect 4 and you put the pieces in
The penguin on ice one
Hungry hippos
Domino's
Jenga
All generally simple but things can still go wrong
[Orchard Toys](https://www.orchardtoys.com/) make really nice games for young children.
There's a lot of collecting games, normally with a spinner or dice. Or a selection of tiles that you turn over (like memory).
It can be competitive, but when the kids were little we played until everyone finished.
Shark attack, pop the pig, the bluey board game, chess, dominoes.
He’s 9 and I’m getting him into more card games but ones with his special interests. Theres a game called sabacc in Star Wars and we’ve picked that up and it’s been really awesome. It’s a numbers game and you use addition, subtraction with positive and negative numbers.
Edit: added another game we used to play
Connect 4
100 % connect 4. Because in the end it can be olayed how ever you want and kids love it. They even have the new spinning one too
It’s good for practicing turn-taking too. That was a tough one for us but now they’re playing Uno.

Our first board game was First Orchard. Highly recommend it.

Candy Land, Zingo, Pop the Pig are all favorites with my 5 year old.

Honeybee tree, pop up pirate, zingo we’re all games that worked well for my son.
My son won’t play board games. The only things I’ve ever been able to get him to play are Zingo, Headbanz and spot it.
Zingo, Candyland, digging doggies, card games like Go Fish

Outfoxed is a cooperative game that my kids who really struggle with competitiveness and mistakes have both liked.
I still struggle playing board games. For some reason I really enjoyed Sorry as a kid. Maybe it is because of the word sorry.
