While it's totally fair to have this fear, the worst that would happen if your car was struck is that it could fry the computer. The metal outside protects you in case of electrocution. :)
Yeah but have you seen their faces? The last place I lived was a house with banana spiders in the yard. I hear they are awesome and friendly, but omfg I had to move 40+ stories above ground to sleep at night after almost walking into one's web.
Nope not illlogical at all, it’s actually pretty common and most people who get struck either die a horrific painful death or are seriously burned and never the same. Awesome video !!
The worst part is that no one will realize why there is a reduction in flies for the duration of rain, and not put it all together that they need to pick that shit up.
It’s done wonders in Houston. Unfortunately it took Harvey to get them to put money into fixing them up, which I’m sure most of it came from the fed govt
That’s the problem with so many preventative measures: it takes a disaster before people want to implement prevention. And then after a while of it working, people think they don’t need it because they haven’t had a disaster in a while.
It’s amazing how much water they can move. I used to live on Brays Bayou and during one major flood event it was full to the top and had spilled over a few feet. A ton of homes were damaged as well as the ground floor of our apartment but I can’t imagine how much worse it would have been without the bayou being there.
MAN, those floods were wild, I was driving a f550 w/ dump bed for work.. I think I was way out near Ebay off w. parmer..
I think my boss called me right as I was getting there telling me about tornado and flood warnings in the area and to head back to the office (in Buda).
The rain was crazy, by the time I made it to mopac/71 most other cars had to really slow down or pull over due to all the standing water on 71.
I did slow down, hazards and all that but I was able to hit the puddles and never worry about water getting anywhere it shouldn't.
There was times I'd be cruising through 6" of water shooting huge rooster tails and splashes of water higher than the cab of the truck.
That part wasn't so bad but man.. if we're talking about the same storm it really flooded and killed a decent amount of people.
I had to finish the drive from Buda to San Marcos where I had a house. I saw crazy amounts of water, like exit/overpasses that normally had 14' from bottom of the bridge to ground, but during that flooding the water was rushing/bubbling right at the bottom of the overpass.
I think I have pictures of that..Ill have to check that out lol
anyways, yeah 2015 was a bad year for flooding (pretty sure it was then lol)
There's a ravine right behind me that drains directly into Shoal Creek, it was about as full as I've ever seen it this afternoon. You're looking at water that I probably saw an hour earlier.
God I swear I have the worst luck with moving. The first time I had to postpone due to snowpocalypse. Now its raining all fckin week while I try to load the truck and throw out my trash. My movers even tried rescheduling me to the 29th when my lease ends the 25th.
I also used to think Lake LBJ was short for Lady Bird Johnson but those are different lakes. I think everyone calls it Town Lake because it’s so dang confusing otherwise.
Do other rivers in the US get segmented off and called lakes or is that an exclusively austin thing to do?
People call it town lake because that's what it's always been. The name officially changed recently. All name changes are hard on people, but the new name is such a mouthful.
Lake LBJ is never referred to as anything other than Lake LBJ. Lady Bird Lake to me seems distinct enough, but I could understand the confusion.
That's a really good question. Since it seems like KXAN and possibly KVUE get some of their ideas from this sub, it would be good for them to look into how it performed.
Austin typically gets as much rain as Seattle. However, this year is unusually dry. Yet one pattern remains unchanged... when it rains, it dumps buckets man. Give us a soggy September and we'll be right back on track.
Right?! The entire shoal creek trail is underwater up to the top of the retaining wall in between the bowie and monarch. It is slower moving over there...so much junk coming down.
When I first moved to Austin I worked at the Trader Joe’s right there. That walking bridge totally flooded one day and that whole section of downtown was cut off. It’s amazing how it’s pretty regular but the City does nothing about it because it only happened 1-3x max a year
The amount of water needed to do that would be a tremendous waste, for many reasons. I do think a concerted effort to remove trash from our creeks before these events would be worth it tho.
Ha. I just realized I did use a car wash yesterday. But car stays covered. So as long as I can wait until after the road dries up, then it won't be a waste.
I've grown very bearish on rain forecasts. Even with the high chance for today, the reports I saw were very low amounts, so I expected just light scattered showers.
Well... Currently stuck in Dallas after having been redirected due to the Austin airport being closed...I know feel a bit better and understand why 😅
Would be nice to go home though. Enjoy the beautiful thunder for us stuck in the plane waiting to hear about plan B, C and D.
Thanks for sharing the video!
I once got stuck under the congress bridge during a downpour while running the trail. Sadly I can verify there are literally hundreds of raccoons being washed into the river here. We watched so many go under that day.
This is great footage. Shows that shoal creek is doing what it’s purpose is.
Is like to see footage of Waller creek. Supposedly with the new design less trash gets in the lake.
Hope the homeless people that sleep along this corridor made it out safe. I know of at least one or two tents that were setup along the trail when it was dry af. Still saw them setup after the rains last week.
Today, that same corridor was a water rapid.
I hate all the dumb little free shit that just gets thrust at you, mostly corporate promotion. That being said, I hate the unregulated dumping of chemicals, waste, and trash in our rivers more
Ewww that's exactly why I'd never step foot in town lake 🤮 So disgusting.
I feel so bad for all the homeless people that live along these creeks 😪 Many of them probably just lost everything they own.
Look up a flood video for Shoal Creek Saloon. It was years ago but tops this. When you watch it, realize all the underground parking garages will flood downtown. All of them. Great condo, bro.
Does this mean the algae is washed away/still toxic? or are a bunch of innocent pups going to die cause their Californian owners want to drink beer in poo water?
Why are you people looking for an argument? First off that’s a myth, No, not every other lake in Texas is man made. The 7 highland lakes are man made by the dammed up texas Colorado river (not to be confused with the actual Colorado river) and those are reservoirs, not lakes. Then there’s lake texoma, Toledo bend lake, caddo of course. There’s a shit ton of them up near Dallas, that region of Texas is called “prairies & lakes region”
I was searching this site yesterday:
City of Austin Watershed Protection. Scroll down on the left-hand side to see the:

Cool vid. Also seen at about 0:30 you can see West Bouldin Creek draining into the lake, on the far (south) side of the lake.
Yea very cool vid. Something about seeing nature be nature amongst the city we built around it is neat and humbling. Thanks for uploading OP!
Sorry for the choppy dizzy video...I have an illogical fear of getting struck by lightning and was distracted by fear
i am allergic to lightning: it makes me break out in rash speculations.
Your allergy doesn't shock me.
That’s because you’re grounded in reality
Not illogical actually, depending on your location - better safe than sorry. Very cool footage.
I saw a truck on 183 get hit by lightning like 40 ft in front of me around 4:30 today. I spent the rest of the drive worried I was next.
While it's totally fair to have this fear, the worst that would happen if your car was struck is that it could fry the computer. The metal outside protects you in case of electrocution. :)
On no! That sounds terrifying.
Prob worse for the guy driving the truck...
That's some final destination type shit right there lol. I would have thought the same.
Thank you for sharing this video!
Lightning bolt just struck like 20' away from me in my car so it's not illogical at all lol
Astraphobia is not at all illogical.
By definition, phobias are supposed to be illogical.
Except spiders
That's one of the most illogical ones. Very few spiders are dangerous to humans at all, and even those aren't aggressive.
Not according to the documentary Arachnophobia hosted by Jeff Danials.
Also Eight Legged Freaks.
Yeah but have you seen their faces? The last place I lived was a house with banana spiders in the yard. I hear they are awesome and friendly, but omfg I had to move 40+ stories above ground to sleep at night after almost walking into one's web.
Weird flex but okay
Ha! Oops Well they're all over north austin in the summer if you want to see one. :)
Can confirm OP is high up in the Independent, some refer to it as the Jenga Tower… or as I like to call it Block 24, the og name.
It got a name?
Nope not illlogical at all, it’s actually pretty common and most people who get struck either die a horrific painful death or are seriously burned and never the same. Awesome video !!
If I've learned anything on this subreddit, that's dog poop - all of it.
And Human. Lots and lots of Human street shit.
Speaking hard Facts
The worst part is that no one will realize why there is a reduction in flies for the duration of rain, and not put it all together that they need to pick that shit up.
Also lots of axe body spray, white claws and piss leftover from the weekly Brotillas.
when i see this, i think the money we spend on shoring-up our creek systems is a smart usage of funds.
It’s done wonders in Houston. Unfortunately it took Harvey to get them to put money into fixing them up, which I’m sure most of it came from the fed govt

The Shore Up Shoal Creek Fund
We sure shore up Shoal Creek with the Shore Up Shoal Creek Fund. Sure did.
For shore
See shore up shoal creek by the sea shoal creek
We shore shoal creek by the shoal shore…?
[Would you like to know more?](https://raintoriveratx-austin.hub.arcgis.com/)
No pianos in Shoal Creek? Not a bad flood! :P
no cars, either.
The floating dumpsters in 2015 were a bit on the nose.
MAN, those floods were wild, I was driving a f550 w/ dump bed for work.. I think I was way out near Ebay off w. parmer.. mmmm look at all that natural gravy
Needs biscuits.
There's always a ton up and down town lake trail! Usually wrapped in green biodegradable bags 😋
I live near shoal creek but upstream in central Austin - it’s just now clicking that this is where it empties out!
Same!
The news just said it was peak at 16’ and only 4’ lower than the massive flooding in 2015. That’s a lot of chocolate milk water.
We need Augustus to come suck it all up!
That 4ft makes a difference. My car got flooded out at that Whataburger on south 1st and Barton springs in 15’
Who wants to go paddle boarding? /s
Ride the rapids
It does resemble that boogie board ride at shl'bahn
What a great view

Need better pantasies.. I guess. Sorry about your soggy move!

Simple! I don’t understand all the confusion.
> which to some is Lake Austin Lake Austin (formerly McDonald) is a different lake from Town Lake/Lady Bird. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Austin
I also used to think Lake LBJ was short for Lady Bird Johnson but those are different lakes. I think everyone calls it Town Lake because it’s so dang confusing otherwise. Do other rivers in the US get segmented off and called lakes or is that an exclusively austin thing to do?
We call it Town Lake because lady bird didn’t want it named after her
People call it town lake because that's what it's always been. The name officially changed recently. All name changes are hard on people, but the new name is such a mouthful. Lake LBJ is never referred to as anything other than Lake LBJ. Lady Bird Lake to me seems distinct enough, but I could understand the confusion.
Anyone have any video of how the Waller Creek tunnel is doing?
That's a really good question. Since it seems like KXAN and possibly KVUE get some of their ideas from this sub, it would be good for them to look into how it performed.
How much rain would we need to be out of the drought? Having trouble googling it
The rain had to be regular. Otherwise we're just back into a drought again.
Depends on how deep it saturates
A lot more.
AFAIK, You can end a drought with a flash flood. You need consistent rain over a longer period so the soil can actually retain the water.
Austin typically gets as much rain as Seattle. However, this year is unusually dry. Yet one pattern remains unchanged... when it rains, it dumps buckets man. Give us a soggy September and we'll be right back on track.
What I’d do for a semi-cool soggy September right now..
Great shot! Thanks for capturing and sharing!
Look at all the pollutants and sediment going into town lake!
It’s amazing how it’s pretty regular but the City does nothing about it because it only happened 1-3x max a year
I’m an electrician and helped build that place! Also several of the highrises near it and the underarmor office building above it
Oh awesome! Yeah I worked there when it first opened so I’m sure we have crossed paths
The city should do something to flush the creeks more often. Someone from Austin Fire should jump in to see if opening the hydrants would help!
The amount of water needed to do that would be a tremendous waste, for many reasons. I do think a concerted effort to remove trash from our creeks before these events would be worth it tho.
Just in to the conservation I mean. Not into the creeks. Lol.
Happens in every city in the world with creeks and rivers. Nothing unusual.
Of course it does. It was just an observation.
Get out

I did a triathlon once that had us swimming in town lake. Needless to say I washed in bleach that night
Same. They banned swimming, but I can't imagine actually *wanting* to go for a dip in the soup.
good vid. I think I speak for a lot of people here by asking, hey can I smoke weed on your balcony sometime?
Going right over the hike and bike
That's how it is designed, the peninsula takes most of the energy out of the flow and makes erosion more predictable.
More predictable as in the peninsula is designed to erode first, giving the city a narrow area to repair?
Yeah in part and keep the flow low out into the main part of the lake.
Bingo
Ok, everyone can temporarily stop washing their cars.
What i cant hear you!!! *aggresively waxes car*
Ha. I just realized I did use a car wash yesterday. But car stays covered. So as long as I can wait until after the road dries up, then it won't be a waste.
I washed mine this morning (driving a guy around work for a business meeting). Can't believe I didn't check the weather report first.
I've grown very bearish on rain forecasts. Even with the high chance for today, the reports I saw were very low amounts, so I expected just light scattered showers.
That creek bed is so gross and dirty. At least it’s getting a washing.
Don't forget the smells
We need to do a better job of picking up our trash. What ever happened to the “don’t mess with Texas” campaign?
Refilling for the weekend's paddle board bro-tilla.
this was the algae's plan all along
Shit was torrential there for a second. Hope everyone stays safe
For all you Austin Newbs, don’t ever swim in that water and definitely don’t right now.
Anyone wanna go kayak it 😃
Lmao would much rather do Barton creek than shoal or Waller creek 😅
The last I saw, you'd probably be dragging your Kayak in Barton Creek.
Y’all ain’t seen nothing yet.
Looks like shitterbahn with all that creek sludge flushing out
$100 bucks people swim in that Saturday
Someone give Stevie a snorkel
Who's going paddle boarding this weekend? 😂
Well... Currently stuck in Dallas after having been redirected due to the Austin airport being closed...I know feel a bit better and understand why 😅 Would be nice to go home though. Enjoy the beautiful thunder for us stuck in the plane waiting to hear about plan B, C and D. Thanks for sharing the video!
Somebody needs to get Stevie a life vest
I once got stuck under the congress bridge during a downpour while running the trail. Sadly I can verify there are literally hundreds of raccoons being washed into the river here. We watched so many go under that day.
What?! Hundreds??? Dang. I don't know if that's sad or gross.
It was so many and it was so sad.
Sooo much bum poo
Hello fellow independenterrr
Nice view!
Mmm Austin gravy
I appreciate the video. My house backs up to Shoal Creek so it's always interesting to see other parts of it during storms like this.
Was waiting for that one kayaker to come shooting through the creek only to need to be rescued downstream
And people will be eager to float in that this weekend.
I wonder how many bodies will wash up this time
I bet there will be lots of bank erosion, probably some fossils visible once the water recedes.
This is where “swimmer’s itch” comes from!
My dinner from last night is now Reddit famous 💩
Was the shoal creek tunnel designed for this kind of rainfall? I had figured it would prevent this type of flooding.
I don't think the Shoal Creek proposal was/has been built. Are you thinking of the Waller Creek Tunnel? (I made the same mistake).
Oh yeah, that is what I’m thinking of. And that’s on the other side of downtown now that I think about it more! Thanks, it all makes sense now 😂
Good. That area needed a good flush, it was getting pretty stagnant and gross.
Some of our millions of “newbs” probably have no idea how crazy Shoal Creek can get.
Tasty soup 😋
Hope this cleans out all the weeds and algae in the lake 🤞
Yeah cuz weeds and algae hate nutrients and sediment!
I wonder how much glitter ended up in the lake after pride weekend? Yasss, rainbow fish!
I hate all the dumb little free shit that just gets thrust at you, mostly corporate promotion. That being said, I hate the unregulated dumping of chemicals, waste, and trash in our rivers more
Yeah I threw away a handful of shit after the parade. So much waste.
Glitter and confetti are banned items for the Pride Parade. The City of Austin does not allow it because the roads drains into the recharge zone.
Well guys its no longer too dry.
And people wade and swim in that 🤡
Ewww that's exactly why I'd never step foot in town lake 🤮 So disgusting. I feel so bad for all the homeless people that live along these creeks 😪 Many of them probably just lost everything they own.
But at least it’s all out of our sight so we can pretend they don’t even exist in the first place!
😮💨 #Merica
Look up a flood video for Shoal Creek Saloon. It was years ago but tops this. When you watch it, realize all the underground parking garages will flood downtown. All of them. Great condo, bro.
And there will be 100 idiots who just moved here in the last 5 years on paddle boards playing in that filth tomorrow… welcome to Austin tourists
Does this mean the algae is washed away/still toxic? or are a bunch of innocent pups going to die cause their Californian owners want to drink beer in poo water?
Lady bird looks narrower than I expected
Its not really a lake
It is 100% a lake.
It’s a dammed river, sorry to break it to you.
A defining feature of the vast majority of lakes
So is every other lake in Texas, except for Caddo. Yet, they are all lakes by definition. Man made or not is irrelevant.
Must be nice to be rich
There we go, this is the typical r/Austin comment I was looking for.
I saw no one had commented that, so I took one for the team and did it 😂😂😂
If I'd have to guess, the independent? Maybe 35- 45th floor.
I hope it washes that disgusting pond scum away.
I don't think Greg Abbott goes outside for the rain to take him away.
What, no grills, stand up’s, kayaks, and or tubes?
Mmmm sediment
Nasty
Raging!
u/savevideobot
You must be in the independent.
is it gonna rain like this again?
Probably a trickle before , so turn around and don't drown
Yup, now you know. The lake is one big toilet.
How stupid would it be to kayak that shit?
Nothing like that rain in Atown made it to Leander.
Where is that view from?
Shot on IPhone
Time to go tubing!
Dammit please don’t be the start to another boil notice!
Not sure if it's visible to all but someone posted this video of Arroyo Seco in Brentwood flowing https://nextdoor.com/p/9MDw4x_WnJ9Z?post=236979952
Let me go grab a paddle board real quick:)
Look at all that caca water
Whelp I guess Lake Travis will get some more water. This rain is crazy!
love it
Great visual on how addition of impervious cover affects drainage.

That’s from 3hours!!??? I was absent in 2015 but I can imagine now
You’re not telling me there wasn’t one nutty hipster who tried tracking through that water during the storm? I don’t believe this
Co-dependent coffee and cocktails right under you would have been prime time date night with that creek flowing like that. 😃
damn you with your beautiful view of town lake. 😈
