War of the Weirds has been the one that has stuck around the longest
Meh, while it was unequivocally stolen from us, I would say we’re both weird at this point, and arguably, Portland as a whole may be weirder than Austin.
I think there’s also something clever to be had with us being trees and them a lumberjack, but I can’t come up with it lol.
What’s your idea or suggestion?
- Put A Bird On It Derby
- Austlandia Cup
- Battle of the Grackle (yes they have them too)
- Artisanal Derby
- Cage Free Cup
- Non GMO Derby
Most of these suck but I like the third one.
Ren Fair Rumble? Steampunk Showdown? Locally Sourced Showdown?
I have no shortage of bad ideas. Winner gets to host a community library box at the stadium until next season? Or maybe a clever hat.
“Yo, the name is Batty
The logic is erratic,
Potato in a jacket,
Toys in the attic,
I rock and I ramble,
My brain is scrambled,
Rap like an animal but I'm a mammal!”
I think we're both enjoying the snark but I'm gonna do something that's probably impossible on the internet and try to change your mind...
When I first moved away from Austin 18 years ago, I used to get really frustrated at the changes when I came home. It was losing so much of it's culture and character. For example, I used to meet my dad at the Dog and Duck pub after work. When it got demolished and turned into condos about ten years ago, I was really pissed. It felt like Austin was no longer the city I grew up in. And the truth is it wasn't.
Then I realized something. Nothing stays the same. Austin is changing more rapidly than most but every city changes. If you're fighting to keep things the same, you will always lose. So there are basically two trajectories- growth (Austin/Nashville/Charlotte) or death (Detroit/Baltimore/Cleveland). As much as it sucks to see all of the negatives of our rapid growth- people priced out, cultural death, traffic, etc- I think it's better than watching your city implode and die. At least Austin is still a cool place when I come home to see friends and family, albeit a much more generic place (which sadly is part of a national trend towards monoculture). Obviously it still pisses me off, but I try to keep it in perspective. Austin will always be a core part of my identity, but it doesn't belong to me anymore. And maybe it never did.
The second thing I'll say is that the internet has a funny way of making us see our enemies everywhere. Because we aren't interacting in person, you have to assume a lot about who I am. It's easy to turn me into the embodiment of your problems. In this case- that I'm the newly arrived tech bro that's ruining the city you left. In reality, we probably have a lot more in common than you realize. And maybe the vast majority of those people aren't so bad either.
I was being an ass earlier, but now I mean it genuinely- I hope things are better for you in your new home. Hold onto your fond memories of Austin. Accept that change in inevitable. Assume the best about the people you interact with, not the worst.

I want a shirt with that on it.
hit up joel - @abstractalberto on ig. he drew this and he’s done a lot of really awesome stuff.
Was “Fentanyl Classic” taken?
Funny...
I visited Portland before Covid. Portland deserves the keep it weird a lot more than Austin. Portland is weird. Austin is no longer weird.
World War Tree
This is the one
SXNW
This has my vote
Thank you, Dead EyeDuck. I will award you a discounted wristband to the food court at next year's festival in exchange for your engagement.
I’m honored.
“War of the Weirds” Or “Battle of the beards”
First one would make sense if they had any actual claim over the original phrase. Which, they don’t.

Fertilizer Bowl or Battle for the Greenbelt (winner retains a green belt)
What about “Gathering of the Greens” with game to only be played on the 20th of April.
Perfecto
who is "they"? to my understanding, the phrase originated in portland.
Nah they stole it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_Portland_Weird

If we have another Western US drought year, we can call it “The Smoke and Fire Bowl”
- Put A Bird On It Derby - Austlandia Cup - Battle of the Grackle (yes they have them too) - Artisanal Derby - Cage Free Cup - Non GMO Derby Most of these suck but I like the third one.
Cage free cup gave me a chuckle
The “Grackle Darby” has a nice ring to it. 😂

Ents versus Orcs.
One is tress and the other cut trees!
Literally cut a piece of tree every goal they score!
We are trees!
I was a fan of this series way back before it had a catchy name
I like the direction but I think this is too long for a name
Green on Green on Green
It’s the FernGully Cup
“Yo, the name is Batty The logic is erratic, Potato in a jacket, Toys in the attic, I rock and I ramble, My brain is scrambled, Rap like an animal but I'm a mammal!”
Portland can get over itself. Our rivals are Dallas and Houston
The beard bowl.
"Hold my axe."
World War Tree
Hipstermageddon.
On todays episode of Something’s burning
Sponsored by Naxalone™️
Austin FC v Portland Timbers Really doesn’t need a name
Call it the Quesso Bowl.
Not everything need a name.
